UPS deploys 300 CNG trucks in four states, now has 800 worldwide
UPS has announced the deployment of 300 new CNG-powered trucks in North America. The trucks have been deployed over the past month to Denver (43 units); Atlanta (46); Oklahoma City (100), and four cities in California: Sacramento (21), San Ramon (63), Los Angeles (9) and Ontario (18). This gives UPS a total of 800 vehicles across the company’s worldwide fleet that burn natural gas out of a total of 1,819 UPS vehicles that use alternative fuels. The alt-energy sources include CNG, liquefied natural gas, propane, electric and hybrid electric vehicles in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany (pictured), France, Brazil, Chile, Korea and the United Kingdom. These 300 vans were not converted vehicles but designed to be CNG-capable from the start. Canada wants North American fuel efficiency standard
Canada’s Environment Minister Jim Prentice believes that there should be a single fuel efficiency standard for all countries in North America. He says, “At this point in the United States, it would appear as though they are headed toward a 35 mile a gallon standard by 2020 and that would start to come into effect in the 2011 model year. We’ve essentially been prepared to go in that same direction.” That 35 mpg standard is good enough for Canada if it’s good enough for the United States, right? It makes sense for automakers that sell their products across all of North America, especially to the U.S. domestic manufacturers that build hundreds of thousands of cars in Canada and Mexico each year. It’s not perfect, though, as California is moving to create its own fuel economy standards under the guise of greenhouse gas emissions regulations. “The first thing that has to happen, however, is that the United States has to land with their own domestic policy. It’s by no means clear how this will emerge from Congress over the course of the next year,” Prentice said. Coming: Cheap Chinese Cars at Costco?
Chinese cars have been displayed at the Detroit Auto Show for the past several years. Many industry critics ridiculed them for design or quality flaws. But others see these first Chinese vehicles and remember how Japanese and Korean cars were once laughed off—only to become mainstream products in America. Kathleen Ligocki, CEO of GS Motors and formerly president of Ford of Mexico, expects Chinese-designed cars to begin production in Mexico in 2010—and make their way to the US about five years after first testing the waters in Latin America and Canada. GS Motors, a Mexican company, already imports three models from China’s First Auto Works (FAW) and sold 4,000 of them in Mexico last year. Here’s the zinger: Ligocki believes Chinese cars will be sold in the US through big-box stores like Costco or Wal-Mart, which is how GS Motors is retailing them in Mexico. GS is building an assembly plant in Michoacan, Mexico with FAW. The plan is for vehicles to roll off the line beginning in 2010. GS Motors will launch the FAW brand in Mexico this year with the F1 Hatchback, an entry-level car sold for under $5,500. FAW, one of the largest Chinese automakers, is allied in China with Volkswagen. FAW also produces the Miles ZX40, a small van-style neighborhood electric vehicle, developed by Miles Electric Vehicles , based on Santa Monica, Calif. GS Motors is racing to bring the first Chinese cars to America via Mexico—but they are not alone. BYD (Build Your Dreams) showed plug-in hybrid and electric model in Detroit last month and promised to bring them to the US as early as next year. In fact, many of China’s 80 or so auto companies have made similar gestures, with varying degrees of seriousness. read more

2008 Petroleum demand sinks to 2003 levels
Auto Blog: Etc. For the last several years, as the economies of countries like India, China and Brazil have boomed, projections of worldwide energy demand have indicated an increase of 70 percent over the next two decades. That demand curve hit a big speed bump in the United States in 2008 as prices for oil spiked, and were then followed by the global economy tanking in the second half of the year. Demand for petroleum products in particular had the biggest drop since 1980, falling six percent to just 19.4 million barrels a day. That’s the lowest demand in this country since 2003. Domestic oil production also hit its lowest level since 1946, as Gulf of Mexico supplies were disrupted by hurricanes and Alaskan production declined as well. Imports of both crude oil and finished products like gasoline also dropped by 2.2 and 10.6 percent respectively. This downward trend is likely to continue for at least the next year or two as global trade declines. Once the economy recovers, the upward trend will probably resume – at least for the next decade when alternatives (should) really start to take hold. Shelby Super Cars revises incredible claims (again!), now almost credible
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , USA Spare a thought for the makers of the world’s fastest production automobile. Ever since they announced further details about their plans to produce the “world’s fastest production electric car,” Shelby Super Cars has been the target of much snickering and rolling of the eyes over their claim of a 10-minute battery re-charge capability. It’s not because it’s outside the realm of possibility. Indeed, that same declaration has been made in the past by the makers of the Lightning Gt and the folks at Phoenix Motorcars . Heck, it was even demonstrated by Aerovironment and the battery maker, Altairnano . The problem was they said it could be done with a 110V outlet which, according to the known physical laws of the universe, is not possible. Soon that claim was downgraded to “220V service”. Better, but still a touch on the outside of believable. In search of a little respect, the company has now gone back and revised its press release further by simply eliminating any reference to the voltage of their source. Will it quiet the critics until the upcoming superspeedway demonstration? You tell us. Re-revised press release after the break. Fiat Planning 500-based Abarth sports car
Fiat has revived the historic Abarth badge for a sporting version of its 500 and Punto minicars and the Italian automaker says it wants to create an entire unique Abarth brand starting with a sports car. As we’ve previously reported, Fiat has been working on a low-slung sports car, but news comes today that the Abarth coupe will be based on the Fiat 500, itself closely rated to the rather humble Fiat Panda. But don’t let its platform fool you: AutoExpress reports that the Abarth coupe will feature a lightweight aluminum chassis and a 1.4-liter turbo four from the 500 Abarth (good for 135-horsepower). Though it will be front-wheel-drive, the Abarth Coupe will employ Fiat’s Torque Transfer Control, which acts like a limited slip differential up front. Later on, expect a 158-horse high performance variant that should still average 45 mpg on the European combined cycle. AutoExpress speculates that the little Abarth coupe, which will resemble both the Lotus Elise and the ill-fated Smart Roadster, will start at £12,000. Don’t expect North American sales unless Fiat decides to bring the 500 to the United States in Canada. But the Italian automaker recently put the 500 on sale in Mexico – its first North American market – so it’s possible that an Italian invasion could come sooner rather than later.

New Renault-Nissan V6 diesel to power wide range of cars, SUVs
The oil burner will even be coming to the U.S. in the Nissan Maxima, though not until 2010 Diesel engine sales have stagnated in the U.S. because of lingering perceptions of the clattering, foul-smelling contraptions of the 1970s and earlier. Many carmakers have been reluctant to even offer them in America because of the cost of emissions certification and small profit margins, but Renault-Nissan have just announced their first-ever V6 diesel engine and it will be coming to the U.S. in the Maxima sedan. Many other Renault-Nissan vehicles will also get the powerplant, which is rated at 235hp (175kW) from its 3.0L displacement. Estimates put the diesel engine’s fuel consumption at around 32mpg (7.2L/100km). Among the vehicles the new six-pot diesel will call home are the Renault Laguna, Nissan Pathfinder and Navara (Europe, other markets), Infiniti FX, EX and G37 as well as an upcoming large sedan jointly built by Renault and Samsung, reports Automotive News Europe. Whether the Infiniti diesels will also eventually become available in America as well as their debut market of Europe is unclear. Previous reports indicated that Infiniti did not have any plans to bring diesels to the U.S., but the Maxima could be used as a way to test the waters before bringing the option to its luxury Infiniti line. Competition from BMW and Mercedes diesels is also a possible justification for the move. At any rate, Europe will have the Infiniti diesels by 2010. A $245 million joint development project between the allied carmakers birthed the engine, and production is expected to ramp up from current levels involving small teams building 25 engines each week to full-scale assembly of 100 engines per week during the first six months of this year. About 10,000 of the V6 diesels could be produced annually at Renault’s Cleon factory. source:motor authority If you like this post we request you to kindly rate it.
