Over the next few years, Renault is planning a complete revamp of its powertrain lineup in an effort to cut CO 2 emissions. The updates will affect both gas and diesel engines, transmissions as well as advancing electric drive systems. Renault wants to be number one when it comes to low and zero emissions vehicles and the downsizing of internal combustion engines will be a big part of that. By adding turbocharging, Renault will replace current 1.2-1.6L gas engines with new 0.9-1.2L three and four cylinder engines ranging from 90-115 hp. This new modular TCe engine family will join the 1.2L TCe that was introduced in the Clio last year and cut CO 2 emissions by 30-40 g/km. New 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0L diesel engines will also improve efficiency, meet new EURO VI emissions standards and cut CO 2 by 20-25 g/km compared to existing units. Starting sometime in the next year, Renault will also replace existing automatic transmissions with new dual-clutch units that are lighter and more efficient. Also high on the list are electric drive systems which Renault calls “an inevitable answer.” Renault is working with alliance partner Nissan and its battery joint venture Automotive Electric Supply Corp (AESC) to try and make affordable, durable electric cars a reality.
