Click above and scroll down to watch the video While perhaps not as spectacular as San Francisco getting a fancy Smartlet charging station in front of City Hall , the addition of two charging posts at Truckee Meadows Community College in Northern Nevada are a welcome addition to the nations slowly-growing charging infrastructure. The posts, which use a traditional parking meter interface and ask for only 10 cents an hour, are getting put to good use, as we learned from a bit of video by the local NBC affiliate, KRNV. As interesting as the posts were, the station found one of the vehicles regularly using them was just as interesting: a 1991 GMC Van. Around the time GM was refining the Impact prototype that would go on to become the EV1 , some GMC vans were built with an electric drivetrain for the Department of Defense, according to the vehicle’s owner (Southern California Edison got some too). Able to go 70 miles on a charge, the vehicle requires little maintenance and its driver seems very happy with his old EV ride. If you are thinking that you’d like a van like this yourself, you may be in luck. A nice looking 1989 copy is listed on the EV Album by someone who says, “I’m considering selling this, contact me with offer.” If that doesn’t pan out and you’re good with a wrench, there’s another in need of extreme TLC on eBay for the next few days. Here’s a benefit to living with dirty air in Texas: getting $5,000 off the price of your plug-in hybrid vehicle. That’s the amount being proposed in the state legislature and supported by Gov. Rick Perry. In the governor’s state of the state speech last night, Perry said , “I support giving Texans in the non-attainment areas of our state a $5,000 incentive towards a purchase of Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles, using the funds Texans have already paid to reduce emissions, while providing a unique way to store wind energy.” The phrase “non-attainment areas” refers to a place “where air pollution levels persistently exceed National Ambient Air Quality Standards, or that contributes to ambient air quality in a nearby area that fails to meet standards.” So, if you live where there’s dirty air, and this proposal passes, and the Chevy Volt ever appears in your local dealer lot, then you could get $12,500 off the sticker price, thanks to government help . Perry was a strong supporter of building a coal gassification plant in Texas. Auto Blog: Etc. , Green Daily Could your next mode of transportation be on a flying saucer ? It all depends on who you ask. Direct that question towards Alfie Carrington of Clinton Township, Michigan, and you’ll get a resounding “yes.” Carrington, a construction worker by day, hopes that the UFO he’s been building in his garage qualifies him to receive $250,000 from the Feds as part of the much larger auto bailout program. A small price to pay to ween ourselves from petroleum use, right? We’d bet against him, but stranger things have happened. What would the money be used for? To create the flying saucer’s powertrain, which would reportedy use spinning discs that produce an unlimited supply of electricity that would be fed to batteries. A set of air ducts would be used to control the carbon fiber frisbee’s flight path. That’s rather vague, admittedly, but perpetual power sounds perfect for a flying saucer to us.
