UK next in line for MINI E testing?

Click above for a high res gallery of the MINI E It’s no surprise that there is a lot of demand for the all-electric version of the MINI. We heard that London might get some of the limited-supply MINI E’s last fall , but now the Telegraph is saying that a plug-in version of the MINI could be “on sale in Britain” by the end of 2009 (we assume the lease-only model for these cars will continue). If MINI’s test program does move to the UK, it would expand the test areas beyond Germany and the U.S. to the iconic car’s home turf. That’s fitting, no? As for the already-announced test locations, the New York and LA participants should be getting their MINI Es in the next few weeks while Berlin and Munich residents need to wait until later this spring. And you will receive a $7,500 federal tax rebate when you buy the full speed Whip.” Cool. Also, this is not a smart fortwo , no matter what it looks like. If you’re interested in getting a Whip, feel free to convince a friend to buy one, too. Tesla Model S teaser image #3 (is it even a teaser?)

Well, we just wouldn’t be AutoblogGreen if we didn’t obsess over every little detail over at Tesla Motors, right? From the good to the bad and the in between , we like to know what’s going on with the company that brought electric car lust to the amsses. Today we got our invite to the March 26 unveiling of the Model S sedan , and it included the teaser image you see above. Sadly, the new pic tells us absolutely nothing more about the car, but at least we know the graphic designers have been keeping busy. 20 more days until we get to see the whole thing. Until then, we can go back and look at the first two teasers ( here and here ) and wait. Nissan plans EV network where Americans actually stop

The Nissan EV team may have been spending some time in Sweden . The automaker is thinking out loud about an EV charging network that takes into consideration where people actually stop their cars. The planned network for America may therefore include places such as fast-food restaurants and other roadside stops or even car dealers, which could offer recharging as a courtesy. Electricity at these posts would be paid using a credit card. With these chargers, a car could get up to 80 percent battery charge (enough for about 80 miles) in about 30 minutes, is Nissan’s upcoming EVs, scheduled for 2012, perform as expected. The general layout of the planned network uses three types of charge points: home chargers in the garage; workplace charging, including parking lots and garages in downtown business areas; and a public infrastructure built around normal transportation areas like shopping malls, movie theaters, restaurants and airports. VW CEO Martin Winterkorn: Electric cars 15-20 years away

Click above for a high-res gallery of the VW up! Show season is upon us, which means there will be a ton of interesting new concept vehicles and freshly announced production models for all of us gearheads to ogle over. Another sometimes overlooked feature of auto shows like the one that’s currently taking place in Geneva is the presence of top executives of major automakers who are uncommonly willing to share their thoughts. Such is the case with Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn, who told a group of reporters that electric cars are an important piece of the puzzle when it comes to the greening of our transportation industry – just not any time soon. In the short term, VW, which recently teamed up with Toshiba to develop electric drive systems, is focused on increasing the efficiency of the tried-and-true internal combustion engine. According to Winterkorn ( and others ), electric vehicles won’t have a majority share in the market for another 15-20 years. Perhaps it’s not surprising to hear this projected timetable from Volkswagen, which is recognized as a leader in modern diesel technology. Still, we think he’s got a point. Currently, of the millions of automobiles sold worldwide each year, a minimal percentage are powered by electrons. Even after new vehicles like the Chevy Volt come online, it will take a number of years before their combined sales even begin to approach that of the gasoline or diesel engine. Whether or not it will take 20 years we don’t know, but it’s definitely coming. Report: 32.7 million electric cars by 2015

Sometimes it seems like we are constantly bringing you articles and studies that might be seen as somewhat pessimistic or even skeptical of our future highways being populated by many electric cars. We were at a loss ourselves to find more than five electric cars you can purchase in the U.S. this year . However, the report that we are able to bring you news of today does not err on the conservative side. Worldwide Nanotechnology Electric Vehicle Market Shares Strategies, and Forecasts by Wintergreen Research Inc. predicts that by 2015, 32.7 million electric autos will have been shipped. Not too shabby considering they count a total of 685 battery-powered vehicles sold last year. Unfortunately, we could only Car Blog Greenthe summary and the table of contents of the 452-page report (it’s $3,400 to Car Blog Greenthe rest) but it does seem the authors have a pretty thorough knowledge of the players in the industry today and seem to base their optimism on increasing volumes of lower cost lithium ion batteries leveraging the implementation of higher performance nanotechnology-derived thin film lithium cells. They also see the electric vehicle as a way of storing energy from renewable sources and foresee the rise of package financing for cars and solar panels. Now, if you’ll excuse us, our rose-colored glasses are getting misty. Ex-President Clinton loses out on Tesla Roadster test drive, for now

Earlier this week, former president Bill Clinton was in Burbank, California for a president’s day luncheon with a group of assorted green-minded politicians and business executives. Also on hand was Jeremy Snyder (that’s him on the left in the photo), the general manager of the Los Angeles Tesla store. Snyder was invited along by one of the early Tesla investors and a silver Roadster was also on hand. The event was held in what is claimed to be the only Platinum LEED certified aircraft hanger in the world. Needless to say, the former prez was eager to hop behind the wheel of the diminutive battery-powered sports car. Unfortunately, as the event was wrapping up, the guys with the suits and earpieces called a halt to the fun and dragged Clinton off to his next appointment before his thrill ride. With Tesla issuing an open invitation to the former president, it’s surely only a matter of time before a drive is arranged. ABG reader sends in Colorado Current electric car update

So, earlier this week we looked into a tip we got about an all-electric car called the Current. The website for the car left a little to be desired , and it looked like maybe another tale of someone with promising just a little more than they can deliver. Well, AutoblogGreen reader Brian from Colorado, who lives in – surprise – Colorado, actually paid the show a visit and sent in some pictures and a report. You can find some of what he wrote in hisCar Blog Green , things like that these are Chinese imports (via Pakistan), that they can go 70 mph and that they haven’t yet been through any crash testing. Brian also wrote the following to us directly: He [the shop owner] told me he plans on bringing in 4 to 6 more models in the next 90 days including the car that looks like the Mini and a small truck. He also told me he has been working on bringing and/or making battery powered cars for 5 years. He did not want me to take pictures of the motor, inverters, or the batteries but he told me they are testing several brands. He says he is asked everyday by phone and email what electronic parts he is using in the cars. He said they are available products and he wants to put as much US made products in the cars as he can. He also had a 5 speed transmission that he was testing. Personal observation: he is a car salesman and I have looked at his website and spec sheets and most of the cars I saw did not match, such as AC and CD stereo so take that for what’s it’s worth. The cars I saw had not been delivered and as you can see in the pictures were being built . The car I was able to ride in on the test drive did have AC but still had a crappy cassette player . I just wanted to find out if the cars are real and available for sale and if they can be driven on the highway and it appears to me that they can be driven, at least in Colorado on the highway. The red car I drove was going to Florida and two cars, Silver and White I think, are going to California. So, that’s what one reader reports. You can see Brian’s pictures here (the big ones are from him, the smaller are from the website). Any more questions? Fisker Karma S convertible now available for order

Click above for high-res gallery of the Fisker Karma S Hopeful buyers of the Fisker Karma S now have a place to send their deposits to get in line for the first run of the extended-range plug-in drop top. Head PR man Russel Datz has reportedly confirmed that today’s deposits of $25,000 will lead to deliveries at the end of 2011, though the final price has yet to be determined. That’s a long wait to be sure, but getting a brand new vehicle with such cutting edge technology is anything but easy. Oh, and did we mention it’s also stunningly beautiful? Like the four-door Karma , the upcoming S model uses a GM-sourced 2.0L four cylinder Ecotec engine that’s turbocharged to the tune of 260 horsepower. That gas-burning powerplant will spin up a generator and recharge the lithium ion battery pack sitting in the center of the car. Those looking to use zero gasoline will need to map their trips out to 50 miles or less, but sufficient amounts of electricity will be available to hurl the slinky Karma S to 60 in under 6 seconds, courtesy of over 400 horses from twin electric motors. Neil Young eat your heart out: presenting EVCast, the musical

Neil Young is not the only one who can write some green car songs . Our friends Bo and Ryan over at EVCast have taken it upon themselves to put together a collection of parody songs explaining the plight and hope of the EV community these days. Special guest stars include Gavin Shoebridge (kiwiEV), known for his electric vehicle conversions, and a great Kermit impression. Pay attention and you’ll relive the Tesla price increase fallout , dream about hypermining, and hear Elon Musk turned into a vilian (of sorts). No one – not even Bo and Ryan – are promising in tune performances, but at the very least this is a little uplifting bit of audio in the middle of a lot of bad news. Thanks to Michal B. of the Czech EV Club for the tip! You can listen to EVCast: The Musical here . Enjoy!
