Piaggio MP3 Hybrid coming to America first quarter 2010

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Piaggio MP3 Hybrid Good news for eccentric scooter lovers who live in the States: Piaggio’s MP3 Hybrid is coming to America in the first quarter of 2010. This revelation came out while Piaggio Group USA President and CEO Paolo Timoni was sharing television time with our friend Wes from Hell For Leather on Fox Car Report Live . According to Timoni, the hybrid three-wheeler will be priced around $9,000. Other details that we previously didn’t know is that the hybrid scooter will be able to travel up to 40 miles on electricity alone. Riders can switch the scooter into electric-only mode if they want to use zero gas and there will also be three separate hybrid modes to choose from, including a performance mode that can “boost performance” by an impressive 85 percent. The result of all of this hybrid wizardry? Up to 140 miles per gallon, depending on riding conditions and distance traveled. Neil Young’s eco-car album, Fork in the Road, now ready for pre-order

We still have a month to wait until Neil Young’s new “Fork in the Road” album (aka, his eco-car concept record ), but Reprise Records is ready to take your money now . Unlike some deals in the green car business, if you pre-order the record, you won’t need to wait all that long to get what you paid for. The record drops on April 7 and includes a paean to Johnathan Goodwin, Young’s LincVolt mechanic, called “Johnny Magic.” Other song titles, according to Pitchfork , are “Cough Up the Bucks,” “Hit the Road,” and “Get Around.” The pre-order price for the CD/DVD set is $21.98, plus an additional $6.49 or $16.49 shipping (those are the costs to Michigan, anyway). Young recorded the album with his touring band between shows last year . You can watch Neil Young’s earphones-stuck-in-an-apple video for “Fork in the Road” here . Reuters says that work on the LincVolt is now finished and that a documentary film about driving the car gasoline-free across America is planned. Geneva 2009: Top ten diesels you can’t get in America!

One of the first things you notice when you start wandering around the Geneva Motor Show is that virtually every major automaker offers diesel engines. Lots of them. Many of them are even in cars that we can get in the U.S. market but only with gasoline engines. As our regular readers know, I’m a fan of modern diesel engines. Being in Geneva gives me a chance to present, in no particular order, 10 examples of cars available in the U.S. (or available soon) that could really benefit from having a diesel option. All the mileage figures have been converted to U.S. mpg. No need to use glowplugs, let’s just get started . Geneva 2009: Euro-spec Tata Nano (it’s bigger!) and all-electric Indica

Click on image to see the three upcoming Tata Euro-spec models As we reported, Tata has an Euro-spec Nano on the works . The changes from the Indian version include adding an all-aluminium I3 MPFI engine with a 5-speed automatic transmission and electric power steering. The engine should address all the concerns about Tata’s green credentials, as it will be Euro V compliant and have emissions under the 100 g/km of CO 2 mark. The Nano Europa will also include significant security equipment like ABS, ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and airbags. There’s also a change in size, as the Nano Europa has a slightly longer wheelbase of 2.28 meters. Tata’s all-electric Indica, which was also shown during the SIAM Expo , uses polymer lithium batteries that are expected to offer a range of 200 km (120 mi) and a 0-to-60 km/h (0 to 40 mph) time of less than 10 seconds. The model was adapted by Miljo Grenland/Innovasjon of Norway, where Tata UK’s owns 70 percent of the shares. Tata will also include a third model, called Prima, in its future European lineup. Auto X Prize deadline has passed; thoughts on the purse split

The Automotive X Prize’s deadline for registration has passed and now we get to wait and see just who’s going to be actually participating in the upcoming high-mileage competition. The organizers say that the last few days and hours before the deadline were “an absolute firestorm of phone calls, emails, and overnight packages.” From the looks of it, there might be 100 teams actually registered (40 already committed and then more than 50 applications that arrived in the last week), but somewhere between 60 and 70 is much more likely. We’ll have to wait for the staff to go through the papers and see if everything was submitted correctly before we get a complete list of all the teams released. One other bit of information that the X Prize organizers have shared on their blog is the reasoning for changing the $10 million prize purse from a 3-to-1 split between mainstream and alternative classes to a $5 million mainstream prize and two alternative class winners – one for a vehicle with side-by-side seating and one for a vehicle with tandem seating – who will each split the other $5 million. Details available here . Canada wants North American fuel efficiency standard

Canada’s Environment Minister Jim Prentice believes that there should be a single fuel efficiency standard for all countries in North America. He says, “At this point in the United States, it would appear as though they are headed toward a 35 mile a gallon standard by 2020 and that would start to come into effect in the 2011 model year. We’ve essentially been prepared to go in that same direction.” That 35 mpg standard is good enough for Canada if it’s good enough for the United States, right? It makes sense for automakers that sell their products across all of North America, especially to the U.S. domestic manufacturers that build hundreds of thousands of cars in Canada and Mexico each year. It’s not perfect, though, as California is moving to create its own fuel economy standards under the guise of greenhouse gas emissions regulations. “The first thing that has to happen, however, is that the United States has to land with their own domestic policy. It’s by no means clear how this will emerge from Congress over the course of the next year,” Prentice said. Nissan plans EV network where Americans actually stop

The Nissan EV team may have been spending some time in Sweden . The automaker is thinking out loud about an EV charging network that takes into consideration where people actually stop their cars. The planned network for America may therefore include places such as fast-food restaurants and other roadside stops or even car dealers, which could offer recharging as a courtesy. Electricity at these posts would be paid using a credit card. With these chargers, a car could get up to 80 percent battery charge (enough for about 80 miles) in about 30 minutes, is Nissan’s upcoming EVs, scheduled for 2012, perform as expected. The general layout of the planned network uses three types of charge points: home chargers in the garage; workplace charging, including parking lots and garages in downtown business areas; and a public infrastructure built around normal transportation areas like shopping malls, movie theaters, restaurants and airports. Geneva Preview: Volkswagen unleashes the goods on new Polo

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Volkwagen Polo Volkswagen is trotting out its new fifth-generation Polo at the Geneva Motor Show tomorrow, but we’ve got a slew of details and images of the new model to share today. Looking very much like a shrunken Golf, it may take a trained eye to tell the difference between the VW’s latest hatchbacks at first glance (see the new VW MK VI Golf here ). Volkswagen’s keen to point out that the new Polo is a full 7.5 percent lighter than the outgoing model despite growing in every meaningful dimension and it’s still expected to score a perfect 5-star safety rating in Euro NCAP crash testing. In Germany, the Polo will come with the buyers choice of four gasoline and three diesel engines, many equipped with turbochargers and direct injection. VeeDub’s latest 7-speed DSG transmission will also be available on select models. The most frugal trim will carry the BlueMotion badge and attain 62 mpg U.S. in European combined testing with just 96 grams CO 2 per kilometer, making it the most fuel efficient diesel-burning 5-seater in the world. Sales are slated to begin in Germany by the end of June with the rest of Europe coming just two weeks later. In case you missed it earlier, the subcompact car is finally coming to America , possibly as early as 2010, so VW definitely has our interest piqued. 16 VW’s Passat Lingyu fuel cell vehicles finally make it to the U.S.

Passat Lingyu We expected to see the hydrogen fuel cell-powered versions of the Passat Lingyu at the Los Angeles Auto Show last fall. We didn’t spot any back then, but these fuel cell VWs should be easier to find in California now that Volkswagen Group of America has announced that 16 of them will be used for fleet demonstrations by the California Fuel Cell Partnership in Sacramento. The Partnership believes that hydrogen vehicles are “the best option” for full-function vehicles that also have reduced emissions. The hydrogen Passat was developed a few years ago by VW engineers working with researchers from Tongji University and was used during the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. It can reach 90 mph and go 146 miles between refills. The 16 Chinese vehicles bring VW’s fuel cell fleet at the California Fuel Cell Partnership to 24. More details after the jump.
