UPS deploys 300 CNG trucks in four states, now has 800 worldwide
UPS has announced the deployment of 300 new CNG-powered trucks in North America. The trucks have been deployed over the past month to Denver (43 units); Atlanta (46); Oklahoma City (100), and four cities in California: Sacramento (21), San Ramon (63), Los Angeles (9) and Ontario (18). This gives UPS a total of 800 vehicles across the company’s worldwide fleet that burn natural gas out of a total of 1,819 UPS vehicles that use alternative fuels. The alt-energy sources include CNG, liquefied natural gas, propane, electric and hybrid electric vehicles in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany (pictured), France, Brazil, Chile, Korea and the United Kingdom. These 300 vans were not converted vehicles but designed to be CNG-capable from the start. Bolloré courts Evo Morales and Bolivia’s lithium
French industry giant Group Bolloré, which we’re familar with for their involvement with Pininfarina in a handful of interesting electric car projects, announced it has contacted Bolivian President Evo Morales to secure a supply of lithium in order to produce advanced batteries. Negotiations have been in the works for more than a year to guarantee access to what is estimated to be half of the total lithium resources in the world, located in Salar de Uyuni. Bolloré is competing against Japan’s Mitsubishi. One of the questions that arose during these negotiations was Morales’s demand that a complete EV industry be established in Bolivia, instead of just simple mining facilities. Morales is currently visiting France on an official visit. Spain announces $5.3 billion in aid for domestic auto industry
Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2009 Seat Ibiza Ecomotive The United States , the United Kingdom and France have already announced plans to stimulate the ailing automakers and suppliers that do business in their countries, so it’s not too surprising to hear that Spain has joined in the ranks as well. Like those other bailout packages, the Spanish government is highlighting the need to invest in eco-friendly automotive technologies. According to data provided by the Spanish government, 350,000 people are employed in auto-related industries in Spain and 6 percent of the country’s GDP is related to the automotive market. Last year, new car sales in Spain dropped by about 28 percent, which seems to be about the average slump worldwide. The European Union has requested additional information from Spain regarding the plan before it will sign off on the aid package. Some European countries have complained that France’s plan amounts to illegal protectionism. Jon Stewart talks to "Two Billion Cars" author Daniel Sperling
Click above and scroll down to watch the video Whether the cheap Tata Nano is the driving force behind a massive upswing in the number of cars actively used in the world or not , the day is coming when there will be two billion cars on the roads. So says author and California Air Resources Board member Daniel Sperling . Sperling was on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart last week to discuss his new book and to give his predictions about which technologies would power these two billion cars. He said that “eventually” the “vast majority” of the two billion cars will be alternative-energy (pure electric, plug-in hybrids, biofueled, and hydrogen fuel cell) vehicles. Yes, that was as specific as he wanted to get on Comedy Central. Sperling also claimed that we’d need “tens of billions” of dollars in government aid to make the large-scale shift to plug-ins and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Stewart, for his part, said that the automakers represent the past, and he wondered why we don’t just let them fiddle with the deck chairs while others get fuel cell and electric vehicles on the road. Watch the full interview after the jump. Bonus history lesson: Sperling has a slightly troubled past . Ze EV? Valeo, Michelin team up for French electric car champion
It’s not a new idea , but Valeo and Michelin want France to be known for electric cars. The two companies have announced they will partner up to develop and build pure EVs and plug-in hybrids. One of the more important partners, an automaker, is still missing. The two companies hope that Michelin’s Active Wheel technology, which uses two built-in electric motors in each wheel, will entice one to climb aboard. According to Automotive News Europe , Michelin says that Active Wheel technology eliminates the need for a gearbox, clutch, transmission shift, universal joint or anti-roll bar. There’s a lot of efficiency gained right there. If everything goes as planned, the resulting vehicle will be a “French champion,” sort of a new EV icon with a strong French connection. Last fall, Valeo won the Automechanika Innovation Award for its StARS Micro-Hybrid System . The system, also known as Stop & Start, can be found in the smart fortwo micro hybrid . 1941 CGE Type TB Cabriolet electric car to be auctioned in Paris
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Europe/EU Way back in 1940, the French government commissioned a project to create a viable electric car. Using an exotic (for the time) front-wheel drive layout with an aluminum-intensive chassis and body, the Compagnie Générale d’Électricités (CGE) was born. One set of lead acid batteries was stored at the front of the car, while a second set was kept in the rear. A four-speed, foot-operated gearbox with separate reverse gear was also suitably advanced for its time, and all of these features created a car that was truly impressive, setting a record in 1942 by completing the 250-kilometer (155 mile) trek from Paris to Tours, France at an average speed of 58km/h (36mph). Unfortunately, the CGE was expensive and only 200 were produced, and there are only 2 known survivors left today. One of these unique early electric vehicles is scheduled to go up for auction at an event in Paris on February 7th hosted by Bonhams. Pre-auction estimates put the sale at €30,000 – 50,000 (roughly $38,000 – 65,000).
