Click above for a gallery of the Th!nk City Th!nk's Norwegian exodus continues. Th!nk will announce details of its "aggressive expansion plans" next Thursday in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Th!nk CEO Richard Canny and Th!nk product development director Christopher Neal will be on hand to talk to representatives from Michigan and seven other states about "options to bring electric vehicle manufacturing jobs to the U.S." Um, yes please. Th!nk has said for a while that they plan to bring this all-electric, highway-speed (62 mph top speed) car to America; now we know that the Th!nk City is scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. in the middle of 2010 (no word on the Th!nk Ox ). The City is already available in Norway and we have video proof that this car is fun to drive. With a 112-mile range, this car could be the right alternative for a lot of people. U.S. price? We'll ask Th!nk next week.
Click above and scroll down to watch the video The Chevrolet Spark was one of the first cars our Geneva team saw when they arrived in town to cover the show. We got some nice shots of the interior of the vehicle (see 1 , 2 , 3 ), but we've now got some more info on the thoughts that went into stretching the two-door Beat concept into the Spark thanks to a video interview with David Lyon, Chevrolet's executive director of interior design. Lyon says that the Spark's five-door style looks like the three-door concept, but is much more functional, and that the Spark heralds what he hopes will be Chevy's new domination of the mini-segment. You can watch the interview after the jump.
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Hybrid This week, Ricardo officially opened its new Battery Systems Development Center in Van Buren, MI. The battery lab is claimed to be the biggest of its kind and, as a consultant, Ricardo is opening the facility to anyone developing energy storage systems for hybrid and electric vehicles. Ricardo is touting its Virtual Vehicle Development Environment. This is a simulation environment that models the entire vehicle, allowing the battery to be integrated and tested under a wide range of conditions that might be experienced in the real world. Ricardo has been actively working on alternative energy systems for a number of years in order to help both manufacturers and suppliers develop fuel-saving designs. This marks the second major announcement of a battery testing facility in southeast Michigin in recent weeks. GM's new battery lab at the Warren, MI tech center will also provide testing capability to battery makers. In GM's case it will share the testing data with the battery companies while building its own knowledge base on batteries. By offering testing services to other companies, Ricardo will be able to do the same.
Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Hybrid , GM , Detroit Auto Show After showing off its latest cars and concepts yesterday at the Detroit Auto Show , General Motors reserved its second press conference today for battery news. As has been rumored for months, South Korea's LG Chem has been selected to supply the lithium-ion cells that will power the Chevy Volt. However, LG Chem and its U.S. subsidiary will not be supplying full packs to GM. Instead, GM has decided to keep the pack production in-house along with the battery management systems and all the power electronics. The automaker will be building a pack assembly facility here in Michigan, with LG Chem only supplying the cells. GM is currently working on finalizing the site selection and working with local and state officials on the approvals. The site of the factory is expected to be announced soon with site preparation starting early this year. Tooling of the factory should be completed by early 2010 with production starting soon afterward. GM also announced a new partnership with the University of Michigan to create the Advanced Battery Coalition for Drivetrains (ABCD). ABCD will focus on researching batteries and integration issues with a specific focus on vehicle applications. Press release after the jump.
Filed under: Etc. , Hydrogen , Green Daily After Mamma Mia! and being James Bond, what else is there to do but let BMW loan you the dual-fuel Hydrogen 7 to go to the 66th Golden Globe Awards tonight. That must've been what Pierce Brosnan was thinking, as he (pictured above with his wife, Keely Shaye Smith) will be one of many celebs headed to the red carpet in a luxury ride; this one just happens to be capable of "zero-emission" miles. Hilary Swank , Kristen Davis , Brad Pitt and others have previously taken the H7 for a spin. We're busy with the news coming from Detroit , but we still have a question about what's happening in LA: what kind of alt-fuel car will we see the most of tonight? Teslas? Other EVs? Hydrogen-powered? Diesels ? Anyone want to make any sort of predictions on this topic?
