Ford touts European successes of new Ka and Fiesta

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Ford Fiesta Ford is justifiably proud of the sales figures that its new Ka and Fiesta small cars have been able to rack up amidst a struggling global market. These two products have helped the automaker increase its European market share by 0.5 percentage points to 8.8 percent. More importantly, it proves that consumers do want to buy small cars as long as they are stylish, comfortable and modern. Legislation from various governments that promotes the purchase of fuel efficient, low-emission cars has also boosted demand for the two vehicles. Both models were released late last year to a great deal of fanfare from the European automotive press, and U.S. sales of the new Fiesta are slated for 2010. To keep the hype machine in top gear, Ford will select 100 individuals in America and plans to give them keys to the Fiesta ahead of its official debut as they take part in the Fiesta Movement program. In somewhat related news, Ford has also announced its new Product Sustainability Index, a program that looks to improve the environmental, social and economic impact of automobiles through 8 product attributes that it believes are the key sustainability elements of a new vehicle. Click past the break for the full rundown on what goes into the PSI, how it applies to the new Fiesta and why Ford believes it’s important. Ford to give 100 drivers early access to Fiesta, apply now!

Auto Blog: Green Culture , Ford , Green Daily , USA Click above for a high-res gallery of the Ford Fiesta sedan Anxiously awaiting the Ford Fiesta’s official arrival in the States? Well, have we got news for you! Ford is looking for 100 volunteers to take the wheel of its brand new subcompact for six months, documenting the process along the way. Want in? You’ve got to “have a presence on the web,” and be able to write well or be able to capture a good story on video. Ford’s “Mission Control” will send each driver “secret assignments” to fulfill along the way. Best of all: it’s all free. No charge to use the car, keep it topped up with gas or keep it insured. General Motors did something similar to this with its Project Driveway campaign , but that was for hydrogen-powered cars that have no real chance of making it into the driveway of an average Joe any time soon. The Fiesta, on the other hand, is a car that’s already sold in International markets, and it’s on-sale date is already scheduled in the U.S. as a 2010 model. Instructable of the Day: 48-Volt electric bicycle

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , On Two Wheels Click above for a gallery of the EV Board Tracker Electric bicycles are becoming more and more common as people see a need to get themselves and little else from one place to another. Bicycles are an excellent way to travel in any case, and now that electric motors, controllers and batteries are becoming more widely available, cyclists are taking it upon themselves to create their own zero-emissions transportation solutions. Take, for example, this Instructable , which shows how to take a beach cruiser-style bicycle and transform it into an EV. There are kits available to convert normal bikes into electric machines, but this is a bit more complex than that. The result is something that resembles an old board track motorcycle that’s capable of hitting speeds of 50 miles per hour for around a hour using 48-volts worth of batteries. We love the arrangement of the components on the frame, which make the machine appear as if it’s powered by a V-Twin engine. See a video of the machine in action after the break.
