2009 Jetta TDI Cup to run on B5 biodiesel
Click the Jettas for a high res gallery from VIRginia International Raceway Volkswagen’s Jetta TDI Cup series will be returning to the racetracks of North America at the end of April with 30 diesel-powered sedans in the hands of young up and coming drivers. For this year’s sophomore season Volkswagen will be filling the tanks of the Jettas with B5 biodiesel. Houston, Texas-based Hyperfuels will be supplying the 5 percent biofuel blend for the cars which will consume about two tankfuls of fuel over the course of 10 races. The Syndiesel supplied by Hyperfuels has a 10 year shelf life addressing one of the biggest issues with some biodiesels, the tendency to go rancid after a period of time in storage. Volkswagen has approved B5 for use in all regular production diesel VW and Audi models. Just as it did last year, the Jetta TDI cup kicks off at VIRginia International Raceway April 24-26. Volkswagen Canada shows 2010 Rabbit TDI at Toronto Auto Show
We learned from Volkswagen last September that the redesigned 2010 MK VI Rabbit would be offered in TDI trim. Volkswagen has yet to show the MK VI Rabbit/Golf here in the U.S., but it did turn up in Toronto this week at the Canadian International Auto Show. A poster over the VW Vortex forums snapped a few camera phone pics of the new model, which isn’t radically different from the MK V. The biggest change, as we’ve already seen from Europe, is the new face that will be seen on other new VWs over the next few years. Under the hood, the Rabbit has the same 2.0L four-cylinder diesel that’s in the Jetta with 140 hp. The same choice of 6-speed manual or DSG transmission is expected to appear in the Rabbit, as well. The Rabbit should be at U.S. dealerships in the fall. Thanks to Jay for the tip! Chicago 2009: Jetta TDI wins Motor Week’s Drivers Choice "Best of Year" Award
Click to enlarge The Jetta TDI has won the Popular Mechanics’ Automotive Excellence Award , the Green Car Journal’s 2009 Green Car of the Year and, today in Chicago, Motor Week’s Driver’s Choice Award for the “Best of the Year.” Not a bad four months for the German diesel. The car also took home Motor Week’s “Best Eco-Friendly” title, while the Honda Fit won for “Best Small Car.” Don’t think the Jetta TDI is unstoppable; it lost the 2009 North American Car of the Year crown to the Hyundai Genesis last month in Detroit. Motor Week will air a special 2009 MotorWeek Drivers’ Choice Awards episode starting Friday ( check local listings for exact time) with 14 categories. You can click past the jump to see which cars and trucks won what awards and click here to see what we thought about driving the 2009 Jetta TDI for ourselves.
