New BMW diesels feature incorrect fueling protection system

Auto Blog: Diesel , BMW Click the 335d for a high res gallery One of the risks of owning and operating a diesel vehicle is mis-fueling. Just as putting diesel fuel in the tank of a gas-powered vehicle will cause some very expensive damage, so to will gas in a diesel tank. The former is largely prevented by the use of two different sized nozzles. Diesel nozzles on pumps are larger in diameter than gas nozzles so they don’t physically fit. However, it’s not uncommon for drivers to mistakenly insert a smaller gas nozzle into the diesel fill neck on the vehicle. BMW has devised a mechanism that locks the flap in the filler neck to prevent fuel flow if the smaller nozzle is inserted. Only the larger diesel nozzle will unlock the flap allowing fuel to flow. The new system is now standard on all diesel-equipped BMWs, both in Europe and North America, including the new 335d and X5 xDrive35d. Hopefully, BMW will share this technology with other automakers. Volkswagen adds 7-speed DSG to European CC

Auto Blog: MPG , Volkswagen Over in the UK, drivers buying a new Passat CC now have a new transmission option that gives them an extra 1.2 mpg. The 160 hp 1.8L TSI four cylinder can now be paired with VW’s 7-speed DSG dual clutch gearbox in place of the 6-speed manual. The DSG yields a combined 32.2 mpg (U.S.) compared to the 31.0 mpg (U.S.) with the manual. Similarly, the CO 2 emissions have dropped from 178 g/km to 172 g/km. The 2.0L TDI diesel and gasoline 3.6L V6 are available with the 6-speed DSG, in addition to the manual and conventional automatic transmissions. Here in the U.S., no DSG transmissions are available in the CC, and neither are the diesel or 1.8L engines. The 2.0L TSI is available with a 6-speed manual or automatic while the V6 can only be ordered with the automatic. New MetroKing taxi could be equipped with hybrid power

Auto Blog: Hybrid , Chevrolet , Legislation and Policy , USA Click on the image above for a gallery of MetroKing’s new taxi The City of New York would like to improve the fuel mileage of its fleet of taxis , but the issue is proving more difficult than planned to implement. After the city announced plans to place fuel economy requirements on all taxis operating within its jurisdiction, a minor riot erupted among the drivers and at least one union sued to stop the law from taking place. Later, federal judge Paul Crotty ruled that the city must put the plan on hold . A new company called MetroKing has popped up with a potential resolution to the problem. Using a Chevy Colorado Chassis Cab as its foundation, the new wheelchair-accessible taxicab features a removable passenger compartment where the pickup bed would otherwise sit. MetroKing has been testing mild hybrid systems in the vehicle that would keep the engine from idling when the taxi isn’t moving. Early testing shows the potential for a 20 percent improvement in fuel mileage, which could possibly already be improved over the current fleet that’s made up mostly of V8-powered Ford Crown Victorias. More details on the RORMaxx Formula AE wind-assisted car

Auto Blog: Emerging Technologies , AutoblogGreen Exclusive Click above for a high-res gallery of the RORMaxx The RORMaxx Formula AE student project got some attention when we first posted on it a few weeks ago. AutoblogGreen reader Jesse K. wanted to get some information directly from the horse’s mouth and contacted Rory Handel (one of the students involved) about the technical features of this wind-assisted car. Basically, the students don’t think they’ve rewritten the rules of physics here, as you can see in the email thCar Blog Greenof Jesse and Rory’s conversation pasted after the jump. Rory gives us a little more detail on the “Air Flow Recovery” system. It’s not perpetual motion, just trying to snag some extra energy as the car moves down the street. In the computer models and in the lab, at least, the system works. Full details after the jump. If you missed the first post on the RORMaxx, click here . Citroen planning new eco-brand, start-stop across the board

Auto Blog: MPG , Citroen Citroen is planning to follow other European automakers in launching a new eco-brand similar to BlueMotion and ecoNetic. In addition to the new branding, the French automaker will roll out fuel-saving features like automatic start stop across its entire model range over the next few years, including on the larger C5 and C6 models. The company will also increase availability of its EGS semi-automatic transmission as well as add manual transmissions to its larger engines. Proof that DIY electric motorcycles can be built for under 3K

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , On Two Wheels Click above to enlarge Lennon Rodgers’ electric motorcycle Big motorcycle manufacturers are just now beginning to jump on the electric bandwagon , but that doesn’t mean you have to wait a few years if you want to enjoy gasoline-free two-wheeled motoring right now. There are a number of used bikes on the market that are ripe for an electric conversion, and it may not be as expensive as you think to add an electric motor, controller and batteries to an existing machine. Here are two examples. First up are Donald and Andrew Higginbotham, a father and son team that managed to create their own electric motorcycle from a used Suzuki RF900 plus three months of weekend work. After the bike’s engine, transmission and radiator were removed, 72 volts worth of batteries were fitted, which provide power to an electric motor and controller that were purchased from Electric Motorsport . Either an ETEK or a Perm 132 combo should work fine. Next up is Lennon Rodgers, who says that he was tired of breathing in harmful exhaust fumes while riding his bicycle and decided to do something about it himself. Starting with a Lifan motorcycle chassis from China, Rodgers added a 300 amp permanent magnet motor along with 72 volts worth of lead acid batteries and matching 300 amp controller with regenerative braking capability. A few other bits and pieces, plus plenty of time and effort rounded out the package for under $3,000 using parts sourced solely from the internet. Best of all, Rodgers created a handy DIY guide for those looking to replicate the project. Brazilian company Maxi-Eco to enter Auto X Prize

Auto Blog: Emerging Technologies , Ethanol , Flex-Fuel , Automotive X-Prize , South/Latin America When the Automotive X-Prize announced its competition, and especially the $10 million in prize money that goes along with it, we figured that plenty of small, relatively unknown companies would enter the proceedings. They have . The good news is that this is exactly the point of the event – to stimulate innovation in a rational, usable manner. Of course, some are more oddball than others, but we digress. One new competitor called Maxi-Eco appears to be coming by way of Brazil with a new flex-fuel axial engine design that it believes will handily outperform the 100 mile per gallon equivalent rating that the competition calls for. The firm had considered going the hybrid route, but has since decided that its patent pending engine technology will be fine without it. At this point, the engine resides in a Lotus 7 knockoff, but the team will enter the X-Prize competition with an undetermined production car chassis fitted with its unique powerplant. Thanks for the tip, Gustavo ! [Source: MotorTips ] Brazilian company Maxi-Eco to enter Auto X Prize originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Fri, 30 Jan 2009 20:01:00 EST. Sustainable biodiesel summit takes place this weekend in San Francisco

Auto Blog: Biodiesel Coming to you live, for one weekend only, it’s the fabulous Sustainable Biodiesel Summit, which is about what you probably think it’s about. This year’s Sustainable Biodiesel Summit will blend the sustainability message with a local one. The official theme is, “Localize It! Celebrating Community Scale Biodiesel.” Activists Annie Nelson and Darryl Hannah will be on hand to talk to producers and leaders in the biodiesel industry. Two years ago, the SBS was held in Texas ; last year in Florida . As in previous years, the SBS is followed by the National Biodiesel Conference and Expo, put on by the National Biodiesel Board. One of these years, it’d be nice to be a part of these events, but we’ll just need to rely on reports coming from SF over the weekend. Anyone attending?
