UPS deploys 300 CNG trucks in four states, now has 800 worldwide

UPS has announced the deployment of 300 new CNG-powered trucks in North America. The trucks have been deployed over the past month to Denver (43 units); Atlanta (46); Oklahoma City (100), and four cities in California: Sacramento (21), San Ramon (63), Los Angeles (9) and Ontario (18). This gives UPS a total of 800 vehicles across the company’s worldwide fleet that burn natural gas out of a total of 1,819 UPS vehicles that use alternative fuels. The alt-energy sources include CNG, liquefied natural gas, propane, electric and hybrid electric vehicles in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany (pictured), France, Brazil, Chile, Korea and the United Kingdom. These 300 vans were not converted vehicles but designed to be CNG-capable from the start. Geneva 2009: Top ten diesels you can’t get in America!

One of the first things you notice when you start wandering around the Geneva Motor Show is that virtually every major automaker offers diesel engines. Lots of them. Many of them are even in cars that we can get in the U.S. market but only with gasoline engines. As our regular readers know, I’m a fan of modern diesel engines. Being in Geneva gives me a chance to present, in no particular order, 10 examples of cars available in the U.S. (or available soon) that could really benefit from having a diesel option. All the mileage figures have been converted to U.S. mpg. No need to use glowplugs, let’s just get started . Geneva 2009: Euro-spec Tata Nano (it’s bigger!) and all-electric Indica

Click on image to see the three upcoming Tata Euro-spec models As we reported, Tata has an Euro-spec Nano on the works . The changes from the Indian version include adding an all-aluminium I3 MPFI engine with a 5-speed automatic transmission and electric power steering. The engine should address all the concerns about Tata’s green credentials, as it will be Euro V compliant and have emissions under the 100 g/km of CO 2 mark. The Nano Europa will also include significant security equipment like ABS, ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and airbags. There’s also a change in size, as the Nano Europa has a slightly longer wheelbase of 2.28 meters. Tata’s all-electric Indica, which was also shown during the SIAM Expo , uses polymer lithium batteries that are expected to offer a range of 200 km (120 mi) and a 0-to-60 km/h (0 to 40 mph) time of less than 10 seconds. The model was adapted by Miljo Grenland/Innovasjon of Norway, where Tata UK’s owns 70 percent of the shares. Tata will also include a third model, called Prima, in its future European lineup. Auto X Prize deadline has passed; thoughts on the purse split

The Automotive X Prize’s deadline for registration has passed and now we get to wait and see just who’s going to be actually participating in the upcoming high-mileage competition. The organizers say that the last few days and hours before the deadline were “an absolute firestorm of phone calls, emails, and overnight packages.” From the looks of it, there might be 100 teams actually registered (40 already committed and then more than 50 applications that arrived in the last week), but somewhere between 60 and 70 is much more likely. We’ll have to wait for the staff to go through the papers and see if everything was submitted correctly before we get a complete list of all the teams released. One other bit of information that the X Prize organizers have shared on their blog is the reasoning for changing the $10 million prize purse from a 3-to-1 split between mainstream and alternative classes to a $5 million mainstream prize and two alternative class winners – one for a vehicle with side-by-side seating and one for a vehicle with tandem seating – who will each split the other $5 million. Details available here . Ever seen a few hundred Apteras at once? Here’s your chance

Click above to enlarge One fun thing we discovered in the Aptera Twitter feed today was this photoshopped image of more Aptera 2es than even exist right now (give them a follow; good stuff. And feel free to add AutoblogGreen’s tweets as well). Aptera says it “shows half of all of our pre-orders in one shot.” If you’ve ever wished these things could actually fly, this traffic jam would be a fine time to have that option. Anyway, today’s real news from Aptera can be found in our post from earlier today , we just wanted to share this pic. As for the provenance of the shot, we’re unsure. It’s hosted here , but I can’t find out whose site that is (it can’t be the same John Knoll who worked on the star wars movies, can it?). If you know the details, please let us know. Mahindra trucks – coming to a Saturn dealer near you?

According to John Perez, CEO of Global Vehicles U.S.A. Inc., his company was approached by a senior official at General Motors to see about selling the Indian vehicles in Saturn’s 403 dealerships. Global Vehicles holds the contract to distribute Mahindra ‘s line of diesel-powered pickup trucks here in America. Apparently, the offer was rebuffed, though the possibility remains that Mahindra pickups could be sold at selected Saturn dealerships. Instead of handing over the rights to sell the vehicles complete with Saturn badges, Global Vehicles has reportedly contacted roughly 40 Saturn dealerships about changing over to Mahindra shops. Last month, General Motors announced that it would stop providing Saturn with new products after the 2011 model year. Perez says that 327 dealerships have already signed on to distribute Mahindra’s wares here in the United States. Following the launch of the pickups later this year, the Indian automaker’s line of SUVs and crossovers may be on their way as well. Canada wants North American fuel efficiency standard

Canada’s Environment Minister Jim Prentice believes that there should be a single fuel efficiency standard for all countries in North America. He says, “At this point in the United States, it would appear as though they are headed toward a 35 mile a gallon standard by 2020 and that would start to come into effect in the 2011 model year. We’ve essentially been prepared to go in that same direction.” That 35 mpg standard is good enough for Canada if it’s good enough for the United States, right? It makes sense for automakers that sell their products across all of North America, especially to the U.S. domestic manufacturers that build hundreds of thousands of cars in Canada and Mexico each year. It’s not perfect, though, as California is moving to create its own fuel economy standards under the guise of greenhouse gas emissions regulations. “The first thing that has to happen, however, is that the United States has to land with their own domestic policy. It’s by no means clear how this will emerge from Congress over the course of the next year,” Prentice said. 100,000 Apteras in 5 years?

It appears that a sizable chunk of the 32.7 million electric vehicles predicted to be roaming the streets in that report we told you about will be built by Aptera . 100,000 of them to be exact. That is, if the company’s ambitious goals are reached. In their latest newsletter , the number was slipped in alongside mention of 1,500 jobs they plan on creating in that same time span. With a pool of customers over 4,000 deep, months before the first one hits the road, and a 4-wheeled sedan on the way as well, these targets may seem a little high-reaching but doable. This latest dispatch is more content rich than those in the past and contains links to some of the press attention they’ve gotten since their high-profile TED appearance . It also reveals an expanded web presence. Yes, the flightless ones are now Twittering away about everything Aptera and even fielding some questions. Look back over their past tweets and find links to pics of their appearance at the Desert Classic Concours d’Elegance or learn what one of these birds looks like in colors other than white. Enjoy. Geneva 2009: Lotus touts efficiency of new 2010 Exige S

Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2010 Lotus Exige S “The same technology that makes a lightweight car a high performer also makes it efficient – how many cars have performance figures of 0 – 100 km/h in 4.77 secs but produce only 199 g/km CO2?” That question was posed by Mike Kimberley, Chief Executive of Group Lotus plc, and he’s got a point. As part of its ongoing quest to shave weight, Lotus has blessed us with what are undoubtedly the most efficient fossil fuel-burning sportscars the world has ever seen. Of course, Lotus vehicles have also proven rather adept at accepting EV conversions for this same reason. For the 2010 model year, Lotus has upped the ante yet again by incrementally improving the aerodynamics of its Exige S, nudging up the fuel efficiency and lowering the carbon emissions in the process. A revised fascia lets more air in to cool the radiator and twin oil coolers and a new rear wing reduces drag and still puts down 42 kilograms (93 pounds) of downforce at 160 km/h (about 100 mph). Add it all up, and the new Exige S emits 199 g/km CO 2 and achieves European Combined Cycle ratings of 8.5 litres/100 km (33.2 mpg). Car Blog Greenthe full press release after the break. Geneva 2009: Ford’s next Focus, the iosis Max now with EcoBoost!

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Ford iosis Max Concept Ford is preparing to make a major shift to smaller cars over the next few years, starting with the new Fiesta at the end of this year and the new European-based Focus next year. When that next-generation Focus lands in the U.S., it is expected to look a lot like the concept that Ford is showing in Geneva this week. The shape and styling details of the iosis Max give a preview of next years Focus five door hatch although the head-light clusters and doors will surely be more conventional. The sliding rear doors are unlikely to make it to production either. What will make it through is the drivetrain. This is the third Ford concept this year (along with the Lincoln Concept C and Volvo S60 concepts in Detroit) powered by the new 1.6L EcoBoost four cylinder along with the PowerShift dual clutch transmission. With the automatic start stop system, this combination is expected to top 40 mpg with ease when it arrives.
