EVCast offers up panel of "experts" to take your electric car questions tomorrow

If you’d like to listen to a sort of state of the electric vehicle industry panel discussion, tune in to the EVCast tomorrow. The live show (which will be available later as a podcast and for download) starts at 1:30 Eastern (10:30 am Pacific) on Tuesday. Listeners can tune send in questions andCar Blog Green on the EVcast.com chat board (free membership is required to participate). The panel will discuss the following topics: $25 billion in waiting for EV development. Who should get it and why? Has hydrogen as an automotive fuel gone the way of the dinosaur? What does the chaos of the US auto industry mean for the up and coming EV industry? Milage Tax: Sensible or not? As a side note: the reason for the quotes on the headline above is that for some reason I’m included in the EVCast panel. I’m still not sure how much of an expert I am, but I want to make it clear that I’m not slighting the others who are scheduled to appear on the show: Ian Clifford, our old friend and CEO of ZENN, and Gint Federas, an EVCast member. I just hope they don’t ask me to sing . 1936 Chevy Sedan gets the electric car conversion treatment [w/video]

Click above and scroll down to watch the video Shade tree mechanics. A 1936 Chevy Sedan. Down home narrator vibe. Yup, this video from a local TV station in Oklahoma has got everything you might be looking for to prove that electric cars are as American as apple pie. Emissions and gasoline use, on the other hand, don’t belong in this rewritten version of classic American cars. They are banished in favor of a recycled forklift motor and some truck batteries. This EV conversion, done near in Oklahoma City, has created a car called the DC Cruiser. The Cruiser can go about 20 miles on a charge using a 10-inch electric motor coupled directly to the transmission, there is no clutch, and has about 50 horsepower. Nothing fancy here, just a few older gentlemen who wanted to revive a classic – and make it better. Watch their story after the jump. Norwegian electric car company Th!nk going Swedish?

The site for all things Th!nk, Electric Aid, has gotten a hold of a new rumor surrounding the Norwegian electric automaker: it may no longer be a Norwegian company. Swedish TV station SVT is apparently reporting that production of the electric City car may move from Aurskog, Norway to Sweden. After all, now has a bit of extra capacity; SAAB stopped production this week. It’s all rumor and hearsay at this point, but given Th!nk’s recent troubles in Norway , this move might make sense. And remember, Swedish businesses invested $20 million in Th!nk earlier this month. Electric Aid also points us to a new Th!nk press release that says, look here, that the Swedish Royal Court recently took delivery of two Th!nk City vehicles . The Swedes were introduced to the electric cars last June during “Svenske Flaggans Dag” on June 6th 2008, when the THINK City cruised through Stockholm in a sort of eco-car parade. Thanks to Andre for the tip! [Source: SVT via Electric Aid ] Continue reading Norwegian electric car company Th!nk going Swedish? Neil Young eat your heart out: presenting EVCast, the musical

Neil Young is not the only one who can write some green car songs . Our friends Bo and Ryan over at EVCast have taken it upon themselves to put together a collection of parody songs explaining the plight and hope of the EV community these days. Special guest stars include Gavin Shoebridge (kiwiEV), known for his electric vehicle conversions, and a great Kermit impression. Pay attention and you’ll relive the Tesla price increase fallout , dream about hypermining, and hear Elon Musk turned into a vilian (of sorts). No one – not even Bo and Ryan – are promising in tune performances, but at the very least this is a little uplifting bit of audio in the middle of a lot of bad news. Thanks to Michal B. of the Czech EV Club for the tip! You can listen to EVCast: The Musical here . Enjoy! GM’s Volt line director, Tony Posawatz, becomes new EDTA co-chairman,

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in Remember how we were all excited when the picture above first appeared ? It was our first official (if leaked) look at the production version of the Chevy Volt, and I bet a lot of people were saying to themselves, “Man, if that dude in the picture would just get out of the frakking way, we’d be able to see the car more.” Well, that guy there is Tony Posawatz, the vehicle line director for the Chevy Volt, and he was just named co-chairman of the Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA). Posawatz replaces Honda’s Ed Cohen, who was co-chair since early 2004; Cohen is still a part of the board. The other co-chair is John Bryson, the retired chairman & CEO of Southern California Edison. More details after the jump. VIDEO: What’s it like to drive the prototype of the world’s fastest production motorcycle?

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , On Two Wheels , USA Click above for high-res image gallery of the electric Mission One sport bike If you’re like some of us here at AutoblogGreen, a few minutes after reading all about the new Mission One , the world’s fastest production electric motorcycle , you were daydreaming about sitting in its saddle waiting for the light to change from red. In the next lane, some guy on a Suzuki Hayabusa was revving his engine like crazy, preparing to let out his clutch. Perhaps you imagined giving the guy a nod of the helmet and an easy smile knowing the silence of your steed and your relaxed attitude was intimidating in its own way. What might really happen when the light turns green? The Hayabusa is famously fast and can produce around the same amount of torque as the electric newcomer. However, as Mission Motors CEO, Forrest Deuth, reminded us when we spoke the other day, the gas-powered bike produces its torque at thousands of RPMs, while the Mission One has it waiting for you from the get go. The result, we’re told, is a very controllable launch, followed by extremely quick acceleration, undisturbed by the shifting of gears. Compare that to the uncertainty of dropping a clutch on a screaming traditional sport bike. Of course, no one has yet ridden the bike that was unveiled yesterday, so can this reverie be believed? Hit the jump for our answer and video testimonials. Washington 2009: picture fun with the Saturn Flextreme

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Hybrid , Saturn , AutoblogGreen Exclusive , Green Daily , Washington DC Auto Show Click above for high-res image gallery of the Saturn Flextreme One of the guilty pleasures available during the quiet period before the public days of an auto show is taking pictures when no one is around. We’ve seen the Saturn Flextreme (and it’s Opel cousin ) before, but haven’t seen it spinning around on the stand all by itself, just asking for a few shutter clicks. We obliged, of course, and present you with these images. We got a little carried away with the long shutter speeds and liked the trippy effects they created. Oh, to have our fisheye with us at all times. Technical details on this Volt-like plug-in hybrid concept can be found here . This post is all about the pics. Enjoy. ABG Quick Drive: Ford Focus EV mule [w/VIDEO]

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Ford , Detroit Auto Show , First Drive Click the Focus EV “mule” for a high res gallery As Ford was getting ready to make its big announcement this week in Detroit that it would build and sell a battery electric car beginning in 2011 , I got a call asking if I’d like to come down and drive one of the development “mules.” Being loathe to reject such opportunities, we immediately worked on squeezing it into the busy auto show schedule. Right after the Fisker press conference on Monday, I headed over to the Ford booth to get my ride. A “mule” vehicle in automotive engineering parlance, is a non-representative vehicle fitted with a new powertrain or suspension components for testing purposes. In this case, Ford had a pair of current Focus sedans equipped with an electric drive train and lithium ion battery pack that was developed in partnership with Magna International. I spent some time chatting with chief engineer Greg Frenette and Magna rep Dick Devogelaere about the car and what we would see for production in two years time. The production model will be based on Ford’s C-segment platform, meaning it will be Focus-sized. However, Ford has already said it will have several vehicles in the U.S. market off this platform, including an MPV like the European C-Max. Frenette would not say which body style would initially get the electric drive. One item he would confirm was that there would be none of the whole leasing and taking back of the electric cars that other companies are still infamous for. The new EV will be sold outright to retail customers through Ford dealers beginning in 2011. Pricing is still undetermined.
