Remember EPIC? They’re now "Growth Energy" and they’ve got a chip on their shoulder
Auto Blog: Ethanol , AutoblogGreen Exclusive , Green Daily While looking around for information on EPIC’s now-canceled sponsorship of the Rahal-Letterman Racing Team , I discovered that the Ethanol Promotion and Information Council is undergoing a rebranding. The new name: “Growth Energy.” Growth Energy formed in early November 2008 and it seems their main goal is to separate the biofuel and food industries into good (biofuel) and bad (food) players. Take a look at this ad , which attacks “Big Food” for keeping prices high even though energy costs have dropped in the last six months, or this one , which says that “ethanol is a proven solution” and that “cellulosic ethanol is now a reality.” Growth Energy still needs to work on their terminology a bit. Back in mid-November, the group called on the food industry to “lower prices for consumers at the grocery store.” To illustrate how slow “Big Food” is in responding, Growth Energy has an elapsed timer clock that is currently up to almost 83 hours. What does Growth Energy call this timer? A “countdown clock.” Um, I’m pretty sure that countdown clocks count down , but maybe the ethanol industry just likes defining things in their own special way. [Source: Growth Energy ] Remember EPIC? Ethanol decline’s latest casualty: Rahal-Letterman racing team
Auto Blog: Ethanol , Racing During the keynote session of the Alternative Fuel and Vehicle Institute conference last May, Bobby Rahal, head of Rahal Letterman Racing , gave a talk that described his role (click and scroll down a bit) in helping the Indy Racing League move to using 100 percent ethanol fuel. In short, Rahal was fully behind the move to the biofuel. Turns out, ethanol isn’t fully behind Rahal. Reports came out late last week that the Ethanol Promotion and Information Council (EPIC, which is now apparently Growth Energy – more on that in a bit) will not sponsor the Rahal-Letterman Racing team for the 2009 season, potentially leaving the team out of the IRL entirely this year . Rahal is still hoping to find someone to pick up the pricey tab, though. How much does it cost? About six million dollars. That’s six million the ethanol industry apparently doesn’t have. Azure Dynamics shuttle bus finishes accelerated Altoona test cycle
Auto Blog: Hybrid An Azure Dynamics Balance hybrid shuttle bus based on a Ford E-450 chassis has completed an accelerated durability test that simulates seven years and 200,000 miles of duty. The test program was run at the Altoona, PA durability test facility. The Balance hybrid system is a parallel system that incorporates a drive motor inline with the drive shaft, battery pack and an integrated starter/generator to provide the start/stop capability. The system is paired up with the Ford 5.4L V8 in this cutaway van chassis that can be fitted with a variety of different body styles for different applications. Azure claims fuel efficiency improvements of up to 40 percent and a 30 percent cut in greenhouse gas emissions for its hybrid system. Azure claims the Balance shuttle, along with its series hybrid HD Senator CitiBus, are the only hybrid shuttles to have completed the testing. That makes these vehicles eligible for Federal Transit Authority grants that cover up to 80 percent of the cost when local transit system purchase these vehicles.
