Detroit 2009: College for Creative Studies students reimagine the car
Auto Blog: Etc. , Green Culture , AutoblogGreen Exclusive , Detroit Auto Show , Green Daily Click on the image above for a high-res gallery of the concept models Vehicle models designed by students at the College For Creative Studies are on display at Cobo Hall as part of the Detroit Auto Show this year. Fanciful and outlandish, these models give an idea of what the automobile of the future could be like. That vehicle above, for example, is a redesigned Model T. Other examples of student creativity: A unique battery recharging station A Speed Racer-esqe Honda Something that looks like it should be pulled by a horse Most of these flights of fancy have a green message, which shouldn’t be a surprise. There’s a biodiesel race car , for example. Check out a video after the break and you can see more futuristic vehicle ideas in the Design Challenge Motorsports 2025 from the LA Auto Show. PROBIO inaugurates the first biodiesel rewards card
Auto Blog: Biodiesel , European Union Although we get more of those credit rewards cards than we really need, here’s one for a project that promotes biodiesel. A few territories in the European Union will soon have biodiesel fidelity cards (as they’re technically known) to help you fill your car with the biofuel. The five regions are the Spanish provinces of Ávila, Burgos and Huelva, Pomurje in Slovenia and Abruzzo in Italy. Each region will offer benefits to biodiesel users. For instance, some local councils will reduce Road Tax by 50 percent once the motorist shows uses the card enough times. The aim of the project, created under the 30-month long PROBIO project is to make biodiesel more common and better known in specific markets (the five regions are all rural ones; prime targets for PROBIO), to promote biofuel agriculture and raise awareness about the benefits of biodiesel. EVA Track T800: a 2WD, biodiesel-powered adventure motorcycle
Auto Blog: Biodiesel , On Two Wheels , European Union Adventure-style motorcycles are hot right now, and we can see why. The idea of traveling far and wide on a two-wheeler that’s capable of traversing whatever comes its way is an intriguing proposition, and one made even more so by such machines like the genre-defining BMW R 1200 GS. The recipe seems pretty simple: take one torque-rich and fuel efficient engine; attach it to a frame with relaxed geometry and add rugged suspenders, tires and lots of cargo carrying capacity. Presto! You’ve got an adventure tourer. Simple, right? Here’s a twist, though: replace the gas engine for one that runs on diesel. Brilliant! A Dutch company known as EVA has been working on a new diesel-powered adventure tourer for the last few years, and the machines are reportedly ready for sales in Europe. A 54-horsepower oil-burner that’s capable of running on biofuels is a great start, and the standard CVT transmission and optional two-wheel drive are icing on the cake. Fuel mileage of 100 miles per gallon at a steady 55 mph is the result, and a six gallon tank means that range will never be a problem. Click past the break for a short movie. Who wins federal dollars race? Ethanol does, by a long shot
Filed under: Ethanol , Legislation and Policy , USA Undeterred by the fact that ethanol is the worst type or alternative energy , the federal government is in love with corn ethanol, perhaps a bit too much. Over the years, the American farm lobby has worked and worked to get subsidies for corn growers and, more recently, ethanol producers. The result, as calculated the Environmental Working Group in a new report, is that ethanol (including made-from-corn biofuel) now receives more than three times as many federal dollars ($3 billion in 2007) than solar, wind, geothermal and other biomass combined
