The greening of the Oscars continues with the 2010 Toyota Prius

Over the last few years, it’s become more and more common for celebrities to hitch a ride in a hybrid or even a fully electric car in lieu of the more traditional chauffeured limo to major televised events. This year’s Academy Awards ceremony, scheduled to take place Sunday night, is no different. We’ve already heard rumors that a few A-listers would be making an appearance in their Tesla Roadsters , and now we learn that Toyota has teamed up with Econation to transport celebrities like Tom Hanks , Leonardo DiCaprio , Rosario Dawson and Adrien Grenier to the red carpet in the new 2010 Prius , which isn’t even in production yet . According to Ben Bloch , Managing Partner of Econation, “You might be surprised how many people prefer a Prius over a stretch or an SUV these days. Everyone from CEO’s of the biggest film studios to Academy Award nominees request the Prius when they’re going out on the town because it makes the best statement from an environmental perspective, and is stylish and comfortable as well.” Even if “making a statement” isn’t the best reason to choose a fuel-saver, these celebs were going to attend anyway and we’d rather they save a few gallons of gas in the process. Tata Motors still working on electric and air-powered Nano models

Click on the image above for a gallery of the Tata Nano Once again, Tata Motors has confirmed that it plans to launch diesel , electric and compressed air-powered versions of its diminutive Nano microcar. We think that’s great, but it’s hard to get too excited about the prospect until the standard twin cylinder gas-powered model is actually available. On the electric front, the Indian automaker has reportedly acquired an interest in a Norwegian electric car company called Miljo Grenland Innovasjon, which could help get a low-speed electric version of the Nano on roadways sooner. Further off into the distance would be versions of the microcar using compressed air technology developed by MDI. Spokespeople for Tata Motors promise that Nano will enter production sometime before April of this year, with diesel-powered models scheduled to arrive before 2010. If the inexpensive little car ever makes it to U.S. shores, it may happen first as a low-speed electric vehicle , which would mean it wouldn’t be subject to the same strict safety standards that more traditional cars must meet. Zero’s electric motorcycles quality for stimulus tax credits

As part of the sweeping changes being made through various pieces of legislation floating through the U.S. Senate and Congress, fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles will soon be eligible for tax credits, including those with two or three wheels. One benefactor to this legislation is Zero Motorcycles , a company that already has one electric off-road motorcycle on the market and has plans to introduce a new road-going version this spring. That new model, known as the Zero S Supermoto, will be eligible for a 10 percent tax credit under the new plan. Also included in the recently passed Stimulus Bill is funding of $2 billion for advanced battery technologies, and Zero is understandably pleased about this development as well. According to Neal Saiki, inventor and founder of Zero Motorcycles, “The fledgling electric motorcycle industry is rapidly responding to our country’s need for affordable and environmentally responsible transportation. We’re pretty excited to combine our passion for motorcycles with something that benefits everyone.” All of Zero’s electric motorcycles are equipped with advanced lithium ion battery packs. Toyota versus Ford – arguing about mileage of their midsize cars

Auto Blog: Hybrid , MPG , Ford , Toyota Click above for high-res gallery of the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid When Ford announced the fuel mileage statistics of its new 2010 Fusion Hybrid, the Blue Oval made a big deal about its fuel mileage ratings, which, at 41 mpg city and 36 highway , bests the Toyota Camry Hybrid. Toyota kindly retorted that its Camry is bigger than Ford’s Fusion. We wonder if that’s supposed to be a good thing. The Prius is also considered a midsize car based on its interior volume, so, depending on your point of view, both the Camry and the Prius could be considered logical competition for Ford’s latest hybrid sedan. For what it’s worth, the Prius, Camry and Fusion all have an interior volume of around 100 cubic feet, give or take a foot. Splitting hairs? Most definitely. We would hazard a guess that most people cross shop the Fusion Hybrid with the Camry Hybrid, being that they are normal-looking sedans from the outside, putting the Prius on a higher green pedestal anyway. We agree with Toyota’s official blog response that all this doesn’t really matter, just so long as each manufacturer is putting its best foot forward when engineering its new cars and trucks to get the best fuel mileage possible. In this case, this is exactly what appears to be happening. Further evidence of twin Prius models for 2010?

Auto Blog: Hybrid , Toyota Click above for high-res gallery of the 2010 Toyota Prius It’s been prognosticated that Toyota will keep its current-gen Prius around for the foreseeable future to share showroom space with the latest version of the iconic hybrid hatchback, which just recently debuted at the Detroit Auto Show . Toyota had in the past downplayed those rumors, but the Japanese Nikkei is once again reporting the two-Prius strategy, which leads us to believe that there may be some background fire to go with the smoke, at least in Toyota’s home market of Japan. We’re just going to have to wait and see what happens in U.S. showrooms when the new Prius finally makes its appearance later in the year. Why would Toyota want to keep its older model around anyway? The answer to that question may have something to do with the automaker’s cross-town rival, Honda. With a new competitor coming in the form of the new Insight , which is expected to be priced well below the Prius, Toyota could decide to keep the old model around a bit longer as a price leader. Darryl Siry prognosticates on the coming year in EVs

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in Ex-SVP of Tesla Darryl Siry is speaking out again, this time with his assessment of where he thinks the EV industry will be going in the next 12 months. 2009 will undoubtedly be an important year for manufacturers participating in the segment. With a new administration now ensconced in Washington, the atmosphere is likely to be far more biased towards environmentally-friendly rules and regulations. At the same time, the economic environment and political reality will also mean a bias toward preservation of existing jobs and creation of new ones. The first batch of loans from the $25 billion fund being administered by the Department of Energy will be awarded soon and Siry expects the bulk of the cash to go to established automakers to help preserve both jobs and their viability. Another trend that Siry expects to accelerate this year is equity investments by automakers into battery makers. Companies like Ford that don’t have such partnerships have already seen their existing hybrid capacity constrained by limited battery supplies. Check out the rest of Siry’s predictions at his own blog [Source: Darryl Siry ] Darryl Siry prognosticates on the coming year in EVs originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 23 Jan 2009 12:01:00 EST. Will it be your Destiny to live in a Florida eco-village?

Auto Blog: Etc. , EV/Plug-in , Green Culture , Hybrid , Green Daily , USA Photo by Felipe Venâncio . Licensed under Creative Commons license 2.0. While Newark moves to implement V2G technology and Austin makes solar panels a good deal , one community is trying to be the “first eco-sustainable city” in America. Reading about the new intentional community called Destiny, Florida makes me think it’s a greenwashed version of Celebration (that creepy Disney town). For now, we’ll give Rubenstein Public Relations (RPR), the PR firm tasked with helping to launch “this innovative community and spark interest among ‘green’ technology companies, developers and researchers,” the benefit of the doubt. We’ll just remind everyone about BioTown, USA . Some details about Destiny: it’s a 65-square mile city an hour south of Orlando; it will have the first E-Station in Florida, and it will be a hub for green businesses scurrying around to develop alt fuels and other clean technologies. What’s an E-Station, you ask? It’s “a 6,000-square-foot refueling station that will include electric automobile charging stations, along with a solar and geo-thermal ‘green-mart’ convenience store.” It’s used to be a gas station known as Key Stop . RPR may be willing to send eco-fans to Florida, but in the rest of the world, it’s still promoting the luxury lifestyle , representing Dezer Properties, which holds interests in things like the Trump Grande Ocean Resort and Residences. Don’t see many EV charging stations there. [Source: Rubenstein Public Relations] Continue reading Will it be your Destiny to live in a Florida eco-village?
