New Flint plant cancelled, Volt/Cruze engines to be built at existing location
2011 Chevy Cruze and its new 1.4L Turbo engine After canceling the construction contracts for a new Flint, MI engine plant a month ago, General Motors has now officially canceled the whole plant. The plant was due to build new 1.4L four cylinder engines for the Chevy Cruze and Volt starting in 2010. Based on current and expected future production volumes, the company decided it had enough space in an existing plant adjacent to where the new one was to be built. This spring, GM will begin preparation of the Flint South engine plant to accommodate tooling for the new engine line. Production of the new engines is scheduled to start in December 2010. When Cruze production begins next spring, the initial supplies of engines will come from a plant in Aspern, Austria until the domestic production is ready. Rendered speculation: Wired puts together the Tesla Model S
It’ll be another month before Tesla officially pulls the cover off the Model S, but Wired Had their in-house photoshopper Holl Liou take a crack at rendering the car. Tesla has sent out two teaser shots so far ( 1 , 2 ) and Liou has used the enhanced version of the most recent shot to provide a roof-line to the original image. The roof-line of the rendering is a no-brainer, the only real questions that remain are the tail and the front view of the nose. The other unknown, of course, is the battery configuration. We know the Model S is rear wheel drive with the motor at the back end. Will the battery be packaged under the floor? Under the hood in the front? Down the center tunnel? All will be revealed in a few weeks. BREAKING: GM reportedly cancels construction contracts on Flint engine plant
Auto Blog: Manufacturing/Plants , Chevrolet , GM 2011 Chevy Cruze and its new 1.4L Turbo engine In yet another blow to both General Motors and the hard-hit city of Flint MI, it appears that the automaker has canceled construction contracts on its new Flint MI engine plant. Local TV station WJRT-12 reported the news late last night and we’re still waiting on a comment from GM. The plant was scheduled to produce a new 1.4L four cylinder engine to be used in the Chevrolet Cruze and Volt beginning int 2010. Work on the factory had already been suspended in mid-December in an effort to cut spending. The plant was announced last September just before the financial crisis hit in full force and even sales of small cars collapsed. GM spokeswoman Sharon Basel told the TV station that other facilities are being considered for production of the engines. An existing version of the 1.4L “Family 0″ engine is already being produced overseas and if world-wide auto sales continue to lag over the next 18-24 months, those factories would likely have sufficient capacity to supply engines for both the Cruze and Volt in 2010. We’ll update this story as we learn more. Thanks to Donny for the tip!
