Geneva preview: smart limited edition three
Click above for a gallery of the edition limited three The original smart car was designed to be easily customizable, to give each owner a car that looked just how they wanted it to look. But, why bother with your own Batmobile wings when Daimler is constantly churning out new variations of the fortwo model? The latest version is the “edition limited three,” which will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in short order. The idea behind the edition limited three is to make eco driving a bit more chic (well, as chic as a fortwo gets). The green metallic paint and 15 inch alloy wheels on the outside work with the brown and leather interior for something Daimler says is both spring-like and fresh. The trim level is close to the “passion” version of the non-limited smart fortwo and you can get the edition limited three in either coupé or cabriolet styles. Green credentials come from the standard micro-hybrid (mhd) start and stop system that reduces fuel consumption by about eight percent compared to a fortwo without mhd. CO 2 emissions are a solid 104 grams/km with the €15,470 coupé and 106 for the €18,510 cabrio. Family takes "The Electric Vehicle Initiative" on the road in Florida
A Tallahassee family is so excited about driving on electricity that they have hit the road in their plug-in Prius for a planned 2,000-mile road trip to share their enthusiasm and inform their fellow Floridians about the benefits of hybrids and electric cars. The Electric Vehicle Initiative, as they’re calling it, kicked off at last weekend’s Battery Beach Burnout in Jupiter and is scheduled to roll along until the end of March, stopping in every major city in the Sunshine State as well as many towns. Their car is a 2005 Prius which was converted to a plug-in last year and, unlike some others , say they can get 100 mpg with it. At least for the first freshly-juiced 40 miles. Yesterday had them appearing at the Palm Beach Community College, where they talked with students and had a screening of ” Who Killed the Electric Car .” If you would like them to stop by your town or if you just want to offer some encouragement, hit them up on their blog . We wish them happy motoring and hope they enjoy a successful trip. Strong early sales in Japan prompt Honda to increase Insight production
Click above for high-res gallery of the 2010 Honda Insight Since Honda started taking orders for the new Insight in Japan earlier this month, dealers have tripled the original sales target. As a result, the company has decided to crank up production starting in April to meet the demand for the new hybrid. Honda had been projecting world-wide Insight sales of 200,000 a year with 100,000 going to the U.S. and Canada. It remains to be seen how strong U.S. demand will be, especially with a new Prius arriving shortly after the Insight. The Insight’s price should undercut the Prius by several thousand dollars, although it’s also a considerably smaller car than the Toyota. In addition to price, the Insight’s Fit-based chassis should also have an advantage in driving dynamics, which may appeal to some drivers more. The Insight goes on sale in the United States on April 22. Related: ABG First Drive: 2010 Honda Insight, 63.4 mpg! Daimler only planning to use Tesla batteries for first 1,000 smart eds
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Tesla Motors , Daimler Click above for a high-res gallery of the smart ed When Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk told us yesterday that his company would be supplying battery packs and chargers for the first 1,000 second generation electric Smarts he expressed hope that the deal might be expanded beyond that. He told us that if the test program went well, he would like to supply packs and other components on an ongoing basis to Daimler. That may still happen, but the odds are likely against it. For one thing, most of Daimler’s production is in Europe and Tesla packs are assembled in California, making the logistics of overseas shipping expensive. The bigger problem is Daimler’s desire to keep battery technology in-house. This is not unique to Daimler; Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, and Nissan all have joint ventures for lithium ion batteries. At the Detroit Auto Show this week, GM announced that it will assemble the packs for it’s ER-EVs in its own factory with its own battery management systems. Matthias Brock, Head of Media Relations for Daimler’s Research, Development and Environmental Communications told Green Car Congress that the Tesla deal, “helps us to bridge the time until the industrialization of Lithium-Ion batteries within our Joint Venture with Evonik will be ready.” That JV was announced in December. Toyota to sell batteries to other automakers
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Toyota Click above for a gallery of the Toyota FT-EV concept Part of Tesla Motors’ ongoing business plan involves selling complete lithium ion battery packs to other auto manufacturers. The most recent example of this strategy was just announced at the Detroit Auto Show , with Tesla supplying packs to Daimler for its smart ed . Daimler, for its part, also wants to sell battery packs to its competitors. Joining these two manufacturers may soon be Toyota, as Executive Vice President Masatami Takimoto has said in an interview that the Japanese giant would like to produce packs for its rivals. Since Toyota has such a large investment into batteries for its current and future range of hybrids, plug-ins and fully electric vehicles, it only makes sense to capotalize on all forms of incoming profit. Toyota owns 60 percent of a joint venture with Panasonic to produce lithium ion batteries specifically for use in electric vehicles, and the JV already sells nickel metal hydride packs to some automakers.
