Click to see the complete gallery of the Tata Nano Sales of the Tata Nano haven’t started yet in its native land, India, but speculation about exporting the vehicle to Europe and America is already in the news. Now, Ratan Tata has announced that his company will be bringing the Nano to the Old Continent in the coming months, as well as for the Geneva Motor Show (the car was a hit in Geneva in 2008 ). Mr. Tata mentioned that the car would pass the EuroNCAP crash tests, as well as the Euro V anti-pollution legislation – two must-meet conditions for the car to be sold in Europe. There was no mention of the plant that would produce this model, just that prices will start at €5,000. By way of comparison, you can find a Dacia Sandero 1.2 for roughly €8,000. Oh, and an American Nano is also in the works. Click on the image above for a gallery of the Tata Nano The Tata Nano has endured more than its fair share of delays , having originally carried a planned sale date of October, 2008. Needless to say, that time frame came and went with zero Nanos rolling down the assembly line, due to a wide range of issues, not the least of which was a great deal of civil unrest at the first site where production was planned in West Bengal. The Nano’s assembly plant was relocated to Gurajat. All that bad news seems to be over today as Tata has announced that its little city car will finally be launched on March 23 and the Indian automaker will begin accepting orders just a few short weeks later. The price being thrown around is 100,000 rupees, which translates to just under $2,000 in U.S. dollars at current exchange rates. That would make the Nano, which comes equipped with a 625cc twin cylinder gasoline engine, the world’s cheapest automobile. Passat Lingyu We expected to see the hydrogen fuel cell-powered versions of the Passat Lingyu at the Los Angeles Auto Show last fall. We didn’t spot any back then, but these fuel cell VWs should be easier to find in California now that Volkswagen Group of America has announced that 16 of them will be used for fleet demonstrations by the California Fuel Cell Partnership in Sacramento. The Partnership believes that hydrogen vehicles are “the best option” for full-function vehicles that also have reduced emissions. The hydrogen Passat was developed a few years ago by VW engineers working with researchers from Tongji University and was used during the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. It can reach 90 mph and go 146 miles between refills. The 16 Chinese vehicles bring VW’s fuel cell fleet at the California Fuel Cell Partnership to 24. More details after the jump. Click above and scroll down to watch the video Just the other day, we first learned about the new NH 2 fuel cell tractor from New Holland, and today we’ve got a video of the emissionless machine in action. Thinking back on the few times we’ve actually piloted a tractor (and never anything quite this large), one previously unmentioned benefit to this design is that it looks extremely easy to drive. There are no gear changes and no clutch to concern yourself with and the machine moves about with nary a sound, though the same could be said of a battery-powered electric tractor as well. A look under the stubby hood reveals a very large hydrogen tank and fuel cell stack. The idea behind using a fuel cell in a tractor is that farmers could use renewable energy to extract hydrogen from water using electrolysis. Again, the same renewable energy could either power an electric tractor or one running on biofuels. Another problem with the current design is that there’s only enough hydrogen storage to run the tractor for a few hours. Perhaps generation 2, which is already under development, will solve that potential problem. Thanks for the tip, Sorin !
