DC Auto Show: Destiny 2000 used to be a Fiero, now it’s a solar electric

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Solar , AutoblogGreen Exclusive , Green Daily , Washington DC Auto Show There is section of the DC Auto Show, called the Green Car Pavilion, that is intended to highlight alternative fuel vehicles. Before the show officially opens tomorrow, we managed to take a walk around the GCP and saw an interesting collection of vehicles parked there. One was the bright yellow ride that you see here: a 1985 Pontiac Fiero (well, so said the info sheet taped to the car, EV Album says it’s a 1986, see more details after the jump). A long time ago, certainly before the recent uptick in home electric car conversions, its gasoline guts were ripped out – professionally, of course, by Solar Electric Engineering of Santa Rosa, California – and replaced with 18 6-volt Trojan R-125 lead acid batteries and a series wound GE motor. With the conversion came a name change: from Fiero to Destiny 2000. Today, the Destiny 2000 can go 50 miles on a charge, has a top speed of 75 mph and a 0-60 time of 11.2 seconds. There was no one around to learn a bit more about the car, so in lieu of actual information, let’s imagine the fun one could have in a Fiero EV. Mitsubishi shifts future focus to eco-friendly auto development

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Hybrid , Mitsubishi Click above to view a high-res gallery of the Mitsubishi i MiEV For an automaker such as Mitsubishi , which makes most of its profits from the sales of four-wheel drive SUVs, times are especially tough. Market realities have forced the Japanese automaker to reprioritize its research and development spending; anything without a decidedly green tint has got to go. Taking the place of large gas-guzzling SUVs will be plug-in hybrids, small cars and fully-electric machinery. Unfortunately, such sweeping changes will take until 2013 to really take effect, so don’t expect to see Mitsubishi drop SUVs and large cars entirely from its lineup any time soon. Instead, the automaker seems likely to add fuel-saving features to its existing models as quickly as possible. Mitsubishi’s first foray into electric vehicles will be the production version of the i MiEV , which should be ready for sale in Japan and various European countries in 2010. Sales in the United States should begin in 2011. Hy Tric Motors offers new electric cars, and some we’ve seen before

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Green Culture , Hybrid , Green Daily , NEV (Neighborhood Electric Vehicle) Click above for a high-res gallery of the Hy Tric trike We got a tip recently about Hy Tric Motors , a company based in Ventura, California that offers electric vehicles and electric retro fit kits. The company seems to focus mostly on low-speed electric vehicles, but the Hy Tric Electro Cycle seen above has a top speed of 125 mpg. It costs $23,999, but there are virtually no other details available. In fact, the entire website is not set up to provide a whole lot of information about the cars. We can see pictures of the 2009 AFS Hy Tric 4 Seater (the green vehicle in the gallery below) that starts at $10,900 and the 2009 AFS Hy Tric EVCapus, a work truck for $13,900, but not much more about them. The only car that Hy Tric offers any real details on is the 2009 AFS Hy Tric Electro XRb-series , an EV that costs $9,999 and can go 60-90 miles on a full charge of its lead acid batteries (eight 12V/120AH packs). A 4 kW motor offers a top speed of 37 mph (can be limited to 25 mph to fall into the NEV category). Hy Tric also offers a series of conversion kits ranging from $2,500 (48 volt kit) to $5,000 (144 volts) to add onto your own vehicle. The site also lists a “2009 AFS Hy Tric LG1 Euro racer Model” that looks an awful lot like (ok, exactly like) the Triac electric car . Not sure what’s going on there. Reva Plans to Launch L-Ion Battery-Powered Car in Europe

The carmaker plans to launch its L-ion in Europe, with a lithium-ion battery upgrade that improves on its lead-acid predecessor, which sells for about $9,000. Could a lithium-ion upgrade come close to meeting that price point? India-based electric car maker Reva announced Monday that it plans a 2009 European launch of a lithium-ion battery-powered version of its long-selling electric car, along with a fast-charging station that can charge it in an hour. Since 2001, Reva has been making a lead-acid battery-powered car with a range of about 50 miles per charge. Reva has sold about 2,200 of those cars for about $9,000 apiece, according to the New York Times. The new lithium-ion battery-powered car, called the L-ion, will have a range of about 75 miles and a top speed of about 50 miles per hour, Reva said in a Monday press release. Reva also intends to market a fast-charge station that can charge the new car’s lithium-ion batteries in about an hour, compared to about six hours without the charging station. Reva’s lead-acid battery-powered car takes about eight hours to charge, the company said. Reva plans to have the cars and charging stations available for pre-order in February and start delivering them in May. The cars will be available through distributors in Norway, the United Kingdom, France, Cyprus, Greece, Spain, Belgium and Ireland, and Reva will seek to expand its network throughout Europe in the coming year, the company said. The company will also sell upgrade kits to convert lead-acid battery-powered Reva cars to lithium-ion batteries, the company said. Pricing for the L-ion and charging station – available for lease or purchase – won’t be announced until later this month, the company said. But if the L-ion’s price is anywhere close to the $9,000 for its lead-acid battery-powered predecessor, it could find itself in strong competition amongst carmakers seeking to supply urban dwellers with low-cost electric-powered transportation for shorter drives.

Toyota Unveils Prius Hybrid Electric Cars

The 2010 Toyota Prius includes a new revised Hybrid Synergy Drive system which vows to be one of the top electric cars. The electric vehicle delivers improved fuel economy. Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc will premiere its new 2010 Prius Hybrid electric car at the upcoming 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The vehicle offers a revised Hybrid Synergy Drive system and promises to deliver improved fuel economy. “As the world’s leading hybrid vehicle, the Toyota Prius offers anything but an ordinary driving experience,” Toyota said in a statement on its Web site. Hybrid electric cars run quiet, at least most of them do. What’s unique about the Primus is that drivers will experience nothing more than a whisper when starting the new Hybrid ignition system. “You’ll start the car to hear just a whisper – and be taken aback to discover that despite its apparent meekness, the Toyota Prius pulls off like a dream and powerfully overtakes its competitors,” Toyota said. One of the things striking about the vehicle are the many features it has. It has no ignition key and uses Prius’ Smart Key System. Drivers start the car by hitting a power button while pressing on the brake pedal. “The Toyota Prius hybrid car does not have a traditional ignition and key, but instead features an advanced keyless start-up,” The car maker said. Electric cars are the goal for every auto maker and the race is on to see who can build the better vehicle. Next year will be filled with battery powered cars and low fuel capacity. General Motors, Ford, Nissan and Chrysler have already developed similar Hybrid vehicles to display next month.

New Upcoming Lexus HS 250h hybrid spied for the first time!

Toyota’s Lexus brand is on the cutting edge of green luxury motoring, and the Japanese automaker has no plans to give up that distinction any time soon. Lexus will debut two new hybrid-only models at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show — a yet to be named model based on the Toyota Prius and a more sedan-like HS 250h — the latter of which our spies have spotted for the first time! Lexus will show an all-new hybrid model at January’s Detroit Auto Show, tentatively dubbed the HS250h. Earlier reports had the HS250h pegged as the Lexus-badged Prius model, but it is now clear that the HS250h will be a separate sedan model. The HS250h is closely linked to Toyota’s upcoming ‘SAI’ model – internally named the 500L – which should be the first vehicle in Toyota’s new Prius brand, slotting between the current Prius and the Camry Hybrid. Both models will take on a more sedan-like body style than the standard Prius but will still use a Prius-derived nickel metal hydride battery pack. Powertrains remain unclear, but our sources indicate either a 2.0L or a 2.5L four-cylinder has been earmarked for the new model. The 250 moniker would seem to indicate the 2.5L, but Lexus hybrid nameplates tend to exaggerate engine displacement (as in the 5.0L LS600h). To differentiate itself from the lesser Toyota model, the HS250h will feature an onboard computer system similar to BMW’s iDrive, LED lights and plenty of luxury amenities. The Lexus HS250h is expected to begin production in Japan in July 2009, with the Toyota model following a few months later in November. Check back for more details and live image of the HS250h after the Detroit show kicks off next month.
