UPS deploys 300 CNG trucks in four states, now has 800 worldwide

UPS has announced the deployment of 300 new CNG-powered trucks in North America. The trucks have been deployed over the past month to Denver (43 units); Atlanta (46); Oklahoma City (100), and four cities in California: Sacramento (21), San Ramon (63), Los Angeles (9) and Ontario (18). This gives UPS a total of 800 vehicles across the company’s worldwide fleet that burn natural gas out of a total of 1,819 UPS vehicles that use alternative fuels. The alt-energy sources include CNG, liquefied natural gas, propane, electric and hybrid electric vehicles in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany (pictured), France, Brazil, Chile, Korea and the United Kingdom. These 300 vans were not converted vehicles but designed to be CNG-capable from the start. Greenlings: What is cellulosic ethanol and how does it fit with green cars?

Click above for high-res gallery of the ethanol Hummer There is a lot of controversy surrounding biofuels. Various studies have shown that crop-based biofuels contribute to global warming more than they help prevent it , that ethanol is no better than gasoline , and that South East Asian rainforests are suffering for biofuels, to name just three. The most dramatic recent claim was that ethanol was the worst type of renewable energy . Currently, popular fuel crops include sugar cane (in Brazil), sugar beets (Europe), and corn (United States). The good news is that you don’t need to grow crops for the express purpose of making them into ethanol to create the biofuel. You can also use beer byproducts or get help from sea grubs , among many other methods. When you use these non-crop alternative methods, the result is often called cellulosic ethanol. Since ethanol has all sorts of negative connotations, some suggest we rename the fuel. ” Celluline ” is one possibility, but for this post we’ll stick with cellulosic ethanol. Cellulosic ethanol is the main face of so-called second-generation biofuels. It’s called “cellulosic” because it is made from lignocellulose. Lignocellulose, in turn, is made up of lignin and cellulose that is present in the cell walls of woody plants. Follow us past the jump for an expanded primer on cellulosic ethanol and it’s place in green motoring today. 2008 Petroleum demand sinks to 2003 levels

Auto Blog: Etc. For the last several years, as the economies of countries like India, China and Brazil have boomed, projections of worldwide energy demand have indicated an increase of 70 percent over the next two decades. That demand curve hit a big speed bump in the United States in 2008 as prices for oil spiked, and were then followed by the global economy tanking in the second half of the year. Demand for petroleum products in particular had the biggest drop since 1980, falling six percent to just 19.4 million barrels a day. That’s the lowest demand in this country since 2003. Domestic oil production also hit its lowest level since 1946, as Gulf of Mexico supplies were disrupted by hurricanes and Alaskan production declined as well. Imports of both crude oil and finished products like gasoline also dropped by 2.2 and 10.6 percent respectively. This downward trend is likely to continue for at least the next year or two as global trade declines. Once the economy recovers, the upward trend will probably resume – at least for the next decade when alternatives (should) really start to take hold. Brazilian company Maxi-Eco to enter Auto X Prize

Auto Blog: Emerging Technologies , Ethanol , Flex-Fuel , Automotive X-Prize , South/Latin America When the Automotive X-Prize announced its competition, and especially the $10 million in prize money that goes along with it, we figured that plenty of small, relatively unknown companies would enter the proceedings. They have . The good news is that this is exactly the point of the event – to stimulate innovation in a rational, usable manner. Of course, some are more oddball than others, but we digress. One new competitor called Maxi-Eco appears to be coming by way of Brazil with a new flex-fuel axial engine design that it believes will handily outperform the 100 mile per gallon equivalent rating that the competition calls for. The firm had considered going the hybrid route, but has since decided that its patent pending engine technology will be fine without it. At this point, the engine resides in a Lotus 7 knockoff, but the team will enter the X-Prize competition with an undetermined production car chassis fitted with its unique powerplant. Thanks for the tip, Gustavo ! [Source: MotorTips ] Brazilian company Maxi-Eco to enter Auto X Prize originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Fri, 30 Jan 2009 20:01:00 EST.
