Toyota corrects Prius mpg rating to 51 city/48 highway/50 combined
Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2010 Toyota Prius In our Prius info overload post from last week, we highlighted the official (though preliminary) mileage rating for the 2010 model, which Toyota had told us would be 50 mpg city, 49 mpg highway (they’d already revealed the 50 mpg combined number in Detroit). We just got an email from Toyota saying that a “misinterpretation of preliminary data” meant that “the EPA fuel economy numbers we gave you were slightly incorrect.” The combined rating remains at 50 mpg. This is an important number for all the advertisements we’ll be seeing shortly, I’m sure. The other two numbers, though, were incorrect. Today, Toyota PR told us that: While the combined rating of 50 mpg remains unchanged, the city rating went up one mpg and the highway number went down one mpg. Therefore the revised preliminary EPA fuel economy ratings for the new Prius are 51 city/48 highway/50 combined. There you have it. A deal-breaker? Certainly not. A minor (very minor) disappointment? For some, probably. Ford Transit Connect EPA numbers come in above expectations, 22/25 mpg
Click the Transit Connect for a high res gallery When Ford announced a couple of weeks ago that it was ready to start selling the compact Transit Connect van in the U.S. the final EPA mileage numbers were not yet available. At the time the company estimated that the TC would be rated at 20 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway. The Feds have now finished crunching the test data and the TC came in a bit better, now scoring 22 mpg around town and 25 on the open road. The Transit Connect will be on sale at Ford dealers this summer starting at $21,475, including destination. Jetta TDI spotted doing taxi service in New York City
An alert reader in Manhattan recently noticed an unusual new vehicle decked in the yellow paint scheme of a New York cab. This is the first known example of a Volkswagen Jetta TDI doing livery service in the Big Apple. Much has been made of the city’s taxi and limousine commission requiring new cab vehicles to get a minimum of 25 mpg and the assumption that this would mean hybrids only. In fact most of the vehicles approved for use in the city are hybrids, with the exception of the old Ford Crown Victoria, wheel chair accessible vans and the diesel Jetta. It’s not known how many Jettas are operating in Gotham right now but there is at least this one. Thanks to Nate for the tip! San Francisco puts electric car charger in front of City Hall, ZipCar gets its frist PHEV
The city of San Francisco took another step into electric vehicle territory by installing “Smartlet” electric vehicle charging stations outside of City Hall today. The Smartlets are on loan from Coulomb Technologies and will be used to charge up cars from ZipCar, City CarShare and “a plug-in car in the City of San Francisco municipal fleet.” Mayor Gavin Newsom made the announcement this morning. Mayor Newsom, one of the few to actually own an EV1 back in the day, also wrote a post for Gas2 in which he says that he believes battery electric vehicles – not hybrids and he did not mention hydrogen – “are the quantum leap we need to make.” One thing about this caught my eye. A ZipCar with a plug? Huh? The San Francisco ZipCar site doesn’t list any vehicles that can get juice from the grid, so I called the San Francisco ZipCar office. They told me that they have just one plug-in model, specifically designated for city hall, which is a converted PHEV Prius. Thanks to Natasha M. for the tip! NYPD goes green with Nissan Altima Hybrids
According to the New York Post , the New York Police Department will soon begin a pilot program that would replace 40 of the city’s police cruisers with Nissan Altima Hybrids . The initial investment in the gas-saving and pollution-reducing scheme is a hefty $1.1 million. As it stands, 18 units have been set up as fully marked patrol cars and 20 as unmarked cars. Two more are playing spy games disguised as yellow taxicabs. If these cars work out well as police units, plenty of fuel will be saved. The current fleet, which consists mainly of large, rear-wheel drive, full frame Crown Vics and slightly smaller Impalas, averages between 16 and 18 mpg in the city. The Altimas are expected to get 35 mpg. Given the shaky state of the U.S. domestic car industry, we wonder what kind of backlash there might be for using the Japanese cars, though they are assembled in Smyrna, TN. We know that police officers have proven an attachment to the old-tech cruisers that they currently use, and we’d be a little surprised if Ford isn’t at least considering outfitting its new Fusion Hybrid for crime fighting. Thanks for the tip, Mike ! Geneva Preview: Details on Rinspeed iChange concept filter out
Click above for a high-res gallery of the Rinspeed iChange Last month, we learned that Rinspeed would be debuting another of its crazy concept vehicles at the Geneva Motor Show , now a few more details about the Swiss-designed vehicle, along with a ton of new images, are making the rounds. Concept cars from Rinspeed are always a bit wacky, and this one doesn’t disappoint with a body that shape-shifts in order to seat the required number of occupants (up to 3) so that it’s always as aerodynamically adept as possible. Besides the real-life Transformer shell, the iChange concept features a fully electric drivetrain, including a 150-kilowatt (204 horsepower) motor that’s hooked up to a six-speed gearbox cribbed from a Subaru WRX. There are two different lithium ion battery options (one each for short-range or long-range driving) that can offer enough juice to accelerate to 60 miles per hour in about 4 seconds. Top speed is listed at 137 mph. Other eco-friendly features include a navigation system that tailors the route for fuel savings, spun wool interior and roof-mounted solar panels that help charge the batteries on sunny days. Lastly, a heater that runs on electricity for short trips and E85 liquid fuel for long trips has been fitted for climate control. See the comically long press release after the break. Mercedes-Benz S400 BlueHybrid arriving in the U.S. this summer
Click the S400 for a high res gallery At last week’s Chicago Auto Show Mercedes-Benz quietly announced the impending arrival of its first volume production hybrid, the S400 BlueHybrid. The S400 goes on sale this summer with the new mild hybrid system co-developed by Daimler and BMW. Unlike the Two-Mode hybrid that will go into the ML450 later this year, the S400 used a 20 hp disk shaped motor, sandwiched between the engine and transmission. In typical fashion, the system provides auto-start-stop, electric assist, and regenerative braking capabilities. The entire vehicle’s electrical components are now driven off the lithium ion battery pack that is part of the system. The hybrid motor actually supplants the conventional alternator, which should make the system both more efficient and lighter, but also quieter by eliminating another belt driven component hanging off the engine block. With the 305 hp 3.5L V6 and 7-speed automatic transmission the S400 is rated at 29.8 mpg (U.S.) on the EU combined driving cycle. Official EPA numbers won’t be available until closer to the on-sale date. Fiat 500 Convertible revealed!
After a brief tease , the convertible version of the retro-cute Fiat 500 has been revealed before its official upcoming Geneva Motor Show debut. Taking a cue from the Cinquecento of yore , the canvas top slides back to open up a view of the sky yet leaves the outer portion of the roof intact, helping maintain body rigidity. Although the design does appear to limit rearward visibility somewhat, the boot gets to maintain its top-up storage capacity. When it reaches showroom floors in Europe this Spring, buyers will have the same engine choice as the hardtop; a turbo diesel or two tiny gas sippers. It will also keep the ” start&stop ” system that helps it get 40-some mpg in the city. It is not known for sure if the 500C will make it to America but if it does (and the roof doesn’t leak), it is likely to garner a huge following. Full press release after the break. Yamaha Japan introduces three electric bikes: $1,200 for a 42 mile range
Yamaha. I hear the name and hope the news is about zippy electric scooters. The truth is, though, that the Japanese manufacturer also builds bicycles, and some of these bicycles have electric motors to assist the person pushing the pedals. This month, the company is releasing three new models, each using 25V / 4 Ah Lithium batteries: the PAS Lithium S (pictured above), the PAS CITY-S and the PAS CITY-F. Priced at $1,200 in Japan, the only difference between the three models is their wheel sizes and trim details. The bikes offer less-stressed-out riders three different ranges, depending on riding style: 21 km (14 miles) in power mode, 39 km (24 mi) in standard mode or up to 67 km (42 mi) in eco mode. Cadillac Escalade Hybrid
Let’s be clear: the 2009 Cadillac Escalade 4WD Hybrid is 17 feet long, weighs almost 3 tons, costs $73,000, and gets about 20 miles per gallon. That’s not what most people think of when they hear “hybrid.” But this is the hybrid for you if you need a vehicle that can tow 5,800 pounds, seat 7 people, and still maximize your mileage. It boasts fuel economy of 20 city / 21 highway; those aren’t Toyota Prius numbers, for sure, but the city mileage is 50 percent better than a non-hybrid Escalade. You also get far more luxury than in the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid (and its twin the GMC Yukon Hybrid ); all three are essentially the same vehicle, underneath various levels of fancy dress. After an afternoon of fairly aggressive driving, the Cadillac Escalade Hybrid’s dashboard mpg display told the story: 16.3 mpg. (Photos: John Voelcker. All rights reserved.) Positioning Launched in August 2008, the Escalade Hybrid is unquestionably the world’s blingiest hybrid. GM’s characteristic hybrid-logo-with-green-leaf is rendered in large, garish chrome letters in a fender vent the size of your fist—which sits at chest level to a standard-issue human being. And some of its customers bask in the bling. One is Santonio Holmes, the 2009 Super Bowl’s Most Valuable Player, who was awarded an Escalade Hybrid 2WD Platinum Edition . GM didn’t publicize the award —bad form during the bailouts—but he got the top-of-the-line model. The Platinum Edition denotes unique front styling, LED headlights, four DVD screens, and more, and runs you $85,000. read more
