1936 Chevy Sedan gets the electric car conversion treatment [w/video]
Click above and scroll down to watch the video Shade tree mechanics. A 1936 Chevy Sedan. Down home narrator vibe. Yup, this video from a local TV station in Oklahoma has got everything you might be looking for to prove that electric cars are as American as apple pie. Emissions and gasoline use, on the other hand, don’t belong in this rewritten version of classic American cars. They are banished in favor of a recycled forklift motor and some truck batteries. This EV conversion, done near in Oklahoma City, has created a car called the DC Cruiser. The Cruiser can go about 20 miles on a charge using a 10-inch electric motor coupled directly to the transmission, there is no clutch, and has about 50 horsepower. Nothing fancy here, just a few older gentlemen who wanted to revive a classic – and make it better. Watch their story after the jump. San Francisco puts electric car charger in front of City Hall, ZipCar gets its frist PHEV
The city of San Francisco took another step into electric vehicle territory by installing “Smartlet” electric vehicle charging stations outside of City Hall today. The Smartlets are on loan from Coulomb Technologies and will be used to charge up cars from ZipCar, City CarShare and “a plug-in car in the City of San Francisco municipal fleet.” Mayor Gavin Newsom made the announcement this morning. Mayor Newsom, one of the few to actually own an EV1 back in the day, also wrote a post for Gas2 in which he says that he believes battery electric vehicles – not hybrids and he did not mention hydrogen – “are the quantum leap we need to make.” One thing about this caught my eye. A ZipCar with a plug? Huh? The San Francisco ZipCar site doesn’t list any vehicles that can get juice from the grid, so I called the San Francisco ZipCar office. They told me that they have just one plug-in model, specifically designated for city hall, which is a converted PHEV Prius. Thanks to Natasha M. for the tip! Prince Charles attacked as a hypocrite for taking private jet on climate change tour
Despite the best of green efforts, it seems poor Prince Charles can not catch a break. He’s been labeled a hypocrite by the Daily Mail for using a private jet to accomplish a South American tour to discuss deforestation and climate change. Back at home, the next-inline-to-the-throne has put his Jaguars and Range Rover (and even his Mum’s Bentleys ) on a bio-diesel diet , his Aston Martin sips wine-derived ethanol , and he’s made his humongous household entirely carbon-neutral . Even the trip, which could generate 322 tons of CO 2 , will be entirely offset. Since his itinerary has him making almost 40 appearances over 10 days, it would be impossible for the prince and his entourage of 14 to fly the friendly skies on commercial flights. So, to further avoid his being made to look like Rodney Dangerfield in a tiara, we here at AutoblogGreen suggest the following solution. Take the sailboat dude. Yeah, it may take a little longer but at least you wouldn’t have to Car Blog Greenabout yourself in the tabloids. Kelley Blue Book crowns four hybrids, one diesel with "Best New Family Vehicle" titles
Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2009 Escape Hybrid We got to try out both the 2008 and 2009 Ford Escape hybrid models in the AutoblogGreen garage, and found both to be respectable rides for families who need the room. Kelley Blue Book thinks so, too, and named the 2009 model one of its “2009 Best New Family Vehicles.” The Escape hybrid is rated at 32 mpg for the FWD model, 28 mpg for the 4WD. KBB included four hybrid models and one diesel car (the Jetta TDI) from five automakers in its list of ten family-friendly vehicles. Toyota and Chevy each had three models selected. The complete list is: 2009 Honda Civic 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid 2009 Chevy Malibu 2009 VW Jetta SportWagen TDI 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid 2009 Toyota RAV4 2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid 2009 Chevy Tahoe Hybrid 2009 Chevy Traverse 2009 Honda Odyssey Gallery: 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid [Source: KBB , Ford] Continue reading Kelley Blue Book crowns four hybrids, one diesel with “Best New Family Vehicle” titles Auto Blog: Hybrid , Chevrolet , Ford , Honda , Toyota , Green Daily Kelley Blue Book crowns four hybrids, one diesel with “Best New Family Vehicle” titles originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 18 Feb 2009 14:18:00 EST. Greenlings: Why do so many green cars have only three wheels?
You may have noticed that a lot of new “green” cars not only lack a large carbon footprint but they also seem to be missing something else; a fourth wheel. Recently the three-wheel configuration has been appearing in various forms of vehicles, from the space-age Aptera to the a-bit-more-than-a-motorcycle Piaggio Mp3 . With this seeming flood of tricycles sloshing about one question needs a clear answer: “Why do so many green cars only have three wheels?” As you might imagine there are a variety of possible reasons why one would design a vehicle this way. Hit the jump to take a tricycular journey to find out why. Gallery: Aptera 2e Continue reading Greenlings: Why do so many green cars have only three wheels? eBay find of the day: Hymotion Plug-in Prius
Click above for high-res image gallery of the Hymotion Prius The current bid for the plug-in Prius you see above is $21,100, but the pesky reserve price has not yet been met. Considering the $10,000 price tag for the Hymotion plug-in conversion kit that this vehicle sports, someone might be able to get a really good deal on a PHEV, especially considering that this Prius is pretty loaded, with a leather trimmed interior, a navigation system and a backup camera. This 2007 Prius only has 14,800 miles on it and the warranty on the Hymotion pack that lasts for another 35 months (until January 2012). The seller is Green Motors and, according to a sticker on the battery pack , the conversion was done last month by our friends over at Green Gears . The car was in an front end collision, but, to give bidders some piece of mind, Green Motors is offering test drives to anyone who can get out to Berkeley before the auction ends in four days. Thanks to Paul G. for the tip! eBay Find of the Day: Electrified 1984 Honda Civic wagon
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Green Culture , Honda Click above for a gallery of the electric Honda Civic on eBay Tired of waiting for a major automaker to offer an electric vehicle ? We feel your pain. In the meantime, there are quite a few outlets that would be happy to build one for you using an existing vehicle as a platform to start with. Such is the case with this 1984 Honda Civic wagon . The car has been completely restored and it appears exactly as you’d expect a model of its vintage to look, on the outside at least. A quick glance under the hood, though, will reveal that it’s got no engine. Instead of a gasoline-burning four cylinder powerplant, this Civic has been converted to electric drive using a 6.7″ electric motor from Advanced DC, an 800 amp controller and 12 Energizer GC8 8-volt lead acid batteries. According to the team that performed the conversion, this electrified Civic can safely travel over 40 miles under decent conditions. The transmission is still hooked up, though it’s not really necessary to use all the gears. Judging from the images, everything looks like it’s been done extremely well, and it’s nice to see small shops like this jumping into the EV game. VIDEO: All aboard the Aptera tour with co-founder Steve Fambro
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Lightweight , Aptera , USA Click above for a high res gallery of the Aptera 2e Josh , the Aptera 2e fan who has been recently hanging out in parking garages and generally going camera crazy in his quest to slake the thirst of his ApteraForum friends, hit the devotee motherlode the other day at TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design). Yes, he got chauffeured about Long Beach, California by Steve Fambro, co-founder and current CTO of the start up vehicle company, who not only answered his questions without swearing him to secrecy, but even let him record the whole event on video. Steve talked a lot about the Automaptics system installed in the 2e and said it was something they were evaluating, as he repeatedly touched the screen and talked about various vehicle to grid ( V2G ) options and accessing the 2e through the internet. From this drive, as well as from a hastily-called meet-and-greet with future Aptera owners held the next evening, we were able to learn the vehicle is set to undergo even more changes before it starts production. For one, the wheelspan is set to be reduced by six inches. The suspension geometry is also set to undergo some revision and some changes may be made to the body to better deal with crosswinds. Hit the jump for the video. Renault adds eco branding to low-end Dacia lineup
Auto Blog: Diesel , Ethanol , Flex-Fuel , Natural Gas Following in the path formed by just about every other European automaker, Renault is expanding its eco 2 branding to its low-end Dacia brand. The eco 2 branding refers to special low-CO 2 emissions variants. In this case, Dacia will offer special versions of the Sandero and Logan. Both models will be available with an LPG-fueled 1.4L engine and the Logan will also be offered with a 1.6L LPG engine. The Logan and Sandero can also be optioned with a 1.2L gas engine that gets 40 mpg (U.S.) and 139 g/km of CO 2 emissions. Sandero buyers can also go for a flex-fuel E85 capable 1.6L engine. Finally, 70 or 85 hp diesel engines are also available. [Source: Renault ] Renault adds eco 2 branding to low-end Dacia lineup originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 04 Feb 2009 19:23:00 EST. It’s Friday: Making roadkill live again through recycling
Auto Blog: Etc. , Green Culture , North America It’s bound to happen. If you travel very many miles, especially at night, it’s quite likely you’ll create roadkill . Even some of the expert drivers here at AutoblogGreen have taken the life of a street-crossing animal (I’m sooo sorry , Mr. or Mrs. Bunny, I tried to miss, I really tried.) While different areas have different ways of dealing with this all-too-common occurrance, today we focus on the amazing art of Amy Nugent (no relation to Ted ). The Canadian artist brings some life back to hapless victims of the tarmac by using their bits to create everything from very nice bracelets (above) to wall hangings. The off-beat source of her inspiration came to her while traveling Canadian highways that are often the final resting place of many a poor-sighted porcupine. Having heard of their quills being used by indigenous peoples for utilitarian and decorative purposes, she decided that she wanted to “resurrect this stuff that we just pancake out there.” And so she began her quest with simple cuffs and has progressed to much more refined pieces that she markets under the brand name, wait for it, ” Roadquill .” [Source: Canadian Press ] It’s Friday: Making roadkill live again through recycling originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Fri, 30 Jan 2009 17:56:00 EST.
