Neil Young’s eco-car album, Fork in the Road, now ready for pre-order
We still have a month to wait until Neil Young’s new “Fork in the Road” album (aka, his eco-car concept record ), but Reprise Records is ready to take your money now . Unlike some deals in the green car business, if you pre-order the record, you won’t need to wait all that long to get what you paid for. The record drops on April 7 and includes a paean to Johnathan Goodwin, Young’s LincVolt mechanic, called “Johnny Magic.” Other song titles, according to Pitchfork , are “Cough Up the Bucks,” “Hit the Road,” and “Get Around.” The pre-order price for the CD/DVD set is $21.98, plus an additional $6.49 or $16.49 shipping (those are the costs to Michigan, anyway). Young recorded the album with his touring band between shows last year . You can watch Neil Young’s earphones-stuck-in-an-apple video for “Fork in the Road” here . Reuters says that work on the LincVolt is now finished and that a documentary film about driving the car gasoline-free across America is planned. Geneva 2009: Clever EDAG "Light Car Open-Source" is like safety television for tailgaters
Click above for a high-res gallery of the EDAG Light Car – Open Source EDAG has presented its new “Light Car – Open Source” concept here at the Geneva Motor Show , and while it outwardly appears to look like any other nondescript electric bubble car, there’s a lot of innovative content on the inside screaming for attention. It’s hard to know where to start: The use of (O)LED technology as both driver-configurable exterior lighting units and as a television-screen-like safety feature that alerts those behind of road conditions; its 100 percent recyclable basalt fiber chassis (said to be at once lighter and cheaper than carbon-fiber or aluminum); or the fact that this is an open-source effort, with EDAG taking the lead but freely opening up the car’s technologies to outside developers for improvement and modification. In any case, the fact that the lithium-ion powered compact car utilizes in-wheel motors that help maximize interior space is a neat detail, but we’re actually most intrigued by the (O)LED technology, which gives the Light Car an egg-smooth exterior. Out back, the (O)LEDs are used to show trailing vehicles not only the LCOS’ strength of braking, but also road conditions ahead – a pedestrian crossing the road, say, or whether there’s a speed or construction zone ahead. We imagine this sort of tech would be murder to legalize (at least in the States), but it does have us thinking in new ways about vehicle safety and car-to-car communications. See the EDAG’s (O)LED tech in action in a video after the jump , and learn more from the official press release by downloading the PDF here . Melbourne 2009: Toyota shows off HC-CV (Hybrid Camry Concept Vehicle)
Click above for a hi-res gallery of Toyota Australia’s HC-CV In about twelve months, Toyota’s Australian arm will begin producing its own Camry Hybrids. To celebrate the new contract, Toyota Australia has created a new concept called the HC-CV (Hybrid Camry Concept Vehicle), and it has just debuted at the 2009 Melbourne Auto Show. Starting with the refreshed 2010 Camry Hybrid as a base, the HC-CV features a redesigned front fascia that’s highlighted by vertical fog lights and a lower grille with a random pattern said to be inspired by nature. A body kit including side skirts, rear diffuser and spoiler complete the body modifications and the whole thing’s painted in satin while pearl with translucent blue logos and badging. A unique set of wheels rounds out the package. Inside, the seats are upholstered in another asymmetric pattern and stitched up with contrasting white thread. Under the skin, it’s pure 2010 Camry Hybrid. Check out our complete gallery below and click past the break for the official press release. Skoda Superb GreenLine officially launched
Click above for high-resolution gallery of the Škoda Superb GreenLine Škoda, a European division of Volkswagen’s auto empire, believes that big cars can be green too, and to prove it, the automaker has finally officially launched the Superb GreenLine that we first saw last year at the Geneva Motor Show in the U.K. Like the Passat that it’s based on, Škoda fits a turbodiesel engine that displaces 1.9 liters and offers up 105 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. More importantly, the GreenLine sedan manages to register 46 U.S. mpg (5.1 l / 100 km) in the combined cycle with carbon dioxide emissions of 136 g/km. Besides the miserly engine, those mileage and emissions figures are spurred on by a revised aero-friendly fascia, lowered ride height, revised gearing and low rolling resistance tires. Besides the green bits, the Superb GreenLine also offers a Park Assist system that is designed to make parallel parking an easier affair along with a “Twindoor” trunk (or boot, if you prefer) that can operate either as a normal trunk or as a hatchback. Chicago 2009: Hyundai CEO says Green is Good, Greed is Bad
Hyundai Motor America CEO and President John Krafcik gave the keynote speech at the Midwest Automotive Media Association’s kickoff breakfast yesterday morning at the Chicago Auto Show . He called his talk “Preparing for a Revolution,” and made a few admissions worth noting. Krafcik declared the “greed is good” era no longer welcome. The excesses that defined the time between the ’80s and 2008ish, “may finally be at a close. The current global economic crisis has paved the way for significant change,” he said. Then there was this: For the most part, our industry has a history of opposing environmental and safety legislation – sometimes with the force of science and good sense behind us, such as the early California EV mandate, but other times with a much weaker platform of defense. Many Americans believe that our fighting these issues is done strictly for own best interests, which run contrary to those of our country’s, and our society’s. As a result, we are painted with a broad brush as bad guys who care little about our own customers and the world we live in. Krafcik believes that the auto industry has earned its “horrible” reputation but they can still turn things around. How will this happen? By owning up to past mistakes and making great, safe vehicles and being more disciplined financially. The other potential savior? Fuel efficiency. Here’s the pertinent quote: Another revolutionary step we can take is to embrace improved fuel economy as an indisputable social good. There’s really no point in arguing about the veracity of climate change when you stop to consider the finite supply of oil, and the turmoil that our present consumption habit is fueling in the Middle East. It’s abundantly clear that improved fuel economy makes sense for our industry and for our country. As an industry, we need to take a longer term view of our environmental strategies. That means stepping up and getting ahead of the regulators where that makes sense. We think that time is now. You can Car Blog Greenthe prepared text of Krafcik’s speech after the jump. Chicago 2009: Photo fun with the 2010 Toyota Prius
Click above for a gallery of the spinning 2010 Toyota Prius Ahh, the fun you can have when an auto show isn’t exactly busy. Today at the Chicago Auto Show, we found a 2010 Toyota Prius spinning on a stand all by itself (see also: Saturn Flextreme in D.C. last week ). With not all that much to do ourselves, we set the camera to a slow shutter speed and spent some time with our fisheye lens aimed at the car. Turns out, if you fall into the camp that thinks the Prius looks a little like a spaceship, this might be what you’d see cruising through hyperspace (if it looks anything like what the movies tell us). Have fun looking at these and, if you want plan pictures of the new Prius that don’t suggest motion sickness, here they are . Bridgestone adds "One Team, One Planet" to Safety Scholars video contest
For the last two years, Bridgestone has been running a video production contest for young drivers where they produce a safety oriented 25- or 55-second ad on some aspect of safe driving. For 2009, the Safety Scholars program is back and, in addition to safety, entrants can produce a PSA on “automotive environmentalism.” If you know someone between the ages of 16 and 21 that can sling a video camera and wants a crack at a $5,000 scholarship or a new set of Bridgestone tires, let them know about this opportunity. Videos have to be submitted between May 27 and June 17. A panel of judges will then pick the top 10 videos which will be posted to YouTube, MySpace and Facebook, where people can watch and vote. The winners will be announced in July. You can check out all the rules at SafetyScholars and see a sample video from 2008 after the jump. Chevy and Clean Diesels Hit Greenest Car List
The Honda Civic GX, a vehicle that runs on compressed natural gas , was named last week as the greenest car of the year by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE). The Toyota Prius and Honda Civic Hybrid claimed spots two and three in ACEEE’s annual environmental rankings—the Green Book Online —followed by the Smart ForTwo, Toyota Yaris and Nissan Altima Hybrid. Top: Honda Civic GX Bottom: Drivers of the Civic GX fuel up with compressed natural gas rather than gasoline. This is the twelfth year that ACEEE produced the Green Book Online, which assigns vehicles a single “green” score based on tailpipe emissions, fuel consumption, greenhouse-gas emissions, and a cradle-to-grave lifecycle analysis. The most dramatic trend this year was the emergence of two Chevy cars on the top ten list—and the introduction of clean diesel vehicles. We spoke with Shruti Vaidynanathan, primary analyst for Green Book Online, about these trends. HybridCars.com: The Honda Civic GX was once again named greenest car of the year. Yet, the vehicle sells in very low quantities and most consumers don’t have access to CNG. Do sales numbers matter in the overall green car equation? read more

Coming: Cheap Chinese Cars at Costco?
Chinese cars have been displayed at the Detroit Auto Show for the past several years. Many industry critics ridiculed them for design or quality flaws. But others see these first Chinese vehicles and remember how Japanese and Korean cars were once laughed off—only to become mainstream products in America. Kathleen Ligocki, CEO of GS Motors and formerly president of Ford of Mexico, expects Chinese-designed cars to begin production in Mexico in 2010—and make their way to the US about five years after first testing the waters in Latin America and Canada. GS Motors, a Mexican company, already imports three models from China’s First Auto Works (FAW) and sold 4,000 of them in Mexico last year. Here’s the zinger: Ligocki believes Chinese cars will be sold in the US through big-box stores like Costco or Wal-Mart, which is how GS Motors is retailing them in Mexico. GS is building an assembly plant in Michoacan, Mexico with FAW. The plan is for vehicles to roll off the line beginning in 2010. GS Motors will launch the FAW brand in Mexico this year with the F1 Hatchback, an entry-level car sold for under $5,500. FAW, one of the largest Chinese automakers, is allied in China with Volkswagen. FAW also produces the Miles ZX40, a small van-style neighborhood electric vehicle, developed by Miles Electric Vehicles , based on Santa Monica, Calif. GS Motors is racing to bring the first Chinese cars to America via Mexico—but they are not alone. BYD (Build Your Dreams) showed plug-in hybrid and electric model in Detroit last month and promised to bring them to the US as early as next year. In fact, many of China’s 80 or so auto companies have made similar gestures, with varying degrees of seriousness. read more
