Toyota announces 150 plug-in Prius hybrids are coming to Europe in 2009

Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2010 Toyota Prius Toyota Motor Europe CEO Tadashi Arashima has announced that Europe will get 150 plug-in Priuses this year, followed by another 350 in 2010. These PHEV units will be used for testing purposes and will not be available for the masses. Even better news from ToMoCo: 2012 will see the introduction of an all-electric vehicle. Toyota could use the plug-in help to meet its self-set goal of average corporate CO 2 emissions of 140 g/km, including Lexus offerings, this year and drop to between 120 and 130 g/km before the mandatory limit comes dues in 2015 . Arashima also said that, since the price of diesel cars will climb significantly with the introduction of the Euro V and VI anti-pollution rules, diesel vehicles won’t be as attractive to buyers who might also consider a hybrid vehicle. He did acknowledge that diesels will continue to be significant in European markets. Geneva 2009: Honda Accord Tourer Type-S

Click the Accord tourer for a high res gallery The car pictured above represents some of my favorite features in a main-stream car: it’s a wagon and it’s a diesel. I’m also fully aware that I am in a distinct minority on both counts among drivers in the U.S. market. This is the new European-market Honda Accord Tourer Type-S. We get the sedan version in the U.S., badged as the Acura TSX. Personally, I prefer the wagon version because it retains the overall size and dynamic characteristics of a sedan while adding a huge dollop of utility when needed. It’s also quite a handsome car. Rumor has it we’ll see this body style appear as a new Honda CUV in the states this fall with the high-riding Outback treatment. The wagon is not new to Europe but the new Type-S (also available as a sedan) is. The Type-S Accord gets a 178 hp version of Honda’s new iDTEC 2.2L diesel four cylinder with a stiff 280 lb-ft of torque. The Type-S gets larger 18″ wheels and bumper and sill extensions for a more aggressive look. Unfortunately, this is very likely the car we were supposed to get as a TSX this year. However, market conditions have forced Honda to indefinitely cancel those plans. What a shame. Gallery: Geneva 2009: Honda Accord Tourer Type-S Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc. January 2009 Dashboard: Hybrid Pickups Arrive

> Subscribe to the HybridCars.com Market Dashboard The entire auto market continued to slide, bringing hybrid sales along with it. But there’s good news: General Motors began shipping full-hybrid pickup trucks, opening up the hybrid market to a new pool of buyers. Hybrid Heatmap In this month’s version, we take a look at sales of hybrids produced exclusively by domestic automakers: GM, Ford and Chrysler. With the emergence of hybrid pickup trucks, we wondered if buyers of domestic hybrids were coming from a different part of the country than the larger hybrid market. After adjusting the sales numbers based on population, we see that California remains a hotspot—but the Midwest is stronger while much of the Northeast (except for the DC area) shows less hybrid popularity. Analysis of January 2009 Sales Numbers "Top 5 global hybrid markets" based on vehicle registrations CYTD November 2008. and "Top 5 US hybrid markets" based on vehicle registrations CYTD November 2008. The beginning of 2009 was much like the end of 2008 for auto markets: showrooms stayed quiet, credit remained tight, and sales continued to slide. Overall, auto sales were down 38 percent compared with last January; brands like General Motors and Chrysler saw more severe declines as their volumes were cut in half. Although hybrids outperformed the market slightly, sales of hybrid models were still far below typical levels. read more

tests 2-wheelers for the first time since ’81

Auto Blog: On Two Wheels Click above for a gallery of the Vespa S 150 In the wake of record high gas prices last summer, sales of scooters and small-bore motorcycles shot through the roof as consumers who were unable to unload their gas-guzzlers looked for any possible way to save a few bucks on their commuting needs. In order to serve this new segment of the market properly, Consumer Reports announced that it would study the market and look into new testing procedures for 2-wheelers, which the popular magazine stopped testing way back in 1981. As promised, the first in what we hope will be a series of tests will be included in CR’s March ’09 edition and will also be available to online subscribers tomorrow. The subjects for this installment include popular small displacement machines, including the Vespa LX, which took top honors in the smallest 50cc class and tied with the Kymco People in the 150cc class, and the Kawasaki Ninja 250 , which won a victory over the Honda Rebel in the larger 250cc class. Testing procedures included a new 5.2 mile testing route that included multiple stops and starts along with a full battery of acceleration, handling and braking tests. Fuel economy scores were also calculated and factored into the overall results. Click past the break for the full press release.
