VIDEO: All aboard the Aptera tour with co-founder Steve Fambro
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Lightweight , Aptera , USA Click above for a high res gallery of the Aptera 2e Josh , the Aptera 2e fan who has been recently hanging out in parking garages and generally going camera crazy in his quest to slake the thirst of his ApteraForum friends, hit the devotee motherlode the other day at TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design). Yes, he got chauffeured about Long Beach, California by Steve Fambro, co-founder and current CTO of the start up vehicle company, who not only answered his questions without swearing him to secrecy, but even let him record the whole event on video. Steve talked a lot about the Automaptics system installed in the 2e and said it was something they were evaluating, as he repeatedly touched the screen and talked about various vehicle to grid ( V2G ) options and accessing the 2e through the internet. From this drive, as well as from a hastily-called meet-and-greet with future Aptera owners held the next evening, we were able to learn the vehicle is set to undergo even more changes before it starts production. For one, the wheelspan is set to be reduced by six inches. The suspension geometry is also set to undergo some revision and some changes may be made to the body to better deal with crosswinds. Hit the jump for the video. BREAKING: Full Aptera specs released at TED
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Aptera Click above for a gallery of the Aptera 2e The Aptera Forum is buzzing with excitement today as the official set of specifications for the upcoming 2e have been released at the Technology, Entertainment, Design ( TED ) conference that’s taking place right now. Early measurements of the car’s very wide front track and comparatively short wheelbase have now been confirmed, along with a weight of just 1,500 pounds and a coefficient of drag of just 0.15, a figure that handily beats even the super aerodynamic GM EV1. Hard data on the electric drivetrain is also rather intriguing. The electric motor offers up 60 lb-ft of torque at an undetermined RPM and the lithium ion phosphate battery pack has a capacity of 10-13 kWh, leading many to believe that there will be an optional pack capable of extending range from the standard 100 miles up to 125 miles. Other interesting bits include a standard emergency tire inflation system, interior fabrics and plastics made from recycled materials, a smart key and solar glass. A rear backup camera is optional, as is a DVD-based navigation system. See the complete breakdown after the break. Thanks to Josh for providing the list ! Brace of Aptera spotted in the wild, dimensions measured!
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Aptera , USA While waiting to make its public debut tomorrow at the Technology, Entertainment, Design ( TED ) conference tomorrow, the pre-production Aptera 2e was chillin’ with its Typ-1 prototype brother in a nearby parking garage. Coincidentally, an Aptera fan named Josh just happened to be hanging out in the same garage with a camera and a tape measure. The birds in question were being watched by a security guard with strict orders not to let anyone touch them. Luckily, no one mentioned photography or measuring tapes and so the fancier went to work, careful not to come into physical contact with the vehicles. As you can see from the many photos in the gallery below, the newer 2e is quite a bit, though subtly, different than the original. The nose is closer to the ground while its back seems to have a sexier curve that’s amplified by the window that extends further down its spine. As far as the measurements go, the interloper recorded a width of 91 inches (7 feet 7 inches). The other measurements couldn’t be taken as precisely but the height of the 2e seemed to be about 52 inches with a length of approximately 14 feet, 10 inches. We suspect video of the craft may appear soon, since we’ve heard rumors that Aptera fans will be hiding behind grassy knolls along the demonstration ride route. Auto X Prize, DOE launch Fuel Our Future student website
Auto Blog: Etc. , Green Daily , Automotive X-Prize Know anyone who’s in school? The Progressive Automotive X Prize (AXP) launched a new website today that targets K-12 students in the U.S. with information about the vehicles and fuels of the future. It’s called, ta-da, Fuel Our Future Now . Divided into three sections – for elementary, middle school and high school students – the website provides videos, puzzles and interactive labs intended to teach students about energy use in vehicles. Teachers will also be able to get curriculum ideas and support for their classroom. While the site is up and running now, more features will be added in the coming months. This website is the first of three education program components that the AXP will bring to students along with the actual AXP competition. The other two will be a national high school student competition (something like an essay contest) and a series of student challenges that will take place in the AXP host cities when the competition vehicles roll into town.. Just FYI, there is also a Fuel Our Future website, and out of date site run by the Western States Biofuels Association. Aptera design team brings same philosophy to solar-powered boat
Auto Blog: Etc. , EV/Plug-in , Solar , Transportation Alternatives , USA Using the same high efficiency and “user first” philosophy they applied to the Aptera 2e , Jason Hill of Eleven and Nathan Armstrong of Motive Industries have done the impossible and re-made the pontoon boat into a thing of environmentally-sound beauty. On behalf of the Tamarack Lake Electric Boat Company , the engineering and design team has taken the boat builder’s signature craft, the solar-powered Loon, and re-thought it from stem to stern, water to sky. The result is a breakthrough design that incorporates full functionality and flexibility. Due to the core composite construction, its twin hulls are practically puncture-proof and are now integrated into the deck, giving it unbeatable rigidity, yet keeping the weight low. The solar panel-bearing SunRise[TM] roof system is made of the same material and can lower itself down to the top of the rails to create a convenient compact package when it’s time to put the boat on a trailer. The 22-foot craft will feature a flexible activity area with innovative storage spaces and can come with side panels made from a variety of eco-materials including bamboo, natural fibers and recycled plastic. All this and we haven’t even touched on one of its coolest features yet. Hit the jump to see what that is and get some technical details. Pics a plenty: Aptera 2e caught with no pants on
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Aptera , USA We’ve been waiting patiently for actual photographs of the new pre-production version of the Aptera 2e to appear so as to have a better look at the transformation that our favorite flightless bird has undergone . Renders are nice , but like the song says, “Ain’t nothing like the real thing, baby.” We thought they might arrive in an official Aptera newsletter but it seems an avid fan has beaten them to the punch. The Aptera aficionado caught the 2e without its wheelpants on after making the ride to Idealab inside a narrow trailer and whipped out a camera to capture the car inside and out. Besides taking pictures, the fan (known as “apt2123h” on ApteraForum ) got to ask a few questions and it seems our suspicions about a gas-only model have now been confirmed. As well, they were told that, “The first vehicles should be to the first people on the waiting list by October.” Lots of other questions are answered by the pics in the gallery below. Aptera’s Job One deadline comes and goes without a word
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Green Daily , Aptera Click above for a high-res gallery of the Aptera 2e The problem with setting (or at least publicly announcing) deadlines is that they have a way of sneaking up on you. Aptera has already missed their self-imposed deadline that was set at the end of 2008 and pushed retail deliveries back to October 2009 . When the company announced that delay, they also said, “Despite our well-intentioned efforts, we were unable to complete that vehicle before the close of the year, so it’s now slated for January 16.” Well, that’s today, and we’ve heard bupkis about Job One today. The Aptera website’s news section doesn’t have a new release, but does say, “we’re working hard towards our production launch.” We’ve asked Aptera for an update, and will have news for you as soon as we get it. Tip submitted by Jason C., who asks: Why do they keep giving release dates when they know they cant deliver?
