2010 Porsche Panamera to get standard auto start/stop
Click the Panamera interior for a high res gallery Porsche will publicly show its new Panamera four door for the first time at the Shanghai Motor Show in April and put it on sale in the U.S. in October. When it launches, it will be the first Porsche equipped with automatic start/stop capability. The start/stop system will be standard on both manual transmission and dual clutch PDK gearboxes. At launch, the Panamera will only be available with a choice of 4.8L V8s with and without turbochargers at 500 hp and 400 hp respectively. Unfortunately, even with the start-stop and direct injection, the 400 hp engine will only manage 21.8 mpg (U.S.) on the EU combined cycle which is nothing to get to excited about. EPA numbers aren’t yet available for the U.S.-spec Panamera. Those hoping for more respectable mileage will have to wait for the hybrid version of the Panamera, which should come out later in 2010 or 2011. Now that Porsche has launched a diesel version of the Cayenne , we might even see such a thing in the Panamera. Hyundai’s i30 blue will be first with ISG (stop start) technology
Auto Blog: Emerging Technologies , Hyundai , Geneva Motor Show Click to enlarge Hyundai wants journalists who attend the Geneva Motor Show to focus on the new HED-6 concept SUV (above). That’s fine and all, but the company’s green blue news is that for the first time, a production Hyundai will get stop-start technology. The i30 blue is the lucky recipient of the micro-hybrid system, which Hyundai calls ISG (Idle Stop and Go). The Korean automaker says ISG “will contribute to a significant cut in both fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions.” The i30 blue will also be the first to wear the “blue” badge; step one in Hyundai going global with its Blue Drive technology . The standard i30 can spew just 119g/km of CO 2 from a 115PS 1.6-litre CRDi turbodiesel engine, while the petrol version of the 1.6-liter engine normally emits 152g/km. Using ISG on the gasoline engine drops emissions to 142g/km and reduces fuel consumption by seven percent. The i30 blue will go on sale in the UK this fall. SsangYong going for "radical restructuring" and "business as usual"
Auto Blog: Etc. , EV/Plug-in , Phoenix Click above for high-res gallery of the SsangYong Actyon Last April, the SsangYong’s future looked bright, with new diesel hybrid technology and a 20-vehicle global line-up trumpeted loudly . Things went downhill after that, with the company going into receivership (like Chapter 11 bankruptcy) and then the Sollers offer . On Friday, a court in South Korea (SsangYong is a South Korean company) granted the company “court receivership” status. This means the company now has time to restructure itself but also leads to a very confusing press release. As you can Car Blog Greenafter the break, the announcement says that the change means “business as usual for SsangYong” and also says that that the court’s decition paves “the way for radical restructuring.” Is it really radical to do business as usual? Whatever. What we’re interested in is what this means for Phoenix and their all-electric SUT? We have a email in to Phoenix and will let you know if they have anything to add. Denso to create plastic parts from castor oil
Auto Blog: Etc. Many people likely think of castor oil as a medicinal product, and, according to the Food and Drive Administration, it is in fact effective as an over-the-counter laxative. Yum! Auto parts supplier Denso has found another use for the oil that comes from the castor bean: construction of certain plastic components. Specifically, the first castor oil plastic product to roll out of Denso’s Japanese labs is as a radiator tank. We suspect that Toyota is the first automaker that will feature the tanks, considering the long relationship the two companies have enjoyed over the years. Not only is the castor oil resin more environmentally friendly, it’s actually more resistant to corrosion from road salt (common in much of the United States where the new tanks will be sent). The new biomaterial will be used in the future as an alternative to plastics that are derived from petroleum such as polypropylene, polyamide and polybutylene terephthalate. Although gasoline vehicles in Europe suffer from tough diesel competition, automakers still build them and are able to find plenty of buyers. For your perusal, we found a list of available cars that are as efficient as possible. Check it out after the jump.
