There are already numerous navigation systems available now that can download traffic data and compare it against route information programmed by the driver. But what if you know where you're going and don't program the nav? That's what BMW is working to address with a new experimental system. BMW engineers have built artificial intelligence into the system that tracks where each driver of the car goes and builds up a history profile. It then uses this learned history and the car's current track to predict where the driver might be going. Real time traffic data can then be compared to the prediction so that the driver can be warned of congestion, and alternate routes can be suggested to save fuel. Going beyond that, the system can potentially proactively modify the control strategies of the powertrain to reduce fuel use based on what the system expects to encounter. BMW has managed to improve the predictive accuracy from the initial 30 percent all the way to 70 percent in the current systems. BMW hasn't given any indications of when this technology might make it into production vehicles.
Now that President Obama had appointed the task force that will study the future of the auto industry in this country, its time for them to get to work. The team spent last week looking over the latest viability plans from General Motors and Chrysler. Today, Steven Rattner and Ron Bloom, advisers to the task force will come to Michigan where they will sit down with officials at both GM and Chrysler to discuss the plans and learn more about both company's future product directions. While they are at GM, they will also get a close up look at the Chevy Volt and its powertrain technology. Presumably, Chrysler will also be sharing what it has under the hoods and floors of its EVs and ER-EVs. Both companies will need further cash infusions in the next few weeks in order to keep paying the bills.
Click for high-res images One of the many vehicles that will be debuting at the Geneva Motor Show this week is an emergency rescue version of the BMW X3. The rescue version is based on the X3 xDrive 20d which is powered by a 177 hp version of BMW's 2.0L four cylinder diesel engine. Drive goes to the wheels through BMW's torque vectoring xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Even in this SUV body, the diesel returns 36.2 mpg (U.S.). As expected of a rescue vehicle, it's equipped with the usual array of equipment including lights, sirens and mountings for rescue equipment.
Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2009 MINI Cooper S Convertible The Federal Motor Transport Authority in Germany has declared BMW and MINI as the most fuel efficient premium brands available in that market. The agency has calculated fleet average fuel economy for all new cars registered in Germany during 2008 and BMW/MINI came out on top with an average of 39.9 mpg (U.S.) and CO 2 emissions of 158 g/km Those numbers are lower than the average for all German made vehicles, a number that stood at 165 g/km. Of course, that isn't necessarily a direct comparison since the MINIs are made in the UK and help pull up thecompany average while the German aggregate number also includes cars from Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and the VW Group. The German fleet average for BMW is considerably higher than its U.S. CAFE average for 2008 of 27.4 mpg, in part because more than half of the BMWs in Europe are diesel powered and BMW only started selling diesels here a few months ago. BMW also doesn't sell any of its four cylinder gasoline engines here or offer technologies like automatic start/stop yet. In the next few years the company will likely begin offering those technologies as well as new hybrids that will help its U.S. numbers. Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.
The California Air Resources Board this week approved $700,000 in grants for demonstration projects to evaluate clean air technology. Advanced Transit Dynamics, Eaton and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District will each receive over $200,000 for projects. Eaton will build a package delivery van using a hydraulic series hybrid system it has developed. Similar systems have also been developed and tested by several other companies. UPS has been running several series hybrid vans for more than two years. Advanced Transit Dynamics will show an active aerodynamic system installed on a class 8 tractor trailer designed to minimize drag. The Sacramento project will use digester gases to consume some of the emissions from a stationary engine fueled by biogas. Companies getting the grants must provide matching funds for at least half the cost of the project with at least 10 percent coming from the grant recipient.
Being BMW has its advantages. Just the other day, we heard news that Renault's future large cars were in trouble due to the prevailing winds in the automotive sector pushing new car buyers towards smaller, more fuel efficient cars. BMW, on the other hand, is set to launch at least one relatively large model in concept form at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show next month called the 5 Series Gran Turism. This vehicle is widely expected to spawn a future production model. Perhaps Strategy Number ONE has moved back a few places? Remember that BMW also owns the Rolls Royce and MINI brands, so the German automaker can stretch out into a wide range of market segments without diluting the hard-earned brand integrity of its own label. Small cars can be introduced under the MINI umbrella. Plus, there's rumors of another brand in the works to focus on even smaller city cars. On the opposite end of the spectrum, BMW can produce a line of Rolls Royce models that are just dripping with luxury, size, weight and, of course, high fuel consumption. Even that premium moniker is downsizing, though, with the new smaller, gentler RR4 expected to debut next month as well. For what it's worth, BMW claims that the new Roller will lead its segment in fuel economy and carbon emissions.
Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2009 Seat Ibiza Ecomotive The United States , the United Kingdom and France have already announced plans to stimulate the ailing automakers and suppliers that do business in their countries, so it's not too surprising to hear that Spain has joined in the ranks as well. Like those other bailout packages, the Spanish government is highlighting the need to invest in eco-friendly automotive technologies. According to data provided by the Spanish government, 350,000 people are employed in auto-related industries in Spain and 6 percent of the country's GDP is related to the automotive market. Last year, new car sales in Spain dropped by about 28 percent, which seems to be about the average slump worldwide. The European Union has requested additional information from Spain regarding the plan before it will sign off on the aid package. Some European countries have complained that France's plan amounts to illegal protectionism.
