CARB chair calls all this hydrogen/battery fighting "madness"

While the California Air Resources Board has certainly played a huge role in putting cleaner vehicles on the road over the years, some plug-in vehicle advocates have a bone to pick with Chairman Mary Nichols (pictured here during the 2007 Alt Car Expo ). During the recent UC Berkeley Energy Symposium, Nichols said she had a problem with plug-in proponents as well. Well, not just with them, but with advocates who push one type of technology and have no room in their green motoring vision for another. Specifically, Nichols said that: “There is one thing that has really frustrated me in the last couple of years…it has been the ideological, I would almost say theological, debate between the people who think that hydrogen fuel cells are the answer and the people who think that only battery electric vehicles are the answer. Each of them do their best to trash the credibility, viability and good faith of the other side. … From the point of view of a regulator, this is madness.” Car Blog Greenmore of Nichols’ statement, and why she is certain that we need both technologies, over at Green Car Congress [Source: Green Car Congress ] Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Hydrogen , Green Daily CARB chair calls all this hydrogen/battery fighting “madness” originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sat, 28 Feb 2009 20:05:00 EST. Bob Lutz to retire at the end of 2009

Auto Blog: GM Automotive journalists the world over are saddened and General Motors communications staff are breathing a sigh of relief today: Bob Lutz is retiring. For journalists, the loss of perhaps the most quotable executive since Hank the Duece means they will have to dig a little harder for stories. For the PR staff, it means a little less scrambling to spin the story whenever Lutz goes off script. Lutz has been Vice Chairman for Global Product Development at GM since 2001. Over his 45-year automotive career, Lutz has worked at Opel, BMW, Ford and Chrysler as well as a stint running Exide batteries. During his current stint at General Motors, Lutz has been a vocal champion for the newest generation of products ranging from the Cadillac CTS to the Chevrolet Volt . Lutz has also made himself a target as one of the executives behind the decision to kill the EV1 and hisCar Blog Green about man-made global warming being “a crock of …” As of April 1, Lutz will move to a senior advisor role and Tom Stephens will move over running global powertrain operations to overseeing all of product development. Lutz will officially leave GM at the end of the year. Thanks to everyone who sent this in. Doctor’s Lexus hybrid explodes in Arkansas, "explosive device" found

Auto Blog: Etc. , Hybrid , Lexus This is one of those stories that, when you first Car Blog Greenthe headline, you think, “This will be all over the internet in a matter of minutes.” The details are as follows: A Lexus hybrid belonging to the chairman of the Arkansas Medical Board, Dr. Trent Pierce, exploded this morning outside his home. CNN says he is currently in “extremely critical condition” at a local hospital. Early reports from local media said that, “it could have been a malfunction with the hybrid Lexus SUV” and police did not initially suspect any foul play. Another person was also injured. FOX has since learned that the ATF is investigating and that an “explosive device” was found in the car. The FBI is also involved. Toyota has told AutoblogGreen that, “At this time we have received no information on the details of the onsite investigation.” UPDATE : Toyota just sent out the following statement: “We are extremely concerned to hear about Dr. Pierce and are looking into the situation. There have been conflicting reports from officials on the scene and it is too early to speculate on the cause. We will cooperate completely with officials in any investigation. We are not aware of any such incident in which it was determined that Lexus hybrid vehicle components were the cause.” [Source: CNN , FOX ] Doctor’s Lexus hybrid explodes in Arkansas, “explosive device” found originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 04 Feb 2009 13:29:00 EST. Th!nk saved by outside investors Ener1

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , European Union , Th!nk (Think) Click above for a gallery of the Th!nk City Th!nk’s not dead yet, though it might still officially be on life support. As expected , an outside group of investors has stepped up to the plate and bailed out the Norwegian electric car company with a bridge loan of 40 million crowns ($5.69 million). The largest bit of funding comes courtesy of Ener1 Group Inc. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because they’re the private equity firm that owns 57% of Ener1, which, in turn, is the maker of battery packs that are being used in the Th!nk City. This figure is short of the 100-200 million crowns that Th!nk’s administration said may be necessary for continued operation, but Th!nk’s Richard Canny says it gives them time to get final funding in place and to begin working back up to regular production. Ener1 Chairman and CEO Charles Gassenheimer told AutoblogGreen that, “Ener1 Group has been very interested in furthering its investments in Electric Drive, so this fits within our investment paradigm. The financial distress in December took all of us by surprise, so this is just a short term solution. This will give us until March to complete the larger round. This funding round will allow Think to start ramping up production as early as February, with an eye to getting back into full volume production by April.” Thanks to everyone who tipped this !
