Bolloré courts Evo Morales and Bolivia’s lithium

French industry giant Group Bolloré, which we’re familar with for their involvement with Pininfarina in a handful of interesting electric car projects, announced it has contacted Bolivian President Evo Morales to secure a supply of lithium in order to produce advanced batteries. Negotiations have been in the works for more than a year to guarantee access to what is estimated to be half of the total lithium resources in the world, located in Salar de Uyuni. Bolloré is competing against Japan’s Mitsubishi. One of the questions that arose during these negotiations was Morales’s demand that a complete EV industry be established in Bolivia, instead of just simple mining facilities. Morales is currently visiting France on an official visit. Attention Wal-Mart shoppers: Electric cars marked down on aisle 6

Auto Blog: Miles EV , South/Latin America , USA , BYD Might your next (first?) electric vehicle purchase be transacted at Wal-Mart ? It’s not out of realm of possibility. Mexican company, GS Motors, is already selling 3 different models from China’s First Auto Works ( FAW ) at a so-called “big box” retail chain in Mexico and has plans to replicate the strategy north of their border. Company CEO Kathleen Ligocki says, “I think the product will be ready for the U.S. market within five years.” Starting next year, the Chinese designs are expected to be assembled at a factory in Michoacan, Mexico that will be capable of building 100,000 units per annum. FAW, if you’re keeping score, is the company the makes the NEV sold as the ZX40 by Miles Automotive . Now, we’re not suggesting that Miles is currently involved in any talks with GS Motors, only that the connection is there. FAW is not the only Chinese automaker looking for an American foothold either. Well known to our readers, BYD is another company with somewhat desirable electric cars and a commitment to compete in the U.S. Their retail sales strategy has yet to be revealed, but we can only imagine they would explore different options. As for the American big box stores, would they consider selling electric cars? Wal Mart said it would and Sam’s already has . Washington 2009: Riding in the Chrysler EVs [w/VIDEO]

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Chrysler , Dodge , Jeep , AutoblogGreen Exclusive , Green Daily , Washington DC Auto Show Click above and scroll down to watch the video People are rightly skeptical about whether or not the Chrysler electric vehicles will ever make it to market. For now, all we can say for sure is that some of Chrysler’s EV prototypes can go for a spin around the Washington DC Convention Center. We were able to go for a ride in the Dodge EV and the Jeep ER-EV with Crysler’s Douglas Quigley, executive of product engineering for ENVI (the Chrysler electric vehicle “start up” ) when we were in town last week, and you can see our video of the rides (no drives yet, sadly) after the jump. Quigley said that it is not Chrysler’s intention to sell 100,000 of the Dodge EVs a year. You can roll your own joke about that, but his explanation was that the battery pack that is good for 150 miles will be expensive and therefore the target audience is someone who wants to cruise through the city or on the track for a few hours on the weekend. He’s got a lot more to say about these two vehicles in the video, including how they’re being used for testing in Arizona, what might make it into a possible production version and how fun it is to drive the Lotus Europa-based Dodge EV. Coming: Cheap Chinese Cars at Costco?

Chinese cars have been displayed at the Detroit Auto Show for the past several years. Many industry critics ridiculed them for design or quality flaws. But others see these first Chinese vehicles and remember how Japanese and Korean cars were once laughed off—only to become mainstream products in America. Kathleen Ligocki, CEO of GS Motors and formerly president of Ford of Mexico, expects Chinese-designed cars to begin production in Mexico in 2010—and make their way to the US about five years after first testing the waters in Latin America and Canada. GS Motors, a Mexican company, already imports three models from China’s First Auto Works (FAW) and sold 4,000 of them in Mexico last year. Here’s the zinger: Ligocki believes Chinese cars will be sold in the US through big-box stores like Costco or Wal-Mart, which is how GS Motors is retailing them in Mexico. GS is building an assembly plant in Michoacan, Mexico with FAW. The plan is for vehicles to roll off the line beginning in 2010. GS Motors will launch the FAW brand in Mexico this year with the F1 Hatchback, an entry-level car sold for under $5,500. FAW, one of the largest Chinese automakers, is allied in China with Volkswagen. FAW also produces the Miles ZX40, a small van-style neighborhood electric vehicle, developed by Miles Electric Vehicles , based on Santa Monica, Calif. GS Motors is racing to bring the first Chinese cars to America via Mexico—but they are not alone. BYD (Build Your Dreams) showed plug-in hybrid and electric model in Detroit last month and promised to bring them to the US as early as next year. In fact, many of China’s 80 or so auto companies have made similar gestures, with varying degrees of seriousness. read more

Brazilian company Maxi-Eco to enter Auto X Prize

Auto Blog: Emerging Technologies , Ethanol , Flex-Fuel , Automotive X-Prize , South/Latin America When the Automotive X-Prize announced its competition, and especially the $10 million in prize money that goes along with it, we figured that plenty of small, relatively unknown companies would enter the proceedings. They have . The good news is that this is exactly the point of the event – to stimulate innovation in a rational, usable manner. Of course, some are more oddball than others, but we digress. One new competitor called Maxi-Eco appears to be coming by way of Brazil with a new flex-fuel axial engine design that it believes will handily outperform the 100 mile per gallon equivalent rating that the competition calls for. The firm had considered going the hybrid route, but has since decided that its patent pending engine technology will be fine without it. At this point, the engine resides in a Lotus 7 knockoff, but the team will enter the X-Prize competition with an undetermined production car chassis fitted with its unique powerplant. Thanks for the tip, Gustavo ! [Source: MotorTips ] Brazilian company Maxi-Eco to enter Auto X Prize originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Fri, 30 Jan 2009 20:01:00 EST. Environmental group launches anti-Dakar Rally campaign

Auto Blog: Etc. , South/Latin America This year, the famous Dakar Rally has moved to South America because of security issues in its previous home in Africa. The race usually showcases the latest in all-road racing technology – diesel vehicles are doing well this year – but there’s also the question of what is the real environmental impact of the race. One of Spain’s most important environmental groups, Ecologistas en Acción , has asked the Rally to be finished early because of the environmental damage that more than 800 all-terrain vehicles are performing: for each 1,000 km of off-road motoring, one hectare (about 2.5 acres) is eroded. Then there is the high fuel consumption, noise and the general promotion of this type of “sport.” Ecologistas en Acción thinks that the spirit of adventure and discovery themes of the adventure hide all too well the reality of big-engined vehicles running on heavyset frames through a natural environment.
