Welcome to Geneva! Meet the 2010 Chevrolet Spark! 47 mpg (U.S.)!
Click image above for a high-res gallery of the 2010 Chevy Spark The Autoblog/AutoblogGreen team is just rolling into Geneva this morning for one of the biggest auto shows of the year, and look what we found before we even got out of the airport: Sitting in the Chevrolet media lounge right by the train station is the brand-new Chevrolet Spark. Essentially a four door version of the Beat concept we saw two years ago in New York, the Spark will be launching in other parts of the world in early 2010 and in the U.S. a year later. Both the 1.0-liter and 1.2-liter engines are expected to top 47 miles-per-gallon (U.S.) combined and emit less than 120 g/km of CO 2 . They wouldn’t let us sit in the car yet but it looks surprisingly roomy at this first look. Hopefully, General Motors will be around long enough that we’ll get to drive it. Chevy Volt wins environmental prize at Festival Automobile International
A jury at the Festival International Automobile has selected the Chevrolet Volt for the 2009 Environmental Grand Prize. The jury at the French festival is comprised of artists, media and auto industry representatives and selected winners in multiple categories including the new Alfa Romeo MiTo mini car which chosen as the most beautiful car of 2008. The festival this year looked at the car in light of the current economic environment and festival president Remi Depoix said “Designers, engineers and marketing people in the automotive business will have to come up with new valid responses to this new paradox: to conceive an automobile answering new expectations and new requirements without compromising on charm.” Whether or not the Volt meets that no-compromises charm target is still debatable, but it certainly has the potential to break new ground in the technical department. The real question will be whether it can succeed on a commercial level whether the economy turns around or not. Only time will tell the answer to that question. Writing on the wall: GM shutters high-performance vehicle division
How does GM prove to the U.S. government that it can be a viable company again? By ditching high-performance vehicles. In the Viability Plan/$16.6 billion request submitted to Congress this week, GM said it would focus on eco-friendly cars and hyped up the Volt in many ways. The flipside of this is that GM’s High Performance Vehicle Operations team was disbanded. That means that development of cars like the low-volume Chevrolet Cobalt SS (above), the HHR SS and the V-series Caddies have been stopped. Engineers from the HPVO will move to other products in the Cadillac, Buick, Chevrolet and Pontiac lineup. Maybe, GM says, if GM gets back on its feet, the HPVO unit might be pulled back together. Let’s hope that if it does, the meaning of “performance” will equal green, not just fast. GM files restructuring plan, includes eco-friendly cars, asks for up to $16.6 billion more money
Click above for a high res gallery of the 2011 Chevy Volt Shortly after Chrysler submitted its updated restructuring plan to Congress, General Motors followed suit with its own document that is supposed to detail a return to sustainable profitability within the next 24 months. As you’d expect, fuel efficiency plays a major part of GM’s future goals, with the automaker saying that “All major introductions in 2009-2014 are high-mileage cars and crossovers.” Moving forward, GM will focus on Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac, with Pontiac serving as a “niche product” and Saab and HUMMER leaving the fold entirely. As far as future product is concerned, the Chevy Volt figures prominently in GM’s plans and is slated for a 2010 release. By 2014, GM says its cars will average 38.6 miles per gallon and its trucks will average 27.6 mpg, improvements of 7.6 and 3.6 mpg respectively. Like Chrysler, GM promises to comply with federal fuel economy mandates but makes no mention of California’s request for its own emissions standards. None of this matters at all if GM isn’t able to keep its factories humming, and GM says that an additional $16.6 billion in loans will be necessary to ensure survival, bringing the total amount of requested as a revolving line of credit to $30 billion. We’ve pasted the full press release after the break, but there’s plenty more in the official and highly detailed 117-page document, which can be downloaded in its entirety as a PDF file here . GM racing manager proud to be building a greener Corvette
Auto Blog: Ethanol , Chevrolet , Lightweight , Racing Click the GT1 Corvette C6R for a high res gallery from the 2008 Detroit Sports Car Challenge Last year, at the same press conference where American Le Mans Series CEO Scott Atherton announced the Green Challenge , Chevrolet general manager Ed Peper announced that the C6R Corvettes would be running on cellulosic ethanol in the GT1 class. After a year of tearing up the tracks powered by non-food-sourced biofuel, GM Road Racing Group Manager Steve Wesoloski is proud of the team’s accomplishments. He also welcomes Michelin on board as the title sponsor of the Green Challenge for 2009 . Ethanol obviously remains a controversial fuel, but Wesoloski said, “It’s going to be a long time before the auto industry finds the one magic solution. In the meantime we’re all looking for answers. This [cellulosic E85] is one. We’re saying you don’t have to be afraid of ethanol.” Lessons learned converting the race car to E85 are being shared with the production side at GM. Now, with a GT2 car under development for its debut later this year, the team is working on weight reduction by using the aluminum chassis of the production Z06 and ZR1 models. Hopefully, some of those weight reduction lessons will also make their way to production GM cars. Gallery: Detroit Sports Car Challenge 08 Photos Copyright (C)2008 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc. German auto club gets HydroGen4 from GM for roadside assistance
Auto Blog: Hydrogen , GM , Germany One of General Motors’ HydroGen4 (aka fuel cell Equinox) vehicles is now prowling the streets in Berlin and Brandenberg, Germany offering up roadside assistance. The German auto club ADAC is operating one of the fuel cell-powered crossovers as part of GM’s Project Driveway. Just as AAA crews do here in the U.S., ADAC (the “Yellow Angels”) come to the rescue of motorists with flat tires, empty fuel tanks or otherwise inoperative vehicles. This will be a particularly demanding assignment for the fuel cell vehicle since it will be operating most of the day, every day. Unlike most of the other Equinoxes being driven by ordinary people in daily use, the ADAC car is equipped with telemetry equipment to transmit data back to the Opel engineers overseeing the European segment of the program. Following ADAC, several other corporate partners are also getting these vehicles for testing. GM Lordstown assembly likely to go down to a single shift
Auto Blog: Manufacturing/Plants , Chevrolet , GM After a sales spike for the Chevy Cobalt last spring that saw General Motors add a third shift to its Lordstown, OH assembly plant in an attempt to keep up with demand, the plant is now set to drop to a single shift. The sales meltdown that came in the fall caused GM to first slow down the line rate and then cut the third shift late in the year. With no improvement in sales expected anytime soon, the layoff notices for the second shift will likely come soon and be effective in April. The plant has already been on extended shutdown for all of January and inventories remain high. The bad economy is hammering sales in every segment right now. Later this year the plant will be re-tooled to start building the new Chevy Cruze next spring. GM Leaks News of Volt-Style Cadillac
Several sources inside General Motors told BusinessWeek auto writer David Kiley that the company will show a Cadillac two-door plug-in series hybrid at next week’s Detroit Auto Show. According to Kiley, the concept vehicle—a new model similar to the CTS sedan although “smaller” and “bolder”—suggests that the company plans to use electric-drive technology, to be utilized in the upcoming Chevrolet Volt, in other vehicles. Detail of Cadillac CTS Kiley writes, “One GM executive says the Caddy’s drop-dead dramatic styling will make “‘people want it regardless of the energy source.’” Kiley’s report is a leak of what might have been one of the biggest surprises of the Detroit Auto Show. GM’s Chevy Volt , a plug-in series hybrid or range-extended electric car, made a big splash at the Detroit Auto Show two years ago, but this year’s show will be dominated by new hybrid and plug-in cars from Honda, Toyota, Ford, Mercedes, Chrysler, and Chinese automaker BYD. The Cadillac concept could bring much-needed attention to the General Motors booth. General Motors is still approximately two years away from releasing the Chevy Volt, which is due in November 2010. GM’s plans to introduce the Volt, and to introduce any other hybrid or electric vehicles, occur as GM is “reeling from billions in losses and needs government loans to stay afloat,” according to Kiley. read more
