Electric Vehicles International (EVI) unveiled it’s “Road Ready” commercial transport electric vehicle for the U.S. market in Chicago today at the Work Truck Show. EVI lists the two trucks it is offering on its website : eviLightTruck (center), a mid-speed electric vehicle (45-60 miles per hour) that has a customizable battery configuration. It can also be outfitted with a hybrid drive for extended range. This is a Class 3 truck, and the full-electric version that is on display costs between $50,000 to $55,000, with the batteries not included in that price (they are leased). eviRoute 1500 (on the right), a 40-mile range low-speed electric truck. This model sells for $15,000 to $20,000, including the batteries. Morgan pushing forward with LifeCar design, now a serial hybrid with ultracapacitors

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Morgan LifeCar One of last year’s most interesting vehicles that debuted at the Geneva Motor Show was the Morgan LifeCar concept . Using a hydrogen fuel cell that sent a constant flow of electrons to a set of electric motors, this machine represented a radical departure for Morgan, a company that’s generally most comfortable refining tried-and-true production methods. Although the LifeCar concept didn’t make it to this year’s show in Switzerland, evo reports that the British automaker is still working on the project, and it’s seen plenty of changes over the last year. Morgan reportedly plans to launch a production machine using the lightweight aluminum architecture pioneered on the LifeCar within the next few years. In place of the hydrogen fuel cell, the new model will use a small internal combustion engine to power a set of ultracapacitors that send power to an electric motor at each wheel. Instead of relying on electricity from the grid, this serial hybrid would sport an engine specifically optimized for efficiency over a narrow range of operation, minimizing fuel usage. If and when a hydrogen infrastructure ever exists, the platform can be adapted back in that direction. Lotus possibly delays new Esprit to 2011, may add hybrid drive

Filed under: Hybrid , BMW , Lotus The original Lotus Esprit was one of the most iconic sports car shapes ever penned and remained in production through various refreshes for 28 years. An all-new Esprit has been anticipated by Lotus fans for some time and most recently was expected to debut in 2010. The latest plan for the Esprit was to derive it from the platform of the new Evora but with significantly more power. Most of the powertrain rumors revolved around using BMW’s 4.4L V8 or possibly the 5.0L V10 from the M5. The latter is unlikely since BMW is moving toward smaller turbocharged and direct injected powerplants. The Esprit has now reportedly been pushed back by a year (to 2011), which is probably a good thing given the problems that other high end cars are currently having in the marketplace. The delay is believed to be cause, in part, by Lotus adding a hybrid drive to the Esprit. If Lotus is indeed planning to use the BMW 4.4L turbo V8 from the X6 and new 7 series, the most likely scenario would be for the British company to use the mild hybrid system that will debut in the 7-series and the Mercedes S-Class this summer. The mild hybrid adds relatively little weight while providing start-stop capability, reduced parasitic losses and a bit of electric boost and regenerative braking. Detroit 2009: Chrysler adds Jeep Patriot EV to its ER-EV lineup

Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Hybrid , Chrysler , Jeep , Detroit Auto Show Click above for high-res gallery of the Jeep Patriot EV Chrysler has added a fourth member to its family of prospective electric and extended range electric vehicles. The Jeep Patriot EV may be actually be the most viable member based on its relatively compact size. Like the larger Wrangler and Chrysler Town and Country, the Patriot uses electric drive with a lithium-ion battery pack of unknown capacity. The 150 kW motor drives the front wheels and the battery is claimed to give a 40-mile driving range on a charge. A 60-hp engine and generator extend the range to a claimed 400 miles. Acceleration to 60 mph is also claimed to be 8 seconds. Since the Patriot shares its platform with the Dodge Caliber, this powertrain could easily be added to the latter model, as well. Interestingly, Chrysler has chosen to use a significantly smaller range extender than the drive motor. A 60-hp range extender should have no problem operating in charge sustaining mode. However, during acceleration the battery would have to draw on more of its buffer, dipping well below the 30% “depletion” threshold to provide sufficient power. This may all prove to be moot if Chrysler remains unsustainable as a going concern.
