Geneva Preview: BMW X3 xDrive20d rescue vehicle, 36.2 mpg (U.S.)
Click for high-res images One of the many vehicles that will be debuting at the Geneva Motor Show this week is an emergency rescue version of the BMW X3. The rescue version is based on the X3 xDrive 20d which is powered by a 177 hp version of BMW’s 2.0L four cylinder diesel engine. Drive goes to the wheels through BMW’s torque vectoring xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Even in this SUV body, the diesel returns 36.2 mpg (U.S.). As expected of a rescue vehicle, it’s equipped with the usual array of equipment including lights, sirens and mountings for rescue equipment. Toyota will sell second-gen Priuses alongside 2010 models in Japan, not in U.S.
Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2010 Toyota Prius We’ve finally gotten some official confirmation from Toyota about the sell-two-Prius-models-at-once strategy we’ve heard so much about. During a recent media event where we drove the next-gen 2010 Toyota Prius (sorry, we can’t say much about that right now) we had a chance to talk with John McCandless, from Toyota corporate communications, and Masahiko Maeda, assistant chief engineer who was heavily involved with developing the 2010 Prius. They confirmed that both the current and next-gen models will be available for sale at the same time, but only in Japan. Here in the U.S., once the 2010 version hits the streets, that’s all she wrote for the old model. Well, except for dealers who participate in the Toyota’s Certified Used Hybrid Program . While Toyota hasn’t released pricing information for the new Prius, we’re pretty sure it’ll be more than the Honda Insight. Considering the strong sales the Insight has had in Japan thus far, keeping a cheaper Prius option around seems like a smart move for Toyota. Welcome to Geneva! Meet the 2010 Chevrolet Spark! 47 mpg (U.S.)!
Click image above for a high-res gallery of the 2010 Chevy Spark The Autoblog/AutoblogGreen team is just rolling into Geneva this morning for one of the biggest auto shows of the year, and look what we found before we even got out of the airport: Sitting in the Chevrolet media lounge right by the train station is the brand-new Chevrolet Spark. Essentially a four door version of the Beat concept we saw two years ago in New York, the Spark will be launching in other parts of the world in early 2010 and in the U.S. a year later. Both the 1.0-liter and 1.2-liter engines are expected to top 47 miles-per-gallon (U.S.) combined and emit less than 120 g/km of CO 2 . They wouldn’t let us sit in the car yet but it looks surprisingly roomy at this first look. Hopefully, General Motors will be around long enough that we’ll get to drive it. Audi adds dual clutch S-Tronic to Euro A4 and A5
Auto Blog: MPG , Audi Audi has just added a new transmission option to European-market versions of the A4 and A5. The company’s 7-speed S-Tronic dual clutch gearbox is now available with the 2.0L TFSI four cylinder. The A5 picks up 0.3 seconds in the 0-60 run and cuts 1g/km of CO 2 emissions with the new gearbox. In the sedan, the mileage is unchanged at 31.8 mpg compared to the 6-speed manual. Here in the U.S., the A4 2.0L currently comes standard with a CVT while manual and conventional automatics are optional. BREAKING: GM reportedly cancels construction contracts on Flint engine plant
Auto Blog: Manufacturing/Plants , Chevrolet , GM 2011 Chevy Cruze and its new 1.4L Turbo engine In yet another blow to both General Motors and the hard-hit city of Flint MI, it appears that the automaker has canceled construction contracts on its new Flint MI engine plant. Local TV station WJRT-12 reported the news late last night and we’re still waiting on a comment from GM. The plant was scheduled to produce a new 1.4L four cylinder engine to be used in the Chevrolet Cruze and Volt beginning int 2010. Work on the factory had already been suspended in mid-December in an effort to cut spending. The plant was announced last September just before the financial crisis hit in full force and even sales of small cars collapsed. GM spokeswoman Sharon Basel told the TV station that other facilities are being considered for production of the engines. An existing version of the 1.4L “Family 0″ engine is already being produced overseas and if world-wide auto sales continue to lag over the next 18-24 months, those factories would likely have sufficient capacity to supply engines for both the Cruze and Volt in 2010. We’ll update this story as we learn more. Thanks to Donny for the tip!
