British Touring Car Championship to begin testing CO2 emissions

Motorsports of all kinds are feeling the pressure to reduce their environmental footprint, and the British Touring Car Championship is no different. In an effort to demonstrate their commitment to green racing (a contradiction in terms?), the BTCC has started testing the race cars of its various contenders at Land Rover’s lab in Solihull to be sure that their carbon emissions are in line with the road cars on which they are based. Alan Gow, BTCC series director, says, “To my mind, it’s a far more meaningful demonstration of our credentials to motor manufacturers, environmental groups, sponsors, the government, motorists and the BTCC’s many millions of fans than us taking less convincing (or demanding) steps.” That may be true, but we should all remember that a vehicle’s carbon emissions are directly related to how much fuel it is burning. This being the case, cars that are being driven as hard as possible in an effort to win races are never really going to be environmentally friendly. Still, it’s an appreciated step in the right direction. Geneva 2009 = Honda Insight + ASIMO

Click above for more of ASIMO with the Honda Insight How do you emphasize that your new hybrid is perfect for robot drivers? By introducing it in Europe with the help of ASIMO. That was Honda’s strategy in Geneva recently when the new Insight Hybrid made its European debut. ASIMO, known for conducting orchestras and falling down stairs , was on stage with the leader of Honda Insight’s development team, Yasunari Seki, and posed for some pictures. ASIMO was then put to work doing 54 15-minute public performances over 13 days. For these shows, ASIMO showed off its “ability to run, climb stairs, give and receive objects and interact with people.” As long as it stays on its feet, I’m sure it is mighty impressive. Geneva 2009: Lotus touts efficiency of new 2010 Exige S

Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2010 Lotus Exige S “The same technology that makes a lightweight car a high performer also makes it efficient – how many cars have performance figures of 0 – 100 km/h in 4.77 secs but produce only 199 g/km CO2?” That question was posed by Mike Kimberley, Chief Executive of Group Lotus plc, and he’s got a point. As part of its ongoing quest to shave weight, Lotus has blessed us with what are undoubtedly the most efficient fossil fuel-burning sportscars the world has ever seen. Of course, Lotus vehicles have also proven rather adept at accepting EV conversions for this same reason. For the 2010 model year, Lotus has upped the ante yet again by incrementally improving the aerodynamics of its Exige S, nudging up the fuel efficiency and lowering the carbon emissions in the process. A revised fascia lets more air in to cool the radiator and twin oil coolers and a new rear wing reduces drag and still puts down 42 kilograms (93 pounds) of downforce at 160 km/h (about 100 mph). Add it all up, and the new Exige S emits 199 g/km CO 2 and achieves European Combined Cycle ratings of 8.5 litres/100 km (33.2 mpg). Car Blog Greenthe full press release after the break. Fox’s 24 to go carbon neutral

We haven’t ever seen any specific statistics outlining the carbon emissions from car crash and car chase sequences filmed for movies or television, but it can’t be good. In our current environmentally-aware global climate, movie and television studios must realize that their actions will be scrutinized, so it’s not surprising to see a growing number of productions making attempts to offset their carbon emissions. Shortly after hearing that Eric Bana’s new flick Love the Beast would be going carbon neutral , news comes in that Fox will be offsetting the carbon emissions from the popular television show 24 . To lessen the environmental load further, cast and crew members have switched to hybrid shuttle vehicles, trucks used by Fox will use a 20 percent biodiesel blend, motion sensors will turn lights on and off and clean energy credits will be purchased from wind farms in India. Stars like Kiefer Sutherland will record public service announcements urging fans of the show to lessen their own environmental impact. Why 24 ? According to Howard Gordon, executive producer of the show, “We are arguably the worst possible offender, which is why, in a way, it made sense to start with us. If we can do it, anyone can.” [Source: NY Times ] Auto Blog: Carbon Offset , Green Daily Fox’s 24 to go carbon neutral originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 03 Mar 2009 16:55:00 EST. Eric Bana offsets carbon emissions of new film, "Love the Beast"

Regardless of your view on global climate change, you must admit that the issue of carbon emissions has become a hot topic over these last few years, and automobiles have taken the brunt of the criticism. Celebrities often seem to be leading the low-emissions charge, or they at least like to appear that way by driving fuel sippers like the Toyota Prius or sometimes the fully electric Tesla Roadster . Not this time. Eric Bana, star of box office productions like Hulk and Troy , is apparently quite the gearhead, and he’s also concerned enough with the environment to offset all the carbon emissions of his upcoming new flick, Love The Beast . The title character of the new movie is an Australian Ford Falcon coupe from 1973 – hardly a bastion of clean motoring – that was modified to take part in the Targa Tasmanian Rally. Bana’s production company hired a team of specialists to calculate the carbon emissions spent by the crew in the making of the film, and the appropriate number of trees will be planted to equal it all out. Michigan man believes his flying saucer is the answer

Auto Blog: Etc. , Green Daily Could your next mode of transportation be on a flying saucer ? It all depends on who you ask. Direct that question towards Alfie Carrington of Clinton Township, Michigan, and you’ll get a resounding “yes.” Carrington, a construction worker by day, hopes that the UFO he’s been building in his garage qualifies him to receive $250,000 from the Feds as part of the much larger auto bailout program. A small price to pay to ween ourselves from petroleum use, right? We’d bet against him, but stranger things have happened. What would the money be used for? To create the flying saucer’s powertrain, which would reportedy use spinning discs that produce an unlimited supply of electricity that would be fed to batteries. A set of air ducts would be used to control the carbon fiber frisbee’s flight path. That’s rather vague, admittedly, but perpetual power sounds perfect for a flying saucer to us. Bank robber uses Prius to make a clean getaway

Filed under: Etc. , Hybrid , Toyota , USA It seems the arrow that is the message of personal environmental responsibility may have now pierced through every strata of society. What brings us to this conclusion is the news that a Prius was recently chosen as a getaway vehicle by a bank robber. It did occur to us that he might have chosen the halo car because of its ability to be somewhat stealthy while in electric-only mode rather than concern about his carbon footprint. Some of you may even be thinking that the real reason for choosing the Toyota hybrid for making good his escape was the fact that there was one idling nearby with its owner standing beside it, unaware of the unfolding drama about to overtake him. While we admit that is also a possibility, we prefer to think better of our fellow man. He did, after all, commit the robbery without brandishing a weapon or uttering threats of harm. For all anyone knows the fruits of his “labor” may have been thereafter donated to an orphanage. Or animal shelter. Or something. Whatever the man’s motivation, the fact remains that, according to reports, he made, ahem, a clean getaway. Detroit 2009: Audi introduces 39 mpg Sportback concept [w/VIDEO]

Filed under: Diesel , Audi , Detroit Auto Show click the Sportback concept for a high res gallery of what to expect from the A7 Audi took the wraps off a new concept in Detroit that presages the upcoming A7 coupe/sedan that will be joining the lineup in the next year or so. The Sportback concept is a low slung four door in the manner of cars like the Mercedes CLS and is sized similarly to the existing A6 sedan. Besides the updated Audi styling that includes LED lighting everywhere, the concept is powered by 3.0L V6 TDI diesel. This is the same engine going into the Q7 TDI that will be appearing in US Audi showrooms in the next few weeks. The concept pairs the TDI V6 with the same 7-speed S-Tronic dual clutch transmission used in the new S4 sedan as well as an automatic start-stop system. Even in this fairly large car, the powertrain delivers a combined 39 mpg and CO 2 emissions of just 156 g/km.
