Now that it’s been confirmed, the initial disbelief has turned into excited anticipation that the long-awaited fully electric Brammo Enertia will finally be available in May, and at 5 selected West Coast Best Buy locations to boot. Perhaps most interesting areCar Blog Green that CEO Craig Bramscher made about the future of the bike. “What we’re selling is a lot closer to consumer electronics than to transportation,” he said, suggesting that on-board cameras that can link up to the internet would be one likely add-on. Basic repairs and maintenance will be carried out by the Geek Squad crew while more intensive work would be performed at various service centers around the country. If this initial rollout proves successful, Bramscher envisions a time when the Enertia and its future siblings would be available at every Best Buy locations around the world. Renault kicks hybrids and hydrogen to the curb

While it’s sister company, Nissan , may still be chasing after hybrids and dreaming of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles ( HFCV) , reports say that Renault has had enough. It’s dropped the duo and has decided it wants to go steady with electric vehicles. Company COO Patrick Pelata has let it be known that all its research and development resources will be be strictly focused on battery-powered locomotion and that they hope to have a third of the Renault line-up electric in 10 years. In the near term, the French automaker will focus on three particular models equipped with batteries from NEC to give them all over 100 miles of range. They include an electric version of the Kangoo, a sedan to fulfill its Better Place commitment in Israel but also with European availability as well as a smaller 5-seat hatchback. Renault is also said to still be flirting with a battery lease and swap model. Honda factories get EPA Energy Star Awards

While a study came out a couple of years ago that compared the environmental impact of the Hummer H2 and the Toyota Prius has been repeatedly debunked , it did raise an important issue while it twisted and manipulated facts: it takes energy to produce and sell a new vehicle. A lot of energy. Over the last several years, all automakers have been working diligently to reduce the energy required in their manufacturing processes, both for environmental and cost reasons. With sales falling and energy costs rising, making plants more energy efficient is critical to financial survival. Honda has just earned 2008 Energy Star awards from the EPA for three of its plants in Marysville and East Liberty, Ohio and Lincoln, Alabama. The Ohio factories earned perfect scores of 100 on the evaluation. All three plants have implemented new control systems in the paint shops that have reduced energy consumption by 25 percent while maintaining the quality of the finishes. Other changes have included reprogramming machines to use less energy during down-time. Honda produces 77 percent of the vehicles sold in North America in plants in the United States and Canada, greatly reducing the transportation costs and energy consumption as well. Honda to build cellulosic ethanol research facility

One alternative fuel area where Japanese automakers have shown comparatively little interest, until recently, is biofuels. Toyota has announced plans to offer a flex-fuel version of the Tundra and Honda offers flex-fuel Civics in Brazil. Toyota also recently announced a cellulosic ethanol partnership . Honda has now announced plans to build a new R&D facility in Japan that will focus on producing biofuels from non-food feedstocks. The 1,050 m 2 lab is expected to be completed and operating by November of this year. Honda has been working with the Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth since 2006 and began operating an experimental production facility in 2007. So far, Honda hasn’t given any indication that it will offer any flex-fuel vehicles in the U.S. market. Perhaps now that Honda has backed off from its plans to offer diesels in the U.S. market and only plans to offer hybrids in small cars, we may start to see the company embrace ethanol.
