Jetta TDI proving tough to find in California

Click above for high-res image gallery of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI In the minds of those in charge of voting for automotive awards , it seems that the new Volkswagen Jetta TDI can do no wrong . Perhaps the same can be said of new car purchasers, depending on where that buyer happens to live. Apparently, the German automaker can’t keep up with demand in a number of areas because of the way the vehicles are allocated to dealerships. At least one VW employee from California who had placed his order way back in 2008 is being told he won’t get his new car until late April or early May. In contrast, there is reportedly no wait at all in Washington, D.C. That unnamed employee says, “I could probably go there to buy one, but what am I going to do, drive it all the way back to California?” Think of the bright side… at least it would be a fuel efficient road trip. In the AutoblogGreen Garage: 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Click the Camry hybrid for a high res gallery Automotive desirability is a strange thing. If you ask any statistically significant number of people to choose any car they desired, surely a large number of them would name Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins or some other exotic breed. And yet these cars sell in only the low tens of thousands annually world wide. Surely a car that sells over 400,000 units every single year must also have some degree of desirability. No doubt it does, but there is a difference. The exotic appeals to the most basic animal instincts in the reptilian brain. The Toyota Camry appeals to the rational, logical brain that looks for durable, reliable, affordable personal transportation. Its about desiring the things you want vs. the things you need. The Camry has been the best-selling car in the United States for the past decade. Even with an eight percent drop in a miserable 2008, Toyota still found buyers for 436,617 examples. Globally, Toyota sold 52,479 hybrid Camrys last year most of which went to North American buyers. One way to sell nearly half a million units of any car is by creating something that doesn’t turn people off. Car Blog Greenon after the jump to find out if the Camry hybrid has anything to turn buyers on. Better Place CEO says he needs the Big Three

Click above and scroll down to watch the video Need a quick update on Better Place? World Focus has a five-minute video that features interviews with founder Shai Agassi, video of the cars testing in Israel and skeptics like Forbes’ Bruce Upbin, weighing in on the electric car startup. The clip says that Better Place promises they could have their EV chargin network in place across the U.S. by 2012, given enough government and automaker support. In its home country, Israel, Better Place plans to have several hundred thousands charging stations installed in two years. As we’ve heard , Better Place is in discussions with more than 25 countries, plus many major automakers and local partners, to expand their program. It sounds like they’re going to need the help, as this notable quote from Agassi makes clear: “We’re not against Detroit. We’re for Detroit. Without the Detroit Three going out and producing millions of cars, electric cars, that fit this model, we don’t get the U.S. off of oil.” Thanks to Rain for the tip! In the AutoblogGreen Garage: 2009 Lexus GS450h

Auto Blog: Hybrid , Lexus , In The AutoblogGreen Garage Click the Lexus GS450h for a high res gallery Since debuting the Prius just over a decade ago, Toyota has been gradually spreading its hybrid drive technology through its product lineup including the Lexus brand. Later this year, Lexus will be getting its first hybrid-only model in the form of the HS250h but it’s first hybrid sedan was actually the GS450h which went on sale as a 2007 model. As with the LS600h that we tried out a year ago , the GS450h is promoted by Toyota as option that gives performance of a larger engine with the efficiency of a lower displacement. So, unlike the Prius which goes for the big mpg numbers, the Lexus hybrids post more typical results for their segments. As a mid-sized luxury sport sedan, the GS falls into a segment with competitors such as the BMW 5-series, the Mercedes Benz E-Class and the Acura TL . All four of these are very close in overall size, although the Lexus is the only one with a hybrid powertrain option. Based on the nomenclature, Lexus expects the GS450h to have performance similar to the vehicle with a 4.5L V8 with the efficiency of a 3.5L V6. Follow the jump to see if they succeeded. Auto Blog: Diesel , Volkswagen , In The AutoblogGreen Garage , USA Click above for high-res image gallery of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI The car as we know it is being redefined. Hybrids have reintroduced electrons to the driving experience, and the rumble, shake and shimmy of internal combustion engines is being muffled and, in some cases, even silenced by cars like the Toyota Prius, 2011 Chevy Volt and Tesla Roadster. For us to continue harnessing the energy of combustion under our hoods, we need to go much farther on a gallon of fuel. Enter Volkswagen and the diesel-powered passenger cars it’s been selling in the U.S. since the late ’70s, the latest of which is the 2009 Jetta TDI. Follow the jump to find out how VW’s newest diesel fares against the electrified future of the automobile. Rumormill: Lexus LS could get base V6 model

Auto Blog: Lexus Click above for a high-res gallery of the Lexus LS600h The trend towards more fuel efficient automobiles is stretching past its expected economy car roots and into the upper reaches of large luxury vehicles. It could be argued that Lexus started this particular trend with its range of hybrid vehicles, especially the GS 450h and the LS 600h premium sedans. Perhaps the biggest hurdle Lexus needs to overcome to sell its hybrids is their price, since all that extra doohickery adds plenty to the bottom line. Perhaps it’s not surprising, then, to hear rumors that Lexus is working on a new version of its LS flagship that will use Toyota’s 2GR-FSE 3.5L V6 engine engine in lieu of the pricey hybrid or thirsty V8 options. We’d assume the new model would be named the LS 350. This particular powerplant has won accolades by combining both port fuel injection and direct injection to produce up to 311 horsepower (315 PS or 232 kW) and is already used in the automaker’s IS 350 and GS 350. This engine option in the LS would also allow buyers in some countries to avoid high taxes that are based on the powerplant’s displacement. In the AutoblogGreen Garage: 2009 Chevy Aveo 5

Auto Blog: Chevrolet , In The AutoblogGreen Garage Click above for high-res image gallery of the 2009 Chevy Aveo 5 Until the new Chevy Spark here in 2011, the entry point for getting into the General Motors product line-up remains the Chevy Aveo. The Korean-built Aveo is available in two forms, a four-door sedan and five-door hatch. The hatchback is dubbed the Aveo 5, an example of which spent some time in the AutoblogGreen Garage during the week following the Detroit Auto Show . This is the first opportunity we’ve had to sample the Aveo and it turned out to be something of a mixed bag. The Aveo 5 is the smallest model in the current North American GM lineup and fits into the sub-compact B-Segment. Dimensionally the Aveo slots in between the Toyota Yaris and Honda Fit and almost matches the Scion xD. Until the Ford Fiesta arrives late this year, the Fit is generally considered the overachiever in this class. Find out how the Aveo 5 stacks up against the Fit after the jump.
