Audi R15 TDI may add two more races to 2009 ALMS schedule

Audi R15 – Click above to enlarge American Audi race fans were hugely disappointed when the German automaker announced at the end of 2008 that it would not be competing in the full 2009 American Le Mans Series season. This came as a particular blow since Audi has built an all new car for 2009, the R15 TDI. Instead, Audi planned to run the car only at the season opener at Sebring later this month and at Le Mans in June. We now have an unconfirmed report that R15s will take to the track at least two more times this year. The R15 is now expected to appear at the last two ALMS races of 2009. The 10-hour Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta typically draws a big field including Audi’s arch-rival Peugeot. With the cars already in the U.S., it makes sense to hit the season finale at Laguna Seca as well. With only three races on the schedule in ALMS, Audi obviously won’t be a challenger for the full season Green Challenge championship, but it will be interesting to see how they fare when they do run. California Air Resources Board proposes Low Carbon Fuel Standard

The California Air Resources Board wants to reduce the amount of carbon in transportation fuels as a way to reduce the resulting greenhouse gas emissions. One way CARB wants to meet California’s stated goal of a statewide GHG emissions cap for 2020 (which would be based on 1990 emissions) is a Low Carbon Fuel Standard. Since at least 2007, CARB has been looking into implementing a Low Carbon Fuel Standard, and yesterday made an official announcement of a public hearing to consider the adoption of this standard. As a preliminary measure, this standard “would reduce GHG emissions by reducing the carbon intensity of transportation fuels used in California by an average of 10 percent by the year 2020.” The draft regulations issued yesterday call for the fuel industry to meet the first step of the standard by 2011. Up to 20 percent of the conventional fuels used today would be replaced by things like electricity, hydrogen, natural gas and biofuels. CARB will hold a public hearing on the proposal on April 23rd and 24th. More details here and at GreenTechMedia . Morgan pushing forward with LifeCar design, now a serial hybrid with ultracapacitors

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Morgan LifeCar One of last year’s most interesting vehicles that debuted at the Geneva Motor Show was the Morgan LifeCar concept . Using a hydrogen fuel cell that sent a constant flow of electrons to a set of electric motors, this machine represented a radical departure for Morgan, a company that’s generally most comfortable refining tried-and-true production methods. Although the LifeCar concept didn’t make it to this year’s show in Switzerland, evo reports that the British automaker is still working on the project, and it’s seen plenty of changes over the last year. Morgan reportedly plans to launch a production machine using the lightweight aluminum architecture pioneered on the LifeCar within the next few years. In place of the hydrogen fuel cell, the new model will use a small internal combustion engine to power a set of ultracapacitors that send power to an electric motor at each wheel. Instead of relying on electricity from the grid, this serial hybrid would sport an engine specifically optimized for efficiency over a narrow range of operation, minimizing fuel usage. If and when a hydrogen infrastructure ever exists, the platform can be adapted back in that direction. It’s Friday: one teeny, tiny question about the Watchmen movie

So, there’s this Watchmen movie coming out today in the U.S. Maybe you’ve seen the hype. Until a few weeks ago, I knew absolutely zero about the plot or the characters or anything. But, because I’d heard such good things about the original comic, I thought I should Car Blog Greenit through once before the movie comes out, otherwise if I ever do Car Blog Greenit, my experience will be tempered by the film’s visuals. Anyway, while I was reading it, two panels caught my AutoblogGreen-tuned eye. Back in the mid-1980s, when Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons were working on the book, they used a passing reference electric vehicles as a type of future technology that was bypassed by a new teleportation ability that one of the characters, Dr. Manhattan, finds himself able to perform. The Miami Herald says that director Zack Snyder has made a good movie “while still slavishly following its plot, practically panel by panel.” So, one thing I’ll be watching for is to see if this tiny little tidbit from the comic pages has made the leap. I’ll admit, sometimes this job affects my life in very odd ways. Enjoy. Michelin signs on as title sponsor of ALMS Green Challenge

Auto Blog: MPG , Racing The American Le Mans Series launched its Green Challenge last fall at the Petit Le Mans race at Road Atlanta. For 2009, ALMS is making it a season-long fixture. Today in Washington, D.C., ALMS CEO Scott Atherton announced that the French tire maker Michelin has signed on as a title sponsor of the Green Challenge. Participants in ALMS races will be evaluated on a formula that factors in fuel consumption and performance to produce a score based on which car extracts the most from the energy it uses. At each of the 2009 races, the tire maker will award the Michelin Green X Challenge award to the prototype and GT teams that get the best green scores. At the end of the season, the EPA, DOE and Society of Automotive Engineers will present the overall Green Challenge awards to the manufacturers with the best series-long performance. New hybrid tech being developed for ALMS, possible new fuel to come

Auto Blog: Diesel , Ethanol , EV/Plug-in , Hybrid , Racing These days, its not much easier to run a racing series than it is to run a car company. However, if there is any series boss who could be said to be in an “enviable” situation, it is Scott Atherton, CEO of the American Le Mans Series. Coming off its tenth anniversary in 2008, the series had its most successful season yet. However, the loss of Audi and Porsche as full time competitors certainly stings, although not to the same degree that Formula One is feeling right now. Even with manufacturers cutting budgets across the board, Atherton sees reason for optimism. In an interview last week at the Detroit Auto Show , Atherton revealed that another manufacturer will announce a GT race program at the opening race in Sebring in March. In addition, at least one other manufacturer is working with ALMS officials on approving a new type of hybrid technology. Finally, a fourth fuel may be added to the mix at ALMS events. There are already three fuels being used by competitors: diesel, E10 and cellulosic E85. An energy company has approached the series about another alternative although Atherton declined to be specific about what it is at this time. Check out the full interview at Green Fuels Forecast .
