Ford CEO Mullaly expects many Fords to be electric in a decade
Click above for high-res gallery of the Ford Focus EV “mule” Ford may have been relatively quiet on the electric vehicle front while General Motors got all the attention for its Chevy Volt series hybrid, but the Blue Oval has come roaring back in recent months. It was revealed in its viability plan submitted to Congress back in December that an electric commercial van would be launched just one year from now followed by an electric car the next year. According to CEO Alan Mulally, that’s just the start. At a conference in California this week, Mulally declared, “In 10 years, 12 years, you are going to see a major portion of our portfolio move to electric vehicles.” Mulally told the conference that internal combustion efficiency will also improve dramatically over the next decade, and more hybrids will join the lineup including a plug-in hybrid that will debut in 2012. Ford is shifting a significant proportion of its truck building capacity to cars over the next two years and the company doesn’t expect truck sales to recover to their previous record heights. While fuel prices are low now, they are expected to climb again as the economy recovers. The shifts to cars and more hybrid and electric vehicles will be necessary to meet both market demands created by those expected higher fuel prices and government mandates for higher fuel efficiency. Geneva 2009: Volkswagen reveals Polo BlueMotion concept, 87 g/km CO2!
Click above for a high-res gallery of the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion Concept Volkswagen revealed the all-new Polo concept, expected to come to the US market in the next couple of years. This new B-segment car comes in three- and five-door hatchback flavors with a range of gas and diesel engines, but the leader of the pack is the BlueMotion model with 96 g/km of CO2 emissions. More importantly, VW showed a concept for the next-gen. BlueMotion model that will launch in 2010. The BlueMotion concept uses an updated 1.2L three cylinder TDI diesel, with 74 hp. Combined with 15-inch low rolling resistance tires, a blanked off grille, extended rocker panels for lower drag, automatic start stop, and brake energy regeneration. The bottom line is 71.3 mpg (US) and 87 g/km of CO 2 emissions. That makes the new BlueMotion the most efficient five passenger internal combustion car on the road. Renault plans revamp of powertrain lineup to cut CO2
Over the next few years, Renault is planning a complete revamp of its powertrain lineup in an effort to cut CO 2 emissions. The updates will affect both gas and diesel engines, transmissions as well as advancing electric drive systems. Renault wants to be number one when it comes to low and zero emissions vehicles and the downsizing of internal combustion engines will be a big part of that. By adding turbocharging, Renault will replace current 1.2-1.6L gas engines with new 0.9-1.2L three and four cylinder engines ranging from 90-115 hp. This new modular TCe engine family will join the 1.2L TCe that was introduced in the Clio last year and cut CO 2 emissions by 30-40 g/km. New 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0L diesel engines will also improve efficiency, meet new EURO VI emissions standards and cut CO 2 by 20-25 g/km compared to existing units. Starting sometime in the next year, Renault will also replace existing automatic transmissions with new dual-clutch units that are lighter and more efficient. Also high on the list are electric drive systems which Renault calls “an inevitable answer.” Renault is working with alliance partner Nissan and its battery joint venture Automotive Electric Supply Corp (AESC) to try and make affordable, durable electric cars a reality. While an important part of the answer, Renault doesn’t expect EVs to replace all internal combustion vehicles in the foreseeable future. Check out the full release from Renault at the link. Detroit 2009: A3 TDI coming to US Audi dealers late this year
Filed under: Diesel , Audi , Detroit Auto Show Click the A3 TDI for a high res gallery With the Q7 TDI showing up at US Audi dealerships in the next few weeks, Audi has revealed the next step in its North American diesel onslaught. The A3 TDI has been rumored to come to America since last fall’s Audi Mileage Marathon, and now we know this is indeed happening. The A3 is based on the same platform as the VW Golf and Jetta and will be using the same 2.0L four cylinder diesel as the recently-introduced Jetta. That means it gets 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque and real world mileage should be in the neighborhood of 40 mpg. During the marathon, the A3s were regularly topping 50 mpg. Want to test one out yourself? You can, once the A3 TDI arrives stateside late this year. Gallery: Detroit 2009: Audi A3 TDI [Source: Audi] Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.
