VW Caddy EcoFuel on sale in the UK this summer

Boone Pickens ) but in Europe, especially, natural gas is a somewhat common alternative fuel. Volkswagen has announced that a compressed natural gas (CNG) version of the Caddy commercial vehicle will be coming to the UK this summer. Called the Caddy EcoFuel , the CNG-powered panel van has been sold in other European companies since 2006 and 7,500 units were snapped up last year. VW will also offer the Caddy Maxi EcoFuel, with an extra 1.0 m³ carrying capacity, in the UK alongside the Caddy EcoFuel. More details after the jump. The Caddy EcoFuel can burn CNG or biomethane. For the range-worried, rest assured that there is a 13-litre reserve gasoline tank that can be used if the CNG runs out. The Caddy EcoFuel was on display in Britain last summer and, in 2007, Rainer Zietlow took ones of these vehicles around the world on CNG in just 142 days . Argentina motorbike manufacturer launches CNG bike

Argentina’s most important motorbike manufacturer, Zanella, has announced its first factory-installed CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) powered bike. The bike, which is a converted RX150 model, has 150 cc displacement and the conversion adds two tanks of gas for a range of approximately 200 kilometers (120 miles). The tanks can store 1.4 m 3 of natural gas and are located in the same place as the fuel tank. Interestingly, a small reservoir that holds 3.5 liters of gasoline remains on board for emergencies. The CNG option costs 1,000 pesos (about $285) and the conversion kit is supplied by local manufacturer Ecopos, based in Santa Fe, Argentina. Mercedes-Benz to enter U.S. CNG market with a natural gas B-Class?

After all, it burns cleaner than other fossil fuels, it can be collected from landfills and waste facilities and it’s abundant in North America. Regardless, CNG doesn’t seem to get much support from the government as an alternative to gasoline or diesel; certainly much less so than hybrids or fully electric vehicles. This lack of government help for the fuel makes it much less attractive to consumers than other alternatives. Mercedes-Benz is still interested in testing the American CNG waters, though, and the German automaker is proving it’s serious by bringing a natural gas-powered version of its B-Class compact MPV – the BiFuel B170 NGT -to the Auto Show that’s currently taking place in Washington D.C. A CNG-powered B-Class is already available in Europe (and South America), where natural gas, sometimes referred to as autogas, is a more popular choice than it is in the United States. Auto Blog: Volkswagen , Natural Gas , Germany Despite some recent problems with the natural gas supply from Russia , Germans have an ever-increasing number of CNG options. Rainer Zietlow, a German citizen who just might be the world’s biggest CNG fan, started a nationwide tour of Germany’s 800 compressed natural gas (CNG) service stations on the 7th of January. He’ll be at the wheel of a VW Passat TSI EcoFuel with a direct injection bi-fuel turbo engine and expects to complete the tour in 80 days, just before the AMI 2009 (Auto Mobile International) show in Leipzig on March 28. Zietlow is already a CNG expert, having completed two CNG rallies, one from Germany to Bangkok, Thailand and a tour around the world on a VW Caddy .
