Geneva preview: Fisker’s European strategy – and have you seen these pics?

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Fisker Karma Fisker Automotive gave the automotive world a big reveal – the Karma S – last month at the Detroit Auto Show . For the upcoming Geneva show, the company doesn’t have anything as impressive planned, but we’re still interested in the news they promised us today. Specifically, Fisker says that when the plug-in hybrid Karma and Karma S make their European debuts in Geneva, the company will also announce its European retail network strategy and pricing. In Detroit, Henrik Fisker announced that the Karma would cost US$87,900 and said it hopes to sell 15,000 Karmas a year starting in 2011. More details after the jump. While looking on the Fisker website for additional information, we discovered that a bunch of new pictures of the Karma had been posted there. These are gorgeous images, and we present them in the gallery below for your viewing pleasure. New wallpaper, anyone? No surprise: Nissan-built small Chrysler model in trouble

Click above for high-res image gallery of the Dodge Hornet concept Color us unsurprised at the revelation that the long awaited tie up between Chrysler and Nissan has hit a rocky patch. Recall that the two automakers struck a deal last April that would have Dodge supply the next generation of the Nissan Titan fullsize pickup truck (built atop its Ram platform) in exchange for a duo of small cars to be built by Nissan and sold as Dodges. After the last few years of failed attempts to get some other automaker (first by way of Chinese automaker Chery , then Nissan ) to build a small car for sale here in America, we’ve grown immune to the disappointment of not getting the Dodge Hornet concept produced in a timely fashion. According to reports, sales of the Dodge Trazo, which is literally nothing more than a Nissan Versa wearing new badges, will go on as planned in South America. The other small car and the Dodge-built pickup have reportedly been put on hold as the companies work to fix their own financial problems. Our last hope may be that Chrysler is able to drum up enough money to make the planned strategic alliance with Fiat work out as hoped before its too late. Neil Young eat your heart out: presenting EVCast, the musical

Neil Young is not the only one who can write some green car songs . Our friends Bo and Ryan over at EVCast have taken it upon themselves to put together a collection of parody songs explaining the plight and hope of the EV community these days. Special guest stars include Gavin Shoebridge (kiwiEV), known for his electric vehicle conversions, and a great Kermit impression. Pay attention and you’ll relive the Tesla price increase fallout , dream about hypermining, and hear Elon Musk turned into a vilian (of sorts). No one – not even Bo and Ryan – are promising in tune performances, but at the very least this is a little uplifting bit of audio in the middle of a lot of bad news. Thanks to Michal B. of the Czech EV Club for the tip! You can listen to EVCast: The Musical here . Enjoy! VIDEO: Henrik Fisker talks about the Karma

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Hybrid , Detroit Auto Show , Fisker Click above for high-res gallery of the Fisker Karma S Following the unveiling of the production version of the Fisker Karma and the Karma Sunset concept, Henrik Fisker sat down to talk about the car company he has launched. We now have confirmation of some of the technical details such as the battery supplier which is Advanced Lithium Power. Fisker recently took an equity stake in ALP and has exclusive access to batteries from that company. Given the logistics of building the Karma in Finland with Valmet Automotive, profitability has two be a question. Fisker insists the company can build the Karma profitably at the $87,900 and venture capital funds like Kleiner Perkins would not have invested otherwise. Given some of the dubious internet start ups that these Silicon Valley money men have invested in, a profitable car company is no guarantee. Nonetheless, at least Fisker will have some revenue once they start delivering cars which is at lot more than can be said for many internet companies. BYD may license Fe batteries to other automakers

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , European Union , Japan , China , USA , BYD Click above for high-res image gallery of BYD’s PHEVs BYD , the Chinese car and battery company who are now at the Detroit Auto Show with their “Dual mode” hybrids and e6 all-electric MPV (above) have made it known that they may be willing to license their inexpensive battery tech to other automakers. Indeed, they have already been fielding inquiries from Japanese, European and American firms. They say their “Fe battery,” thought to be a lithium iron phosphate ( LiFePO 4 ) formulation, costs less than half of what typical lithium ion batteries cost, and are safer and longer lasting. Their downside is that they can not hold as much energy and can add greatly to the weight of an electric vehicle. The BYD e6, for example, needs 1323 lbs of “Fe battery” to achieve its 249-mile range whereas the Tesla Roadster power pack weighs in at about 900 lbs. Despite that shortcoming we think this may be a decent solution for the right sort of vehicle and expect someone might take them up on it. Detroit 2009: production Fisker Karma – and Karma S preview

Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Detroit Auto Show , Fisker Click above to enlarge the Fisker Karma While we’re waiting for Fisker Automotive to unveil the Karma S , the “Sunset,” later today, we got a chance to check out last year’s big hit, the Karma. The plug-in hybrid is on the wood floor in all of its metallic blue glory, and we snapped a few quick pics to tide you over. The good news is that we also got a preview shot of the Karma S. Here’s what the it looks like (OK, OK, sorry it’s such a tease). Two weeks ago, Fisker promised us that the car “will blow your top!” and we only have a few more hours until we can say for sure.
