Geneva Preview: 37 mpg (U.S.) Lexus RX 450h CUV
Click above for a high res gallery of the RX 450h When we first met the RX 450h hybrid CUV – excuse me, the “car-based luxury utility vehicle,” during the LA Auto Show last November, Lexus wouldn’t say what mileage the vehicle would get. Now that we’re a bit closer to the release date and the CUV’s European debut at the Geneva Motor Show this week, Lexus has announced that the RX 450h gets 44.8 mpg (37 mpg U.S.) on the combined cycle, an improvement of 28 percent. Combine that with CO 2 emissions of 148 grams per km, and Lexus has a numbers to brag about. The RX 450h goes on sale in the UK this summer. We’ll get more details on the European debut from Geneva this coming week. Rumormill: Lexus LS could get base V6 model
Auto Blog: Lexus Click above for a high-res gallery of the Lexus LS600h The trend towards more fuel efficient automobiles is stretching past its expected economy car roots and into the upper reaches of large luxury vehicles. It could be argued that Lexus started this particular trend with its range of hybrid vehicles, especially the GS 450h and the LS 600h premium sedans. Perhaps the biggest hurdle Lexus needs to overcome to sell its hybrids is their price, since all that extra doohickery adds plenty to the bottom line. Perhaps it’s not surprising, then, to hear rumors that Lexus is working on a new version of its LS flagship that will use Toyota’s 2GR-FSE 3.5L V6 engine engine in lieu of the pricey hybrid or thirsty V8 options. We’d assume the new model would be named the LS 350. This particular powerplant has won accolades by combining both port fuel injection and direct injection to produce up to 311 horsepower (315 PS or 232 kW) and is already used in the automaker’s IS 350 and GS 350. This engine option in the LS would also allow buyers in some countries to avoid high taxes that are based on the powerplant’s displacement. Lexus moves the IS 220d’s CO emission levels down a notch
Auto Blog: Diesel , Lexus , UK From 163 g/km last year to 148g/km now, Lexus has upgraded the green credentials of the IS 220d. This vehicle is now more fuel efficient, which makes it all the more interesting for fleet purchasers in the United Kingdom. First of all, the VED (Vehicle Excise Duty) for the car drops to band C, which only saves you £25 per year, but can save more money thanks to lower Benefit-in-Kind company car tax rates and the allowance companies can write down against the Corporation Tax. The IS 220d’s fuel economy goes from 46.3 to 50.4 mpg Imperial (38.5 mpg U.S. or 6.1 l/km to 42 mpg U.S. or 5.6 l/100 km). How? Well, IS isn’t a simple econobox; it comes with a diesel 2.2-liter I4 that, mated to a manual 6-speed manual, produces 175hp at 3,600rpm and 400Nm of torque (295 lb/ft), going to 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in 8.9 seconds. Prices starts at £22,015. Full press release after the jump. Ethanol leads to recall of some Lexus models
Auto Blog: Etc. , Ethanol , Lexus , Green Daily Click on the image above for a high-res gallery of the LS460 Ethanol fuel with low moisture content has the potential to corrode the inside of the fuel delivery pipes in some Lexus vehicles, including GS300/350, IS250/350, and LS460/460L models from 2006, 2007 and 2008 model years. The problem, which can create a pinhole leak in the pipes, has caused Lexus to announce a safety recall of about 214,500 vehicles. First-class letters will be sent to Lexus owners who might have vehicles that may be affected by this problem, and Lexus dealers will replace, at no charge, their pipes with newly-designed components. No other Lexus or Toyota vehicles are part of this recall. There’s a phone number after the jump to call if you have questions. Gorgeous Tesla Hot Wheels, batteries not included
Auto Blog: Etc. , EV/Plug-in , Tesla Motors , AutoblogGreen Exclusive , Green Daily Click on the new more affordable Tesla Roadsters for a high res gallery Can’t come up with enough cash to afford your own Tesla Roadster? No worries, we’ve got just the thing, and they promise to emit absolutely zero emissions during use: Tesla Hot Wheels cars. We managed to get our hands on two of the diminutive little buggers, and we’ve assembled a gallery below for your perusal. The models you see here, which are painted in Metallic Aqua with a black interior and Metallic Watermelon with a saddle brown interior, represent two of the three available colors when the Hot Wheels car was initially launched; the third is painted Metalflake Silver with a black interior. We hear that a fourth model was released for the Valentine’s Day collection that’s painted a darker shade of gray. The models look fairly accurate, as they should since Mattel reportedly had access to electronic files of the Roadster from Tesla. Thanks for the tip, Shaun ! Detroit 2009: Fuel cells, a "promising solution," come to Cobo Hall
Auto Blog: Hydrogen , Detroit Auto Show , Green Daily Photo of a retro fuel cell vehicle by jurvetson . Licensed under Creative Commons license 2.0. Even though the SAE World Congress last year featured a seminar titled, ” The Problems of Fuel Cell Commercialization ,” the SAE is putting a positive spin on fuel cells for the public at this year’s Detroit Auto Show . Tomorrow, for example, the SAE International’s A World In Motion program will kick off the Fuel Cell Challenge; in the press release announcement, SAE calls fuel cells a “promising solution.” The challenge is meant to get middle-school kids across America to think about fuel cells; it’s likely that we’ll get more details after the press conference at 10 a.m. Wednesday. A World In Motion is a curriculum that explains physical science with “essential mathematic and scientific concepts and skills.” More details after the jump. Europe won’t get the Lexus HS250h
Auto Blog: Hybrid , Lexus , European Union Click the HS250h for a high res gallery It looks like Japanese and American consumers will be the only ones that get access to the new Lexus HS250h, at least through normal distribution channels. Toyota’s European communications chief Serge Gachot told Automotive News after the reveal of the HS250h that the new hybrid will not be imported into Europe. Apparently, the HS does not have a significant advantage in CO 2 emissions over the diesel-powered IS220d, which is already available there. The IS220d is rated at 163 g/km and the new hybrid model, which is similar in size, would be in the same ball park. Given the tough market right now and the fact that Toyota is expected to post its first loss in seven decades this year, the cost of certifying a redundant model doesn’t make sense. With the greater appeal of hybrids in North America and Japan, the HS would probably do better here. Detroit 2009: Toyota’s iQ based FT-EV concept to hit production in 2012
Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Hybrid , Toyota , Detroit Auto Show In addition to the new third generation Prius and it’s sibling the Lexus HS250h, Toyota will be showing a battery electric concept here in Detroit called the FT-EV. As previously suspected, the car is based on Toyota’s new iQ mini-car. Prior to the opening of the show, Toyota sent out a press release with some news about its electric vehicle plans. Toyota is planning a production launch of an urban battery electric vehicle by 2012, based on this concept. In addition to the FT-EV, Toyota will be delivering 150 plug-in hybrid Priuses late this year to US based fleet customers for testing. Those will be part of a 500 vehicle fleet worldwide. The new Prius has been designed accomodate either the nickel metal hydride batteries that will in the regular production version or new lithium ion batteries as used in the plug-in. The full press release is after the jump. New Upcoming Lexus HS 250h hybrid spied for the first time!
Toyota’s Lexus brand is on the cutting edge of green luxury motoring, and the Japanese automaker has no plans to give up that distinction any time soon. Lexus will debut two new hybrid-only models at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show — a yet to be named model based on the Toyota Prius and a more sedan-like HS 250h — the latter of which our spies have spotted for the first time! Lexus will show an all-new hybrid model at January’s Detroit Auto Show, tentatively dubbed the HS250h. Earlier reports had the HS250h pegged as the Lexus-badged Prius model, but it is now clear that the HS250h will be a separate sedan model. The HS250h is closely linked to Toyota’s upcoming ‘SAI’ model – internally named the 500L – which should be the first vehicle in Toyota’s new Prius brand, slotting between the current Prius and the Camry Hybrid. Both models will take on a more sedan-like body style than the standard Prius but will still use a Prius-derived nickel metal hydride battery pack. Powertrains remain unclear, but our sources indicate either a 2.0L or a 2.5L four-cylinder has been earmarked for the new model. The 250 moniker would seem to indicate the 2.5L, but Lexus hybrid nameplates tend to exaggerate engine displacement (as in the 5.0L LS600h). To differentiate itself from the lesser Toyota model, the HS250h will feature an onboard computer system similar to BMW’s iDrive, LED lights and plenty of luxury amenities. The Lexus HS250h is expected to begin production in Japan in July 2009, with the Toyota model following a few months later in November. Check back for more details and live image of the HS250h after the Detroit show kicks off next month.
