2009 Toyota Aygo drops CO emissions to 106 g/km

Auto Blog: MPG , Toyota , Europe/EU Click the Aygo for a high res gallery For the last several years, European drivers have had the option to buy a Toyota even smaller than the Yaris, a model known as the Aygo. The Aygo is built in a joint venture with Peugeot/Citroen and all three have received a refresh for 2009. The Aygo is available with a 1.0L three-cylinder gas engine with a 5-speed manual or semi-automatic transmission. Part of the 2009 update included the addition of something called Toyota Optimal Drive, which apparently is nothing more than using lower viscosity oil and adding a fuel cut-off during gear shifts. Nonetheless, the mileage for the manual gearbox version was bumped from 51.1 mpg (U.S.) to 52.3 mpg (U.S.) on the EU combined cycle. With TOD, CO 2 emissions drop from 108 g/km to 106 g/km. The all-aluminum three cylinder is also particularly light at 67 kg, which Toyota claims is the lightest ICE on the market. Detroit 2009: Johnson Controls shows off re3 concept

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Detroit Auto Show Click above for a gallery of the Johnson Controls re3 concept Johnson Controls is a name familiar to many in the automotive world as a Tier 1 supplier of parts – usually interior bits like seats and electronic gadgetry – to automakers all over the world. In an effort to show off some of the company’s latest bits and pieces, a complete concept car called the re3 has been created by the Wisconsin-based firm and debuted at the Detroit Auto Show . Like any proper concept these days, it covers its green bases, in this case featuring a plug-in hybrid powertrain complete with a lithium ion battery pack and eco-friendly renewable interior materials. The stated goal of the re3 concept is to show what Johnson Controls is capable of offering its customers, which, in this case, are larger automakers and not consumers directly. Johnson Controls has a joint venture with Saft to produce vehicular battery packs and in the re3, a pack large enough to provide EV-only power in city environments is tucked in between the seats in the center tunnel. Want all the details? There’s lots more after the break. Toyota to sell batteries to other automakers

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Toyota Click above for a gallery of the Toyota FT-EV concept Part of Tesla Motors’ ongoing business plan involves selling complete lithium ion battery packs to other auto manufacturers. The most recent example of this strategy was just announced at the Detroit Auto Show , with Tesla supplying packs to Daimler for its smart ed . Daimler, for its part, also wants to sell battery packs to its competitors. Joining these two manufacturers may soon be Toyota, as Executive Vice President Masatami Takimoto has said in an interview that the Japanese giant would like to produce packs for its rivals. Since Toyota has such a large investment into batteries for its current and future range of hybrids, plug-ins and fully electric vehicles, it only makes sense to capotalize on all forms of incoming profit. Toyota owns 60 percent of a joint venture with Panasonic to produce lithium ion batteries specifically for use in electric vehicles, and the JV already sells nickel metal hydride packs to some automakers.
