Mulally personally thanks man who chose Fusion over Prius
Auto Blog: Hybrid , Ford , Green Daily Click above for high-res image gallery of the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid Perhaps Toyota was on to something after all when it argued that the Prius is a more natural competitor to the Fusion Hybrid than the Camry. At least one buyer in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was cross shopping the two gas sippers and ultimately decided to purchase the Ford instead of the Toyota. That story wouldn’t be all that interesting if it weren’t for a followup call made by Ford CEO Alan Mulally. That’s right, the man at the top of the heap at the Blue Oval actually called Michael Snapper to personally congratulate him and thank him for his patronage. For the record, future Fusion Hybrid shoppers probably have no reason to wait by the phone expecting a similar call. While this is little more than a publicity stunt, it seems harmless enough. The decision to purchase was already made and it symbolically proves the point that good customer service extends to all employees, right up to the top. Toyota versus Ford – arguing about mileage of their midsize cars
Auto Blog: Hybrid , MPG , Ford , Toyota Click above for high-res gallery of the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid When Ford announced the fuel mileage statistics of its new 2010 Fusion Hybrid, the Blue Oval made a big deal about its fuel mileage ratings, which, at 41 mpg city and 36 highway , bests the Toyota Camry Hybrid. Toyota kindly retorted that its Camry is bigger than Ford’s Fusion. We wonder if that’s supposed to be a good thing. The Prius is also considered a midsize car based on its interior volume, so, depending on your point of view, both the Camry and the Prius could be considered logical competition for Ford’s latest hybrid sedan. For what it’s worth, the Prius, Camry and Fusion all have an interior volume of around 100 cubic feet, give or take a foot. Splitting hairs? Most definitely. We would hazard a guess that most people cross shop the Fusion Hybrid with the Camry Hybrid, being that they are normal-looking sedans from the outside, putting the Prius on a higher green pedestal anyway. We agree with Toyota’s official blog response that all this doesn’t really matter, just so long as each manufacturer is putting its best foot forward when engineering its new cars and trucks to get the best fuel mileage possible. In this case, this is exactly what appears to be happening. ECE delivers first electric VW Golf, 199 more to go
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Volkswagen , Europe/EU The guys over at Electric Cars Europe (ECE) have finished the gas-to-electric conversion of the first of 200 Volkswagen Golfs they’ve been tasked to prepare for the Dutch energy supplier, ENEXIS (formerly known as Essent). The fleet, once it’s built converted, is to be used in the testing of the Euro version of vehicle-to-grid ( V2G ) dubbed the “Mobile Smart Grid” ( PDF ). Information about the electro-Golf is scant, though it is said to be stuffed with enough lithium ion batteries to take it 300 Km (186 miles). That would make it one of the longest range conversions we’ve ever seen. The ECE team has plenty of experience converting cars and has more recently been doing gas-bypass surgery on Lotus Elises as well as a Proton Savvy on behalf of Detroit Electric . Thanks to Matthijs for the tip! [Source: ZERAuto ] ECE delivers first electric VW Golf, 199 more to go originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 27 Jan 2009 17:14:00 EST.
