Ford touts European successes of new Ka and Fiesta

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Ford Fiesta Ford is justifiably proud of the sales figures that its new Ka and Fiesta small cars have been able to rack up amidst a struggling global market. These two products have helped the automaker increase its European market share by 0.5 percentage points to 8.8 percent. More importantly, it proves that consumers do want to buy small cars as long as they are stylish, comfortable and modern. Legislation from various governments that promotes the purchase of fuel efficient, low-emission cars has also boosted demand for the two vehicles. Both models were released late last year to a great deal of fanfare from the European automotive press, and U.S. sales of the new Fiesta are slated for 2010. To keep the hype machine in top gear, Ford will select 100 individuals in America and plans to give them keys to the Fiesta ahead of its official debut as they take part in the Fiesta Movement program. In somewhat related news, Ford has also announced its new Product Sustainability Index, a program that looks to improve the environmental, social and economic impact of automobiles through 8 product attributes that it believes are the key sustainability elements of a new vehicle. Click past the break for the full rundown on what goes into the PSI, how it applies to the new Fiesta and why Ford believes it’s important. Small and safe: Toyota iQ scores 5 stars at Euro NCAP crash test

With an overall score of 79 percent, the Toyota iQ got the 5 stars that mark it as one of the safest vehicles European roads. The car could’ve had a better score, but pedestrian protection was rated a poor 54 percent. However, the iQ scored top marks in driver’s seat protection, partly thanks to its 9 (!) standard airbags distributed around the car. The iQ also includes ABS, Electronic Brake Distribution, Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control. You can’t compare the iQ’s rest results against its main competitor, the Smart Fortwo, because Euro NCAP now uses a different ratings calculation, but the fortwo got 4 stars back in 2007. Would you trade power for efficiency?

Auto Blog: Diesel , MPG , Ford Late last year, we asked our readers if they would be willing to pay $25,000 for a Ford Fiesta that managed 63 U.S. miles per gallon in EU combined cycle testing. Survey says… Yes! The results from our very unscientific poll of admittedly green-minded readers suggests that 64% of those taking part would consider paying a relatively high cost for a high mileage vehicle. Remember, though, that this was right after the sting of record gas prices that greatly impacted the driving habits of millions of Americans. Now, gas is cheap again, and Motor Trend is taking a slightly different tack with a similar question: Would you trade power for 63 miles per gallon? The target of the issue is once again the Ford Fiesta, which in ECOnetic form comes with a 1.6L TDCi turbodiesel under the hood cranking out 88 raging stallions. So, is it worth it? Answer in our new poll below. View Poll [Sources: Motor Trend , Clean Green Cars ] Would you trade power for efficiency? originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Fri, 30 Jan 2009 10:27:00 EST.
