Ecotality , an electric transportation and storage company, has been big-timing it lately with the likes of Nissan . Together with the Pima Association of Governments ( PAG ), they have formed an EV Micro-Climate Working Group with a goal of making Pima County , which encompasses Tucson, Arizona, the charging-infrastructured home of many electric vehicles. When Nissan launches its electric car in 2010, they will make sure to have some of their battery-operated lovelies available for public and private fleets in the region while Ecotality is to help with the planning and installation of the charging stations. Although the project is being implemented to support the vehicles from Nissan, the public stations will meet charge system standards and be equipped with the J1772 connector that the Society of Engineers (SAE) has been working on . This should be the same plug other future electric cars will be equipped with. For older, pre-J1772 electric vehicles, we imagine adapters will be necessary. Full press release after the break.
Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2010 Lotus Exige S "The same technology that makes a lightweight car a high performer also makes it efficient - how many cars have performance figures of 0 - 100 km/h in 4.77 secs but produce only 199 g/km CO2?" That question was posed by Mike Kimberley, Chief Executive of Group Lotus plc, and he's got a point. As part of its ongoing quest to shave weight, Lotus has blessed us with what are undoubtedly the most efficient fossil fuel-burning sportscars the world has ever seen. Of course, Lotus vehicles have also proven rather adept at accepting EV conversions for this same reason. For the 2010 model year, Lotus has upped the ante yet again by incrementally improving the aerodynamics of its Exige S, nudging up the fuel efficiency and lowering the carbon emissions in the process. A revised fascia lets more air in to cool the radiator and twin oil coolers and a new rear wing reduces drag and still puts down 42 kilograms (93 pounds) of downforce at 160 km/h (about 100 mph). Add it all up, and the new Exige S emits 199 g/km CO 2 and achieves European Combined Cycle ratings of 8.5 litres/100 km (33.2 mpg). Car Blog Greenthe full press release after the break.
Click above for a high-res gallery of the Ford iosis Max Concept Ford is preparing to make a major shift to smaller cars over the next few years, starting with the new Fiesta at the end of this year and the new European-based Focus next year. When that next-generation Focus lands in the U.S., it is expected to look a lot like the concept that Ford is showing in Geneva this week. The shape and styling details of the iosis Max give a preview of next years Focus five door hatch although the head-light clusters and doors will surely be more conventional. The sliding rear doors are unlikely to make it to production either. What will make it through is the drivetrain. This is the third Ford concept this year (along with the Lincoln Concept C and Volvo S60 concepts in Detroit) powered by the new 1.6L EcoBoost four cylinder along with the PowerShift dual clutch transmission. With the automatic start stop system, this combination is expected to top 40 mpg with ease when it arrives.
While the partnership between Mitsubishi and Peugeot to bring electric vehicles to market has been officially official for some time, the deal we told you about that would see the Peugeot lion logo perched proudly on the nose of the Japanese automaker's i MiEV hasn't. Until now. On the eve of the unveiling of its " Prototype iMiEV concept " in Geneva comes word that the two have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that would see them collaborating on vehicles based upon the iMiEV. We are guessing that the timing of this announcement and the imminent reveal of the slightly-upsized right-hand-drive prototype of the iMiEV is not coincidental. It is said that MiMoCo will be doing the manufacturing in Japan while the extra showroom floor space that Peugeot can offer in Europe should help boost sales volumes and keep costs down. While it is unknown what sort of sales targets the companies have for the car, we do know that GS Yuasa and Mitsubishi plan on making enough batteries for 10,000 i MiEVs once sales start with a doubling of that capacity within a year or two. As to what a Peugeot iMiEV will look like, until pictures are taken we can only lean on the magic of photoshop and present you the slightly altered image above. Press release after the break.
How do you make your stock price jump by two-thirds in today's economic atmosphere? If you are Axeon , Europe's largest independent supplier of lithium ion battery packs, you announce your new battery nearly doubles the range of your customer's trucks. After completing a Department of Transport-funded two year program, the Dundee, Scotland-based company says the new power supply it developed allowed a 3.5 ton delivery vehicle to almost double its range, from 123 km (76 miles) to 241 km (150 miles). The vehicle in question should be look familiar to our faithful readers as the purpose-built electric truck by Modec has made many appearances on ABG . The company's result contrasts with those obtained by an independent test which indicated a 25 per cent improvement over an urban delivery cycle on a single charge. Axeon not only supplies Allied Vehicles and powered that electric Ruf Porsche , but apparently is also working with Daimler to put its lithium in the smart ed . Modec is so pleased with the results it plans to offer the new pack by the second half of the year. If it works that well, then we're pleased too. Full press release after the break.
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Nissan , USA With the economic outlook for most automakers ranking somewhere between a disaster and a catastrophe, serious decisions about money-saving cuts have to be made. In the case of Nissan , it has been decided that its midterm business plan (nice to know they actually have one) that covers the firm's activities from 2008 to 2012 is being suspended. Does that translate into postponing their much ballyhooed future electric cars ? According to one website it does. GreenCarWebsite is saying that the automaker will suspend its electric vehicle plans as a part of the cost-cutting actions. Are they right? Maybe not. Reading through a description of the cuts from the Nissan press release, it states that "...commitments on quality and zero-emission vehicles will be retained." Since their only other zero-emission vehicle is still a relatively nascent hydrogen fuel cell SUV , we strongly suspect the Japanese company will still try to deliver an all-electric car to the American market by 2010. A loan from the U.S. government may help them the process along though. Car Blog Greenthe full extent of their actions in the official release after the break.
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Green Daily Click above to enlarge the JJAD P1-E Gordon Murray isn't the only ex-McLaren F1 designer that is now branching out into greener pastures. Jim Dowle from JJAD has announced plans to build a new electric sportscar, and it sounds like a winner. A lithium ion battery pack is said to provide a range of 230 miles, though that figure will surely go down as the driver explores its amazing acceleration. How's a run to sixty miles per hour in 2.9 seconds sound? Such performance is capable due to the P1-E's dual electric motors that provide the gullwing-doored coupe all-wheel drive. Assuming that JJAD gets the necessary funding, Dowle expects to have running prototypes created within the year and hopes for production shortly thereafter, with prices for the P1-E coming in at around £55,000 (about $75,000). If that happens, Tesla is going to have some rather serious competition in the all-electric sportscar market. See the full press release after the break.
Auto Blog: Green Daily , Lightweight , UK Thanks to some digging through the UK Intellectual Property Office, GreenMotor has uncovered what may be the name for Gordon Murray's upcoming city car. Up until now, we've known the city car as Type 25 or T.25, which was so named because it is Murray's 25th design, but it now seems possible that it will be known as the iStream when it actually goes on sale in a few years. The other two names trademarked by Murray are iFrame and iCentre, and we're not exactly sure how they relate to the T.25, or if they do at all. There is some speculation that iCentre could refer to specific service stations for the car. We also wonder if iFrame could possibly be the name for the microcar's innovative flat-packable architecture. On a final note, are you as ready for the iTrend and eTrend naming schemes to end as we are?
Auto Blog: Ford , Natural Gas Roush Engineering is following up last year's introduction of a propane-fueled Ford F-150 with a similarly-fueled F-250 Super Duty. Propane as a fuel tends to be more appealing to fleet users, who in some cases have their own propane filling tanks on site and the heavy duty F-250 is mostly used by fleets. Roush is offering the propane conversions on either complete new trucks or on existing 2009 and new model trucks. The trucks are available in two configurations. Those who need a longer range can opt for a 62-gallon tank mounted in the bed. Many fleet users operate the trucks locally and bring them back to base nightly. For those users, extra cargo capacity is more important and a smaller fuel tank mounted under the bad is available that still yields a 250-mile range. The conversions are priced at $7,995, and there is a $5,000 federal tax credit available.
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Zap , NEV (Neighborhood Electric Vehicle) Zap is coming to New Orleans for the annual National Automobile Dealers Association expo this weekend and is bringing a surprise vehicle with it. The company has announced it will debut a new five-passenger, low-speed electric van at the show. Unlike the Zap Xebra, the new Zap Shuttle has four wheels (like the Zap Truck XL ) and 108 cubic feet of carrying space. The NEV can carry up to 900 pounds and costs $14,700. For a few extra bucks, you can add air conditioning, solar panels or a rapid charger to the package. The standard van can recharge in six hours from a 110 volt outlet and that'll be good enough to drive for 30 miles. Zap says it will also debut the Alias electric car at the NADA show. More details on that that when we get them. The old standby, the Zap Xebra, hasn't been totally forgotten. It recently made an appearance on the TV show Monk; watch a video of that after the break.
