Welcome to Geneva! Meet the 2010 Chevrolet Spark! 47 mpg (U.S.)!

Click image above for a high-res gallery of the 2010 Chevy Spark The Autoblog/AutoblogGreen team is just rolling into Geneva this morning for one of the biggest auto shows of the year, and look what we found before we even got out of the airport: Sitting in the Chevrolet media lounge right by the train station is the brand-new Chevrolet Spark. Essentially a four door version of the Beat concept we saw two years ago in New York, the Spark will be launching in other parts of the world in early 2010 and in the U.S. a year later. Both the 1.0-liter and 1.2-liter engines are expected to top 47 miles-per-gallon (U.S.) combined and emit less than 120 g/km of CO 2 . They wouldn’t let us sit in the car yet but it looks surprisingly roomy at this first look. Hopefully, General Motors will be around long enough that we’ll get to drive it. Opel releases official photo of new Ampera ER-EV

Click to enlarge Last week, Opel staffers foolishly left the new Ampera parked outside its Russelsheim, Germany headquarters in plain view of a photographer. There were of course no real surprises in the resulting shots, sincee the Ampera is essentially a Chevy Volt with new front and rear fascias. Opel has now released the first official image of the Ampera ahead of its reveal at the Geneva Motor Show this week. It’s clearly visible that the Ampera gets a face inspired by the GTC concept of a couple years back along with a different wheel design from its American sibling. GM sources tell us that the Ampera will have a somewhat more upscale interior as well. Under the skin, though, the hardware remains the same with a 40-mile plug-in range, 300-mile total range and a 1.4L range extender. Miller industries debuts hybrid recovery truck at Daytona 500

The racers competing on the track in NASCAR events may still be the cars of yesteryear when it comes to technology, but there was one bit of green on the track for the season opener at Daytona last week. Miller Industries provided a flat-bed race recovery truck with a hybrid drivertrain. The International DuraStar 4300 chassis was equipped with Eaton’s heavy duty diesel electric drive system. This is the same system that’s been installed on a variety of trucks and buses around the country in the last couple of years. The engine has an automated clutch that feeds into the electric motor/generator and then into the automated transmission. This was the first application of the Eaton hybrid system on a towing and recovery vehicle. The short distance, low speed duty cycle of this application makes it well suited to the hybrid system. Miller will be adding the hybrid truck to its fleet of vehicles that support NASCAR races around the United States. German agency names BMW/MINI most fuel efficient premium brands

Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2009 MINI Cooper S Convertible The Federal Motor Transport Authority in Germany has declared BMW and MINI as the most fuel efficient premium brands available in that market. The agency has calculated fleet average fuel economy for all new cars registered in Germany during 2008 and BMW/MINI came out on top with an average of 39.9 mpg (U.S.) and CO 2 emissions of 158 g/km Those numbers are lower than the average for all German made vehicles, a number that stood at 165 g/km. Of course, that isn’t necessarily a direct comparison since the MINIs are made in the UK and help pull up thecompany average while the German aggregate number also includes cars from Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and the VW Group. The German fleet average for BMW is considerably higher than its U.S. CAFE average for 2008 of 27.4 mpg, in part because more than half of the BMWs in Europe are diesel powered and BMW only started selling diesels here a few months ago. BMW also doesn’t sell any of its four cylinder gasoline engines here or offer technologies like automatic start/stop yet. In the next few years the company will likely begin offering those technologies as well as new hybrids that will help its U.S. numbers. Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc. California ARB approves $700,000 in grants for green tech demos

The California Air Resources Board this week approved $700,000 in grants for demonstration projects to evaluate clean air technology. Advanced Transit Dynamics, Eaton and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District will each receive over $200,000 for projects. Eaton will build a package delivery van using a hydraulic series hybrid system it has developed. Similar systems have also been developed and tested by several other companies. UPS has been running several series hybrid vans for more than two years. Advanced Transit Dynamics will show an active aerodynamic system installed on a class 8 tractor trailer designed to minimize drag. The Sacramento project will use digester gases to consume some of the emissions from a stationary engine fueled by biogas. Companies getting the grants must provide matching funds for at least half the cost of the project with at least 10 percent coming from the grant recipient. Toyota’s most unusual eco-car concepts come from its "Revolution" Manager

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Hi-CT There’s a reason that outlandish but environmentally-friendly Toyota concept cars like the Hi-CT plug-in hybrid truck (above), the RIN and the 1/X exist: Tetsuya Kaida. HybridCars has a profile of Kaida in a new post where we find out that, it Kaida gets his way, these crazy auto show-only vehicles will one day be upstaged by the seaweed car. Kaida, the manager of Toyota’s “Business Revolution Corporate Value Project” gets to play with “car design, global lifestyle trends, Japanese ancient art and culture, fantasy and nature,” in HybridCars’ words. Aside from the seaweed car (which Kaida likes becuase Japan is surrounded by the ocean), Kaida talked about a plant-based version of the 1/X during the recent Melbourne International Motor Show. If his dream comes true, it might take the 1/X about 15 years to get to dealerships, he said. The fundmantal idea behind all of these concepts, Kaida said, is harmony, and described his designs as “the Way of the Car, much like a tea ceremony or flower arrangement.” This is not a guy who dreams small. Geneva Preview: 37 mpg (U.S.) Lexus RX 450h CUV

Click above for a high res gallery of the RX 450h When we first met the RX 450h hybrid CUV – excuse me, the “car-based luxury utility vehicle,” during the LA Auto Show last November, Lexus wouldn’t say what mileage the vehicle would get. Now that we’re a bit closer to the release date and the CUV’s European debut at the Geneva Motor Show this week, Lexus has announced that the RX 450h gets 44.8 mpg (37 mpg U.S.) on the combined cycle, an improvement of 28 percent. Combine that with CO 2 emissions of 148 grams per km, and Lexus has a numbers to brag about. The RX 450h goes on sale in the UK this summer. We’ll get more details on the European debut from Geneva this coming week.
