Fisker Karma S convertible now available for order
Click above for high-res gallery of the Fisker Karma S Hopeful buyers of the Fisker Karma S now have a place to send their deposits to get in line for the first run of the extended-range plug-in drop top. Head PR man Russel Datz has reportedly confirmed that today’s deposits of $25,000 will lead to deliveries at the end of 2011, though the final price has yet to be determined. That’s a long wait to be sure, but getting a brand new vehicle with such cutting edge technology is anything but easy. Oh, and did we mention it’s also stunningly beautiful? Like the four-door Karma , the upcoming S model uses a GM-sourced 2.0L four cylinder Ecotec engine that’s turbocharged to the tune of 260 horsepower. That gas-burning powerplant will spin up a generator and recharge the lithium ion battery pack sitting in the center of the car. Those looking to use zero gasoline will need to map their trips out to 50 miles or less, but sufficient amounts of electricity will be available to hurl the slinky Karma S to 60 in under 6 seconds, courtesy of over 400 horses from twin electric motors. Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Detroit Auto Show , Fisker Click above to enlarge the Fisker Karma While we’re waiting for Fisker Automotive to unveil the Karma S , the “Sunset,” later today, we got a chance to check out last year’s big hit, the Karma. The plug-in hybrid is on the wood floor in all of its metallic blue glory, and we snapped a few quick pics to tide you over. The good news is that we also got a preview shot of the Karma S. Here’s what the it looks like (OK, OK, sorry it’s such a tease). Two weeks ago, Fisker promised us that the car “will blow your top!” and we only have a few more hours until we can say for sure. BREAKING: Detroit 2009 – GM building Volt battery packs with LG Chem cells
Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Hybrid , GM , Detroit Auto Show After showing off its latest cars and concepts yesterday at the Detroit Auto Show , General Motors reserved its second press conference today for battery news. As has been rumored for months, South Korea’s LG Chem has been selected to supply the lithium-ion cells that will power the Chevy Volt. However, LG Chem and its U.S. subsidiary will not be supplying full packs to GM. Instead, GM has decided to keep the pack production in-house along with the battery management systems and all the power electronics. The automaker will be building a pack assembly facility here in Michigan, with LG Chem only supplying the cells. GM is currently working on finalizing the site selection and working with local and state officials on the approvals. The site of the factory is expected to be announced soon with site preparation starting early this year. Tooling of the factory should be completed by early 2010 with production starting soon afterward. GM also announced a new partnership with the University of Michigan to create the Advanced Battery Coalition for Drivetrains (ABCD). ABCD will focus on researching batteries and integration issues with a specific focus on vehicle applications. Press release after the jump. Pierce Brosnan cruising in a Hydrogen 7 to Golden Globes
Filed under: Etc. , Hydrogen , Green Daily After Mamma Mia! and being James Bond, what else is there to do but let BMW loan you the dual-fuel Hydrogen 7 to go to the 66th Golden Globe Awards tonight. That must’ve been what Pierce Brosnan was thinking, as he (pictured above with his wife, Keely Shaye Smith) will be one of many celebs headed to the red carpet in a luxury ride; this one just happens to be capable of “zero-emission” miles. Hilary Swank , Kristen Davis , Brad Pitt and others have previously taken the H7 for a spin. We’re busy with the news coming from Detroit , but we still have a question about what’s happening in LA: what kind of alt-fuel car will we see the most of tonight? Teslas? Other EVs? Hydrogen-powered? Diesels ? Anyone want to make any sort of predictions on this topic? Filed under: EV/Plug-in , SMART , Detroit Auto Show , Green Daily Click above for a high-res gallery of the smart ed We got our first look at the new smart ed for America yesterday (well, actually, it’s just a European smart ed that’s been brought over the pond). Daimler has now released details of just how Americans will be getting our hands on the vehicle that is already being tested in the UK and Italy . In Europe, the smart ed will be going into production with lithium-ion batteries at the end of this year. Since Daimler is actually moving forward with making these cars now, it’s high time we found out who would provide the batteries. Oh, and what’s this? At the end of the press release (pasted after the jump), we learn that Daimler will work with Evonik Industries AG on the energy storage for the electric fortwo. Last month, the companies announced a joint venture to bring the batteries, called Li-Tec, to bring lithium cells to Daimler vehicles; now it’s official for the smart eds. We’ll have an interview with smart car of America’s Dave Schrembi on how the Americans will get their hands on one of these electric smarts posted soon.
