Geneva 2009: NV200 may come to America with electric drive

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Nissan NV200 Nissan is getting into the light commercial vehicle market in the U.S. next year with its new NV2500 and, possibly, with the NV200 that debuted in Geneva this week. The NV200 is a compact van based on Nissan’s European B-segment platform used for the Micra. It can be configured as a seven-passenger van or a cargo van with up to 145 cubic feet of cargo room. In Europe, it’s powered by gas or diesel engines of 1.5L or 1.6L capacities. However, if we get the NV200 here there is a distinct possibility that it could come with electric drive. While we were running around in Switzerland, our good friend Mike Levine from PickupTrucks.com was at the NTEA work truck show in Chicago. There he caught up with Joe Castelli, Nissan’s vice president of light commercial vehicles and fleet, and they discussed alternative drive possibilities. Castelli told Mike that, “dA hybrid or electric vehicle has to be considered for commercial vehicles.” Just as Ford has concluded with its upcoming Transit Connect EV , Castelli admits, “Electric vehicles aren’t going to work if you’re driving 300 miles a day on the road. But if I’m at a construction site all day or I’m a florist making lots of stops a quarter-mile apart than I can get away with an electric vehicle.” Given Nissan’s major emphasis on electric vehicles in the coming years, it makes perfect sense to electrify a vehicle like the NV200. Packaging a battery under the flat load floor would be relatively straightforward and the short range duty cycle for commercial applications would play to the electric’s strengths. Castelli even acknowledged that electric or hybrid drive is not out of the question for the larger NV2500. [Source: PickupTrucks.com ] Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc. Geneva preview: Nissan Qazana teaser shines a light

Click on the teaser above for the hi-res gallery For those folks tired of looking ridiculous riding about in their ocean liner-sized Armada (sorry to be the one to break it to you) and who would like to stay true to the Nissan brand, the human-sized Qazana, a stylish down-sized crossover, may be just the thing you’ll want to upgrade to. You’ll get a chance to see the whole thing at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show but for now we have only this teaser shot and our imaginations. So, look straight at the huge glaring fog light and picture a vehicle with a Note-sized footprint, a low profile and “flaring” wheel arches. The concept will have the auto-show-de-rigeur suicide doors and appear “assertive and sporty”. When it makes it to production it will replace the Note/Micra on the assembly lines at the Sunderland plant . As that may only occur sometime in 2010, please don’t feel like you have to wait that long before ditching recycling the Queen E. Press release after the break. A little sunlight on the Nissan DOE loan: it’s for EVs

Automotive News has answered the question why Nissan applied for that DOE loan program: electric cars and advanced batteries, despite the lack of plans for development in the mid-term . Nissan hasn’t confirmed the amount of money it wants to borrow even though the application was sent in in December. It wasn’t unveiled until this week. Nissan said that this money would be used to upgrade its Smyrna, Tenn., assembly plant and build a new facility for battery production. Since the Tennessee plant was built in 1983, it is eligible for the DOE’s loans – which are meant to upgrade facilities more than 20 years old. Nissan applies for DOE loan program, purpose unknown

Auto Blog: Nissan , Legislation and Policy To date there have been 75 applications for low cost loans from the US Department of Energy through the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Incentive Program. Only one of those has been from a Japan-based automaker, Nissan. The ATVMIP is the $25 billion fund created as part of the 2007 energy bill to help automakers and suppliers pay for the costs of developing and tooling to build more efficient vehicles that meet the new CAFE requirements. The 75 applications so far equal total requests of $38 billion, so some companies are expected to come away empty handed. A Bloomberg report quotes Energy Department spokesman Phil West as saying only 26 of the applications are “substantially complete.” The largest chunks are expected to go to the Detroit automakers along with some battery suppliers. Tesla Motors applied for $450 million in funds to pay for the development and production of its Model S sedan. As for Nissan, spokesman Brian Brockman told ABG “Yes, we’ve applied. We aren’t discussing how much or what we would use it for.” Given Nissan’s commitment to bringing electric vehicles to market beginning in 2010 and its involvement with Better Place , it could be looking at building EVs here in the United States.
