We heart the X Prize (just like everyone else); 50 teams expected to compete
There’s nothing wrong with tooting your own horn from time to time, just so long as you happen to be deserving of praise. Such is the case with the Progressive Automotive X Prize, which says that it’s managed to score more than a billion impressions (combined between web, print, radio and television) from the media for the 2008 calendar year. Expect plenty more coverage over the next year-and-a-half, with a good deal of it coming from Consumer Reports . We’ll forgive them (this time) for neglecting to mention ABG’s ongoing coverage of the event, which you can follow at this link . Even better, the X Prize’s own official blog says that 88 percent of all stories that mentioned the event were highly favorable. That’s good news for the 25 registered teams along with the numerous others that have signed Letters of Intent to compete. There’s only about a week left for teams to register to compete, and the event’s organizers believe that there will be a total of about 50 teams that make it to the actual competition. Consumer Reports teams up with the Automotive X Prize for MPGe, safety tests
The Automotive X Prize will get help with the safety and education portions of its competition from Consumer Reports. Consumer Reports will be the competition’s “Official Active Safety Testing Partner.” We spoke with the Auto X Prize’s senior director , Cristin Lindsay, during the Detroit Auto Show, and she said that safety is paramount, both for the drivers and people who come out to watch. Having a trusted name like Consumer Reports helping to conduct pre-race safety inspections and active safety performance tests should convince outsiders that these sometimes unusual body shapes are indeed fit for use. Another bit of news is that Consumer Reports will use MPGe (miles per gallon energy equivalent) when it tests plug-in and alternative fuel vehicles in the future. The press release does not explicitly say Consumer Reports will use the X Prize’s criteria, but the X Prize’s Carrie Fox told us that, “The plan, and it’s still a plan, is for them to use the MPGe standard we’ve come up with.” You can Car Blog Greenan excerpt from the current official rules describing the MPGe calculations after the jump or Car Blog Greenthe whole ruleset in PDF . Auto X Prize, DOE launch Fuel Our Future student website
Auto Blog: Etc. , Green Daily , Automotive X-Prize Know anyone who’s in school? The Progressive Automotive X Prize (AXP) launched a new website today that targets K-12 students in the U.S. with information about the vehicles and fuels of the future. It’s called, ta-da, Fuel Our Future Now . Divided into three sections – for elementary, middle school and high school students – the website provides videos, puzzles and interactive labs intended to teach students about energy use in vehicles. Teachers will also be able to get curriculum ideas and support for their classroom. While the site is up and running now, more features will be added in the coming months. This website is the first of three education program components that the AXP will bring to students along with the actual AXP competition. The other two will be a national high school student competition (something like an essay contest) and a series of student challenges that will take place in the AXP host cities when the competition vehicles roll into town.. Just FYI, there is also a Fuel Our Future website, and out of date site run by the Western States Biofuels Association. No 2009 Saturn Astra – too many 2008 models still available
Auto Blog: Saturn , USA Vehicle models have different life spans in different countries, and Americans are used to having new – or at least refreshed – cars pretty much every few years. One model that the U.S. will not be getting new in 2009 is the Saturn Astra. The reason is that Saturn still has a 139-day supply of the 2008 models. Canada will still get a 2009 edition. The car hasn’t been a star seller, having found about 12,000 owners in the U.S. during 2008. GM is planning on resuming new Astra deliveries in late summer or early fall as a 2010 model , but is skipping the 2009 model year altogether. The Saturn Astra is based on the Opel/Vauxhall Astra and is built in GM’s plant in Antwerp, Belgium. GM blames the exchange rate between the Euro and the Dollar for the low sales, though we’re sure there are other factors at play, as well.
