Canada wants North American fuel efficiency standard

Canada’s Environment Minister Jim Prentice believes that there should be a single fuel efficiency standard for all countries in North America. He says, “At this point in the United States, it would appear as though they are headed toward a 35 mile a gallon standard by 2020 and that would start to come into effect in the 2011 model year. We’ve essentially been prepared to go in that same direction.” That 35 mpg standard is good enough for Canada if it’s good enough for the United States, right? It makes sense for automakers that sell their products across all of North America, especially to the U.S. domestic manufacturers that build hundreds of thousands of cars in Canada and Mexico each year. It’s not perfect, though, as California is moving to create its own fuel economy standards under the guise of greenhouse gas emissions regulations. “The first thing that has to happen, however, is that the United States has to land with their own domestic policy. It’s by no means clear how this will emerge from Congress over the course of the next year,” Prentice said. Better Place announces 19 "Vision Partners" (aka early buyers) in Israel

Click on the image above for a gallery of Better Place images “Vision Partner” sure has a nice ring to it. So positive, so optimistic, and so perfect a name for Better Place’s new partners in Israel. Better Place announced this week that it has agreements with 19 companies who want to support Better Place’s plug-in vehicle/infrastructure project by being the first to buy the cars when they become commercially available in 2011. Better Place founder and CEO says that these agreements prove “that there is a real demand for electric cars powered by the Better Place network.” The Jerusalem Post lists 13 of the companies : Israel Corporation, Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries, Partner Communications, Pelephone Communications, Orange Communications, Matrix IT, Direct Insurance, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, Netafim, Keter Plastics, Orbotech, Manpower Israel, and Glasshouse Technologies. Globes also names Jafora Tabori, SQlink, and Nike Israel as partners. We’re trying to find the names of the other three. Mitsubishi i MiEV hopes to hang out in Hong Kong

As Mitsubishi prepares for its electric car, the i MiEV , to go on sale this summer in Japan and the UK, more territories wishing to try it out on their own streets are coming forward. We can now add the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, known to most of us simply as “Hong Kong,” to a list that includes Finland , New Zealand and the U.S . Universal Cars Ltd, the Hong Kong distributor for MiMoCo, signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoU) with the Environment Bureau today that could see the little electric jellybean rolling down Hong Kong Streets by May. The trial is seen as a precursor to the vehicle being offered for sale there and will examine such issues as market acceptability and the “suitability of the charging infrastructure.” China is also home to several automakers with their own electric car ambitions. BYD is supposed to begin selling its all-electric e6 later this year and Chery just revealed a prototype of their S18 . Press release after the break. Diesel-powered Carbon E7 police car to go on sale in 2012

Auto Blog: Diesel , Legislation and Policy , USA Click on the image above for a high-res image gallery of the Carbon Motors E7 Police officers are scheduled to have a much more fuel efficient choice beginning in 2012 when Carbon Motors finally introduces its E7 to the eager market. As it stands right now, most police cruisers come from Ford Motor Company, which modifies its aging Crown Victoria platform for the heavy duty workload with an uprated suspension and slightly higher state of engine tune. A dedicated platform seems to make a good bit more sense, so it’s a little surprising it took this long for something to materialize. The good thing about the long wait, though, is that the new E7 will be a fully modern machine, featuring lightweight aluminum unibody chassis architecture and a 3.0L turbocharged diesel engine with 300 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. That should amount to a vehicle that is much more fuel efficient than its predecessors, with Carbon estimating a figure of 28-30 miles per gallon in combined driving. The capability of accelerating to 60 in just 6.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 155 miles per hour is icing on the cake. The seats two, should get 150 mpge, has “full safety features” and its designers are confident it can do well in the Auto X Prize . Toyota offering rebates on 2009 Prius

Auto Blog: Hybrid , Toyota , USA Despite the horribly irritating ad campaign, it turns out that Toyota was not quite “Saved by Zero.” In fact, the automaker actually lost market share during the period that it was offering zero-percent financing deals on many of its most popular models, leading many dealers to call for good old-fashioned cash incentives instead. Toyota’s been listening and has announced a series of cash-back bonuses, including on the midsize Camry, compact Corolla and even the 2009 Prius hybrid. Of course, big trucks get in on the rebate game, garnering rebates of up to $4,000 depending on the model year, but the Prius’ $750 incentive may be enough to get a few consumers off the fence ahead of the redesigned 2010 model . With stiff competition on the way from the Honda Insight as well as the Ford Fusion Hybrid , Toyota will likely need to work harder that it has in the past to move its hybrid hatch.
