Argentina motorbike manufacturer launches CNG bike
Argentina’s most important motorbike manufacturer, Zanella, has announced its first factory-installed CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) powered bike. The bike, which is a converted RX150 model, has 150 cc displacement and the conversion adds two tanks of gas for a range of approximately 200 kilometers (120 miles). The tanks can store 1.4 m 3 of natural gas and are located in the same place as the fuel tank. Interestingly, a small reservoir that holds 3.5 liters of gasoline remains on board for emergencies. The CNG option costs 1,000 pesos (about $285) and the conversion kit is supplied by local manufacturer Ecopos, based in Santa Fe, Argentina. Obama’s signature on Stimulus Bill earns praise
Click above for an interactive timeline As we noted over the weekend, the Stimulus Bill that moved through Congress contains a lot of help for plug-in vehicles. As you might expect, the advocacy group Plug In America is quite pleased that President Obama signed the bill today (see full statement after the jump). While there is PHEV love in the bill – including $2 billion for advanced battery technologies – hard-hit PHEV-hopeful cities like Flint, Michigan don’t necessarily see a lot of help now that the Chevy Volt’s future in the city is uncertain. In fact, aside from a tax credit worth up $2,500 to for pure electric low-speed vehicles, cleaner vehicles (i.e., hybrids) available on the lot today don’t get a lot of help. HybridCars says that plug-in hybrid conversions can qualify for a tax credit of up to 10 percent of the cost of the conversion, if it’s done by an authorized firm before the end of 2011. The bill also allows people who earn less than $125,000 individually, or $250,000 jointly, to deduct the sales tax on a new car. Quite a bit there, but is it enough? What’s your take? eBay find of the day: Hymotion Plug-in Prius
Click above for high-res image gallery of the Hymotion Prius The current bid for the plug-in Prius you see above is $21,100, but the pesky reserve price has not yet been met. Considering the $10,000 price tag for the Hymotion plug-in conversion kit that this vehicle sports, someone might be able to get a really good deal on a PHEV, especially considering that this Prius is pretty loaded, with a leather trimmed interior, a navigation system and a backup camera. This 2007 Prius only has 14,800 miles on it and the warranty on the Hymotion pack that lasts for another 35 months (until January 2012). The seller is Green Motors and, according to a sticker on the battery pack , the conversion was done last month by our friends over at Green Gears . The car was in an front end collision, but, to give bidders some piece of mind, Green Motors is offering test drives to anyone who can get out to Berkeley before the auction ends in four days. Thanks to Paul G. for the tip! DC Auto Show: Destiny 2000 used to be a Fiero, now it’s a solar electric
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Solar , AutoblogGreen Exclusive , Green Daily , Washington DC Auto Show There is section of the DC Auto Show, called the Green Car Pavilion, that is intended to highlight alternative fuel vehicles. Before the show officially opens tomorrow, we managed to take a walk around the GCP and saw an interesting collection of vehicles parked there. One was the bright yellow ride that you see here: a 1985 Pontiac Fiero (well, so said the info sheet taped to the car, EV Album says it’s a 1986, see more details after the jump). A long time ago, certainly before the recent uptick in home electric car conversions, its gasoline guts were ripped out – professionally, of course, by Solar Electric Engineering of Santa Rosa, California – and replaced with 18 6-volt Trojan R-125 lead acid batteries and a series wound GE motor. With the conversion came a name change: from Fiero to Destiny 2000. Today, the Destiny 2000 can go 50 miles on a charge, has a top speed of 75 mph and a 0-60 time of 11.2 seconds. There was no one around to learn a bit more about the car, so in lieu of actual information, let’s imagine the fun one could have in a Fiero EV.
